Chapter 10 - mansion

Chapter Nine: The Mansion

Morning light filtered through the hospital curtains, soft and golden. Jay stirred against Keifer's chest, momentarily confused by the unfamiliar surroundings. Then memory flooded back—the accident, the hospital, the way he'd held her all night.

She looked up.

He was already awake, watching her with those intense eyes.

"Morning," he murmured.

"Morning." Her voice was raspy. "You stayed."

"I told you I would."

She smiled, then winced as she shifted. Her head throbbed. Her wrist ached. Every muscle protested.

"Careful," he said, adjusting the pillows behind her. "Doctor said rest."

"Doctor said I'm fine."

"Fine and rested are different things."

She stuck her tongue out at him. He laughed—that rare, wonderful sound.

A nurse entered with breakfast and discharge papers. Keifer handled everything, signing where needed, asking questions she wouldn't have thought of. By nine, she was dressed in fresh clothes Tita Gemma had brought, sitting in a wheelchair despite her protests, being wheeled toward the exit.

"I can walk," she argued.

"Humor me."

"You're enjoying this."

"Immensely."

---

The hospital lobby was chaos.

Percy was arguing with a vending machine. Aries was on his phone, probably rearranging his entire schedule. Yuri was filming everything with a dramatic narration.

"And here we see the rare Percy Mariano in his natural habitat, attempting to extract snacks from a machine that clearly hates him. Truly, a majestic creature."

"YURI, SHUT UP AND HELP ME."

"I'm documenting. This is important."

Jay shook her head, then winced. "Why are they all here?"

"Because they're insane," Keifer said. "And because they love you."

Percy finally gave up on the vending machine and bounded over. "BABY SISTA! You're awake! You're alive! You're—" He examined her bandages. "You look terrible."

"Thanks, Percy. Love you too."

Aries pulled her into a gentle hug. "How are you feeling?"

"Like I got hit by a car. Oh wait, I did."

"That's not funny."

"A little funny."

Aries sighed, but he was smiling.

Yuri appeared, phone lowered for once. "For real though. You okay?"

"I'll live. Apparently."

"Good. The betting pool would be ruined if you died."

"YURI!"

"What? I'm honest."

---

Keifer cleared his throat. "She's being discharged. I'm taking her to my place."

Silence.

Percy's mouth fell open. "Your place? Like... your actual place? The mansion?"

"Yes."

"The one we've been to a thousand times?"

"That's the one."

Aries raised an eyebrow. "You're taking her to the mansion?"

"She needs rest. Comfort. Medical care if needed. I have all of that at home." He looked at Jay. "You'll be safe there."

Jay blinked. "Your home?"

"You'll like it. It's warm. Comfortable. My brothers are there."

Brothers. The little one. The teenager. Her heart flipped.

Percy grabbed Aries's arm. "We're going too, right? We're definitely going too."

Aries sighed. "Percy—"

"I need to see Keifer's house with our sister there. This is historic. This is unprecedented. Yuri, back me up."

Yuri nodded solemnly. "This is historic. I'm coming too."

Keifer looked at Jay. "Your choice. They can come or go. Whatever you're comfortable with."

She thought about it. Her family—loud, chaotic, overwhelming. But also warm. Safe. Familiar.

"Let them come," she said. "But only if they behave."

Percy gasped dramatically. "I'm wounded. I always behave."

"You once set a conference room on fire."

"Allegedly."

Aries rubbed his temples. "This is going to be a long day."

---

Two cars. One convoy. Destination: the Watson mansion.

Jay sat in Keifer's car, still processing. "Your home. You're taking me to your home."

"Yes."

"With my brothers and Yuri."

"Yes."

"Who are all insane."

"Yes."

She laughed, then winced, touching her head. "Ow. Laughing hurts."

"Then don't make me laugh."

"You make it impossible not to."

He glanced at her, that soft look in his eyes. "Good."

---

The drive took forty minutes, winding through exclusive neighborhoods, past gates that opened automatically, up a long driveway lined with palm trees.

And then the mansion appeared.

Jay's breath caught.

It was massive—modern architecture, floor-to-ceiling windows, multiple wings spreading across perfectly manicured grounds. A fountain danced in the circular driveway. Staff in uniforms waited by the entrance.

Behind them, Percy's car pulled up. He was already hanging out the window.

"HOME SWEET HOME!" he yelled.

Jay turned to Keifer. "He's been here before?"

"Many times. They all have. Aries and Percy basically live here when they're avoiding work. Yuri has his own room."

"His own ROOM?"

