Chapter 53 - two weeks

Chapter Fifty-One: Karnataka - Two Weeks of Chaos and New Faces

The morning after arriving in Karnataka, the group gathered for breakfast at their hotel—a beautiful heritage property surrounded by lush gardens.

Shreya stood at the head of the table, practically vibrating with excitement.

"OKAY EVERYONE! I have BIG news!"

Percy perked up. "I LOVE BIG NEWS!"

"I've been planning ALL NIGHT! And I've decided—" She paused dramatically. "You're staying in Karnataka for TWO WEEKS!"

The table erupted.

"TWO WEEKS?" C.N. raised an eyebrow. "That's ambitious."

"Karnataka deserves two weeks! There's SO much to see! Bangalore, Mysore, Hampi, Coorg, the beaches—" She counted on her fingers. "And that's just the START!"

David was already bouncing. "I LOVE THIS PLAN!"

Mica high-fived him. "ME TOO!"

Aries looked at Ella. She shrugged. "Why not? We're having fun."

Keifer caught Jay's eye. She was smiling.

"Two weeks?" he murmured.

"Two weeks." She leaned into him. "More time with all of them. More time with you."

"Never enough time with you."

"That's cheesy."

"Your cheesy."

---

Shreya continued, now bouncing herself. "BUT WAIT! There's MORE!"

"There's more?" Honey laughed.

"I want you to meet my TWO BEST FRIENDS! Well, besides Akshi. She's my NUMBER ONE best friend. But these two are my NUMBER TWO and NUMBER THREE best friends!"

Akshi nodded solemnly. "The hierarchy is important."

Shreya held up two fingers. "First: Chethan! He's like my LITTLE BROTHER from another mother! He's twenty, he's CHAOS personified, and he and I have been best friends since he was like—" She calculated. "—twelve? He just showed up one day and never left!"

Percy's eyes lit up. "CHAOS PERSONIFIED? I NEED TO MEET HIM!"

"You WILL! He's coming later today! But—" She held up another finger. "Second: Mithun! He's my ACTUAL best friend—well, besides Akshi. We've known each other since we were kids. He's calmer than Chethan. Much calmer. He's like... the peacekeeper."

C.N. nodded approvingly. "Every chaos agent needs a peacekeeper."

"EXACTLY! He keeps Chethan from spontaneously combusting!"

---

Jay leaned over to Keifer. "More people."

"More chaos."

"More family."

He kissed her temple. "Always more family."

---

Chethan arrived at lunchtime.

They heard him before they saw him.

"SHREYA! SHREYA WHERE ARE YOU? I'M HERE AND I'M HUNGRY AND I'M EXCITED!"

The door burst open and a young man exploded into the dining area—twenty years old, all limbs and energy, with a grin that could power a small city.

He spotted Shreya and launched himself at her.

"SHREYA!"

"CHE THAN!"

They collided in a hug that somehow involved spinning.

Percy watched with delight. "HE'S MY PEOPLE!"

Akshi nodded. "I KNEW you'd say that!"

---

Chethan pulled back from Shreya and surveyed the room. His eyes landed on the group—all fifteen of them plus Akshi—and his grin widened.

"SO MANY PEOPLE! THIS IS AMAZING! Shreya said there were a lot but I didn't expect—" He counted. "—nineteen? Twenty? I lost count!"

"Seventeen including you and Mithun," Shreya corrected. "Mithun's coming later. He had to finish something."

"MIT HUN! My favorite buzzkill!"

"He's not a buzzkill!"

"He's a LOVING buzzkill!"

---

Shreya made introductions, and Chethan greeted each person with escalating enthusiasm.

When he reached Percy, they grabbed each other's hands and just... stared.

"Brother," Percy whispered.

"Brother," Chethan whispered back.

"WE'RE THE SAME PERSON!"

"I KNOW! I CAN FEEL IT!"

Honey watched them. "There are three of them now."

"Three chaos agents," Jay agreed. "We're doomed."

"The best kind of doomed."

---

Chethan met Keiran next, kneeling down to his level.

"And WHO is this small human with the dinosaur?"

Keiran held Rex up protectively. "I'm Keiran. This is Rex. Rex is my best friend."

Chethan's face went through several stages of delight. "Rex! What an HONOR! I'm Chethan! Can I shake Rex's paw?"