"They're my best friends, Jay. They've been in my life for years. The mansion is as much theirs as mine when they're here."

She stared at him. "You gave them rooms?"

"I gave them space. They filled it with chaos." He smiled slightly. "It's better with them around."

Something warm bloomed in her chest. This man—this powerful, wealthy, intimidating man—had built a home. Not just a house. A home. Full of people he loved.

---

Percy bounded out of his car, racing toward the entrance like he owned the place. Which, apparently, he basically did.

"LAST ONE TO THE KITCHEN MAKES BREAKFAST TOMORROW!"

Aries walked more slowly, shaking his head. "He does this every time."

Yuri strolled behind, phone already out. "Watson mansion tour, part seventeen. Watch the Percy sprint. Beautiful form. Absolutely terrible endurance."

Keifer helped Jay out of the car, keeping a hand on her elbow. "Welcome to my home."

"It's beautiful, Keif."

"Wait until you see inside."

---

The interior was even more overwhelming.

Marble floors stretched endlessly. A chandelier hung three stories above. Art that belonged in museums decorated every wall. A staircase curved dramatically to upper floors.

Percy was already inside, raiding the kitchen. "KEIF, YOUR CHEF MADE THOSE COOKIES I LIKE!"

"Then don't eat them all!"

"NO PROMISES!"

Aries collapsed onto an enormous couch, pulling out his phone. "Same as always. Comfortable. Overpriced. I love it."

Yuri was filming the chandelier. "This thing costs more than most people's houses. Just saying."

Jay stood in the entrance, taking it all in. "They really do act like they own the place."

"They might as well." Keifer smiled. "They're family."

Before she could respond, a small sound echoed through the hall.

Footsteps. Tiny, rapid, pattering against marble.

And then—

"PAPPA!"

A small blur shot across the floor, launching itself at Keifer's legs.

Jay's heart stopped.

A toddler—maybe three years old—clung to Keifer's knee, looking up with enormous brown eyes. Dark hair. Chubby cheeks. The most adorable child she'd ever seen.

Keifer bent down instantly, scooping the little boy into his arms. "Keiran. What are you doing awake? It's nap time."

"Missed Pappa," the child said, wrapping tiny arms around Keifer's neck. "Wanted Pappa."

Pappa.

The child called him Pappa.

Jay looked at Aries, eyes wide, questions screaming silently.

Aries caught her expression and stood, walking over. "That's Keiran. His brother. Three years old."

Brother. Not son. Brother.

"Their mom died when Keiran was born," Aries continued quietly. "Dad was never in the picture. Keifer's been raising him since day one. Keiran doesn't know any different. Thinks Keifer is his father."

Relief flooded through her, followed immediately by a wave of something else—tenderness, warmth, an overwhelming urge to cry.

He'd raised a baby. Alone. At nineteen.

Percy appeared beside them, cookie in hand, suddenly serious. "He's amazing with him, Jay. You have no idea. Keifer gave up everything to raise that kid. Late nights. Early mornings. Missed opportunities. Never complains. Never regrets."

Yuri nodded, phone lowered. "Little dude is his whole world."

Jay looked at Keifer, at the way he held his brother, at the love in his eyes.

Her heart cracked open.

---

"Keiran," Keifer was saying, "we have guests. Remember what we talked about?"

The little boy turned, still in Keifer's arms, and stared at the crowd.

His eyes landed on Jay.

And widened.

He wiggled, demanding to be put down. Keifer obliged, watching curiously as his little brother toddled forward.

Straight toward Jay.

She knelt carefully, ignoring the pain in her wrist and head, meeting him at his level. "Hi there."

Keiran stared at her like she was the most fascinating thing he'd ever seen. His small head tilted. His eyes—so like Keifer's—studied her face.

Then he reached out, tiny hand touching the bandage on her forehead.

"Owie?" he asked softly.

Jay's heart melted into a puddle. "Yes, baby. Owie."

"Kiss better?" He leaned forward, pressing a clumsy kiss to her forehead near the bandage. "All better now."

Behind her, she heard Percy make a strangled sound. Aries was definitely emotional. Yuri was filming, but his eyes were suspiciously bright.

Jay's eyes filled with tears. "Thank you, sweetheart. That helped so much."

Keiran beamed. Then his expression turned serious, thoughtful. He looked at Keifer, then back at Jay. Something seemed to click in his little mind.

He stepped closer. Pulled at the edge of her dress with tiny fingers.

"Can I call you Mamma?"

The world stopped.

Jay's breath caught. Tears spilled over. "Oh, baby—"

"I don't have Mamma," Keiran continued, voice innocent, matter-of-fact. "Pappa says Mamma in heaven. But maybe..." He looked at her hopefully. "Maybe you can be Mamma here?"

Percy dropped his cookie.

Aries went completely still.

Yuri lowered his phone, mouth open.

Keifer moved forward, concern in his eyes. "Keiran, buddy, that's—"

But Jay was already moving.

She sat down completely on the marble floor, ignoring everything—the cold, her injuries, the stares of her brothers and Yuri. She opened her arms.

Keiran stepped into them without hesitation.

She lifted him carefully, settling him on her lap, wrapping her good arm around his tiny body. He fit perfectly, like he belonged there.

"Keiran," she said softly, voice thick with tears. "I would love for you to call me Mamma. If that's okay with your Pappa."

Keiran looked at Keifer, eyes questioning.

Keifer stared at them—at the woman he was falling for, holding his little brother like he was the most precious thing in the world. His throat was tight. His heart was full.

"Yeah, buddy," he managed. "That's okay."

Keiran's face lit up like Christmas morning. He turned back to Jay, beaming. "MAMMA!"

And then he kissed her cheek.

Right on the cheek. A loud, smacking, toddler kiss.

Jay laughed through her tears and kissed him back—first one cheek, then the other, then his forehead, then his nose. Each kiss made him giggle more.

"You are the sweetest boy in the whole world," she told him. "Do you know that?"

"I know," Keiran said solemnly. "Pappa tells me every day."

Percy made a sound like a dying whale. "I'm not crying. You're crying."

Aries wiped his eyes discreetly. Yuri was definitely crying but still filming.

"You're getting this, right?" Percy whispered.

"I'm getting it. This is the best footage of my life."

---

A new voice interrupted.

"What's happening?"

Everyone turned.

A teenager stood at the bottom of the stairs—fifteen maybe, tall and lanky, with Keifer's eyes and an expression of absolute confusion. He wore casual clothes, hair slightly messy, clearly just woken from a nap.

Keifer smiled. "Keigan. Come here."

The boy—Keigan—walked over, eyeing the crowd. He spotted Percy, Aries, and Yuri first.

"Oh, you guys are here." He relaxed slightly. "Hi, Tito Percy. Tito Aries. Tito Yuri."

Percy grinned. "Hey, kid. Come meet someone."

Keigan looked past them. Saw Jay on the floor. Keiran in her lap. Both of them crying and smiling.

"Uh... who's that?"

Keifer walked to Jay, offering his hand to help her up. She took it, still holding Keiran. "Keigan, this is Jay. She's... important."

Keigan studied her. "Important how?"

"She works for me. And..." Keifer hesitated. "She's the reason I'm alive right now."

Keigan's eyes widened. "What?"

"Car accident. She pushed me out of the way. Saved my life."

The teenager's expression shifted—surprise, gratitude, curiosity. He looked at Jay with new eyes.

"Thank you," he said quietly. "For saving my kuya."

Jay smiled warmly. "You don't have to thank me. I'd do it again in a heartbeat."

Keigan nodded slowly. Then: "Why are you on the floor? With Keiran?"

Jay laughed. "Long story. Your little brother asked if he could call me Mamma."

Keigan's eyebrows shot up. He looked at Keiran, who was beaming in Jay's arms.

"Really?"

"Mamma!" Keiran confirmed happily. "My Mamma!"

Keigan stared for a moment. Then, unexpectedly, he smiled. "Cool."

Percy burst out laughing. "Cool? That's all you got? COOL?"

"What else am I supposed to say?"

"Something dramatic! This is huge!"

Keigan shrugged. "Kuya looks happy. Keiran looks happy. She saved Kuya's life. Seems fine to me." He looked at Jay. "You're pretty. And you make my brothers happy. So... welcome to the family, I guess?"

Jay's heart swelled. "Thank you, Keigan. That means a lot."

He nodded, then turned to Percy. "Tito Percy, did you eat all the cookies again?"

"Maybe."

"I'm telling the chef."

"KEIGAN, NO—"

---

Lunch was an event.

The mansion's kitchen staff prepared an enormous spread. Percy attacked it like a starving man. Aries ate gracefully while answering emails. Yuri documented everything.

Keiran insisted on sitting next to Jay, which meant she had to help him eat, which meant her own food got cold. She didn't care.

Keigan sat across from them, watching his little brother with wonder. "He's never like this with strangers."

"Maybe she's not a stranger," Aries observed.

"She called him baby. Kissed his cheek. He let her." Keigan shook his head. "He doesn't let anyone do that. Just me and Kuya."

Percy nodded, mouth full. "She's got the magic touch."

Yuri lowered his phone. "Or maybe... hear me out... Keiran knows something we don't."

"Like what?"

"Like Jay belongs here."

The table went quiet.

Jay felt heat rise to her cheeks. Keifer caught her eye, something warm and wondering in his gaze.

Keiran, oblivious, tugged her sleeve. "Mamma, more juice?"

She smiled, pouring him more. "Of course, baby."

---

After lunch, Jay needed rest. Her head was throbbing, her wrist aching. The doctor had warned her not to overdo it.

Keifer insisted she use his room.

"Your room?" she asked.

"It's the most comfortable. Private bath. Blackout curtains. You'll sleep better."

"I can't take your room—"

"You can. You will. No arguments."

Percy wolf-whistled. "KEIF'S ROOM. Baby sista going to Keif's room."

"Percy." Aries's voice was warning.

"What? I'm just saying—"

"Don't say anything."

Yuri was already filming. "This moment will be preserved for history."

Keifer ignored them all, leading Jay upstairs. Behind them, Percy's voice echoed:

"TITA GEMMA IS GOING TO LOSE IT WHEN SHE HEARS ABOUT THIS!"

---

Keifer's bedroom was surprisingly understated—comfortable furniture, warm colors, personal touches. Photos on the dresser. Books on the nightstand. A hoodie draped over a chair.

Him. Everywhere.

"Rest," he said softly. "I'll check on you in a few hours."

"Keif."

He turned.

"Thank you. For everything."

He walked back, cupped her face gently—avoiding the bandage—and kissed her forehead. "Thank you for saving my life. Thank you for loving my brother. Thank you for being you."

She smiled, exhausted but happy.

He left her to sleep.

---

Three hours later, she woke to find company.

Keiran sat on the floor beside the bed, quietly playing with a stuffed dinosaur, clearly instructed to be silent. When he saw her eyes open, his face lit up.

"Mamma awake!"

"Hi, baby." Her voice was sleep-rough. "What are you doing here?"

"Keeping Mamma safe. Pappa said guard duty." He held up his dinosaur. "Rex helps."

Jay laughed softly. "Rex is a very good guard."

"He is. He bites bad guys."

"Good to know."

The door opened. Keifer appeared, smiling at the scene. "He escaped. Found him halfway down the hall with Rex."

"He's protecting me."

"Apparently." He sat on the edge of the bed. "How's your head?"

"Better. Rest helped."

"Your wrist?"

"Sore but okay."

Keiran climbed onto the bed, carefully settling beside Jay. "Mamma, will you stay for dinner?"

She looked at Keifer. He looked back, hopeful but trying not to show it.

"I'd love to stay for dinner, baby."

"And breakfast?"

"Keiran," Keifer warned.

"What? Mamma should stay for breakfast too. And lunch. And more breakfast." He nodded firmly. "Mamma should stay forever."

Jay's eyes met Keifer's. Something passed between them—warm, terrifying, wonderful.

"Forever is a long time," she said softly.

"Good," Keiran declared. "Mamma should stay long time."

---

Downstairs, Percy had made himself at home.

He was in the game room, playing pool against himself. Aries was on the couch, reading something on his tablet. Yuri was in his favorite chair—the one he'd claimed years ago—scrolling through footage.

When Keifer appeared with Jay and Keiran, all three looked up.

"Look who's alive," Percy announced. "Baby sista, you good?"

"Better, thanks."

"Keiran take care of you?"

"The best care."

Keiran nodded proudly. "I used Rex."

Percy saluted the dinosaur. "Good work, soldier."

Keigan wandered in, popcorn in hand. "Movie night?"

Everyone looked at Keifer.

He looked at Jay.

"Movie night," he agreed.

---

They gathered in the home theater—because of course Keifer had a home theater. Massive screen. Stadium seating. Surround sound.

Percy claimed the best seat immediately. Aries sat beside him. Yuri set up his phone on a tripod—"for the memories." Keigan sprawled across several seats, already bored.

Keifer sat in the middle. Jay beside him. Keiran on her lap.

"What are we watching?" Jay asked.

"Something kid-friendly," Keifer said. "Keiran picks."

"ENCANTO!" Keiran shouted.

Percy groaned. "Again? We watched it last time!"

"Again!"

"We've watched it seventeen times!"

"Eighteen now!"

Jay laughed, holding Keiran close. "I love Encanto."

Keiran beamed. "Mamma loves Encanto! Mamma is perfect!"

Percy pointed at her. "You're never leaving. You know that, right? Keiran has chosen you. You're stuck forever."

Jay looked at Keifer. He was watching her with an expression she couldn't quite read—soft, wondering, hopeful.

"Maybe that's okay," she said quietly.

Keifer's hand found hers in the darkness.

---

The movie played. Keiran sang along to every song, his small voice off-key and perfect. He knew all the words, all the dances. Jay joined in, and his delight was incandescent.

Halfway through, he fell asleep against her chest.

Keifer reached over, gently moving a curl from his brother's face. "He's never done that before."

"What?"

"Fallen asleep on someone new. Takes him months to trust people."

Jay looked down at the sleeping boy. "He's special."

"He is." Keifer's voice was rough. "You're special too. He sees it. I see it."

"Keif—"

"I know it's fast. I know we haven't defined anything. But watching you with him—" He shook his head. "I've never seen anything more beautiful."

Her eyes filled with tears. "You're going to make me cry."

"Good. You deserve to cry happy tears for once."

She leaned into him, Keiran warm between them. The movie played on, but neither watched.

---

After the movie, Percy insisted on a tour of the "greatest hits."

"Okay, baby sista, you need to see the important stuff. Keif's wine cellar—massive. The pool—Olympic sized. The roof deck—views for days. And—" He lowered his voice dramatically. "The secret room."

"There's no secret room," Keifer said.

"THERE'S ALWAYS A SECRET ROOM."

"There really isn't."

Percy ignored him, dragging Jay through the mansion. Aries followed, amused. Yuri filmed. Keigan wandered off to his room.

They saw the wine cellar. The pool. The roof deck (the views were incredible). The gym. The library. The game room. The kitchen (where Percy stole more cookies).

No secret room.

"Disappointed," Percy announced.

"Told you."

"I choose not to believe you."

---

Finally, exhaustion caught up with Jay. Her head was pounding. Her wrist throbbed. Keifer noticed immediately.

"Enough. You need rest."

"But Percy—"

"Percy will survive." He looked at his friend. "Won't you?"

Percy nodded solemnly. "I will make sacrifices for baby sista's health."

"That's dramatic."

"I'm dramatic. It's my brand."

Keifer led Jay back upstairs, this time to a guest room—equally luxurious, equally comfortable. He'd had it prepared while she slept.

"Rest," he said. "Tomorrow, if you're feeling better, we can—"

"Keif."

He stopped.

"I had a really good day. Despite everything."

"Me too."

"Your brothers are amazing."

"I know."

"You're amazing."

He stepped closer, cupping her face gently. "Jay."

"Yes?"

"I don't know what we're doing. I don't know where this is going. But I know I don't want to do it without you."

She rose on her toes, kissed him softly. "Then don't."

He kissed her back—slow, sweet, full of promise.

When they broke apart, both were smiling.

"Goodnight, Jay."

"Goodnight, Keif."

---

She slept deeply, dreamlessly.

Downstairs, Percy found Keifer in the living room, staring at nothing.

"You've got it bad."

"I know."

"She's special."

"I know."

"Keiran loves her."

"I know."

"Keigan called her pretty. That's huge. He never notices people."

Keifer smiled. "I know."

Percy sat beside him. "So what happens now?"

"I don't know." Keifer looked toward the stairs, toward where she slept. "But I'm going to find out."

Percy nodded slowly. Then: "Can I be best man at the wedding?"

"Percy."

"I'm just asking!"

"Go to bed."

"FINE but think about it!"

---

Morning came softly.

Jay woke to sunlight and silence. Her head felt better. Her wrist still ached, but less. She stretched carefully, then froze.

Keiran was curled beside her, Rex clutched in his arms, fast asleep.

How had he—

The door opened. Keifer appeared, smiling.

"He escaped again," he whispered. "Found him halfway down the hall with Rex. Said Mamma needed protection."

Her heart melted. Again.

She looked at the sleeping boy, at his peaceful face, at the way he trusted her so completely.

"Keif."

"Yeah?"

"I think I'm falling in love with you."

He crossed the room, sat on the bed beside her. "I think I fell in love with you the moment you fainted on that sidewalk."

"That's ridiculous."

"Completely." He kissed her forehead. "But true."

Keiran stirred, blinking sleepily. He saw them together and smiled.

"Mamma. Pappa." He snuggled closer. "Love you."

Jay looked at Keifer over his head.

"Forever?" she whispered.

He kissed her again. "Forever."