Keiran considered this. Then nodded. "Rex says yes."

Chethan solemnly shook Rex's tiny paw. "Best day of my life."

Keiran beamed. "Rex likes you."

"Rex has EXCELLENT taste!"

---

When Chethan reached Grace and Denzel, he spotted Grazel.

"A BABY! THERE'S A BABY!"

Grazel, in Grace's arms, stared at him with big eyes.

"Can I—can I see her? I'm REALLY good with babies! I have like seventeen younger cousins!"

Grace laughed. "Seventeen?"

"Extended family! It's a whole thing!"

She shifted Grazel so he could see. The baby studied him for a long moment. Then she smiled.

Chethan clutched his chest. "She smiled at me! SHREYA, SHE SMILED AT ME!"

Shreya patted his back. "She smiles at everyone."

"BUT SHE SMILED AT ME FIRST!"

---

By the time Mithun arrived, the group had already absorbed Chethan completely.

He was playing some game with Percy and Akshi, all three of them making increasingly ridiculous rules. Keiran was "helping." Rex was "refereeing."

Mithun walked in quietly—tall, calm, with observant eyes and a gentle smile. He took in the scene: his best friend Shreya laughing, his chaos-agent friend Chethan causing chaos, and a group of strangers who somehow already looked like family.

Shreya spotted him. "MITHUN!"

She ran over, pulling him into a hug. "You're HERE!"

"I'm here." He looked over her shoulder at the chaos. "I see Chethan has made friends."

"He's found his PEOPLE!"

Mithun smiled. "Of course he has."

---

Shreya led him through introductions.

Mithun was calm, polite, observant. He remembered everyone's names immediately. Asked thoughtful questions. Made everyone feel seen.

When he reached C.N., they had a brief conversation about something academic that made C.N.'s eyes light up.

"A kindred spirit," Rakii whispered.

"Definitely."

When he met Felix and Bridget, he simply said, "You two are lovely together." Felix actually blushed.

When he met Keiran, he knelt slowly, respectfully. "Hello, Keiran. I'm Mithun."

Keiran studied him. "You're quiet."

"I am."

"Rex likes quiet sometimes."

"Rex sounds very wise."

Keiran nodded. "Rex is."

---

Mithun reached Jay and Keifer last.

"You're the leaders," he said. It wasn't a question.

"We try to be," Jay said. "Mostly we just try to keep up."

Mithun smiled. "You're doing well. This group—" He glanced back at the chaos. "—is happy. That doesn't happen by accident."

Keifer nodded. "We've been lucky."

"Luck helps. But so does love." He looked at them both. "You have a lot of that."

Jay felt tears prick her eyes. "Thank you."

"Just observing." He smiled again. "I'm glad Shreya called me."

---

Later that evening, after dinner, the group scattered.

Some to the garden. Some to their rooms. Some to the rooftop to watch stars.

Jay and Keifer found a quiet corner overlooking the grounds. Keiran was with Akshi and Shreya, who had somehow become his new favorite people (Rex approved).

"Two weeks," Jay said softly.

"Two weeks."

"More time with all of them."

"More time with you." He pulled her close. "Always more time with you."

She leaned into him. "This trip has been... I don't have words."

"You don't need them."

"I know. But I want to say them anyway." She looked up at him. "I didn't know I could be this happy. I didn't know a person could feel this much."

"And now?"

"And now I know. Because of you. Because of them." She gestured vaguely toward the chaos. "Because of all of it."

He kissed her forehead. "I know exactly what you mean."

---

They stood in comfortable silence for a while.

Then Jay spoke again. "Chethan and Percy are going to be a problem."

"A beautiful problem."

"Akshi will enable them."

"Absolutely."

"Mithun will try to contain them."

"And fail, but gracefully."

She laughed. "We've collected so many people."

"The best people."

"Remember when it was just us? And Keiran and Keigan?"

"Feels like a lifetime ago."

"It does." She turned in his arms. "I love our life, Keif. I love our chaos. I love our family."

"I love you."

"I love you too." She kissed him softly. "Until the end of the universe."

"Until scientists find it and then keep going."

---

From somewhere inside, Percy's voice echoed: "CHETHAN! AGAIN! FASTER!"

Chethan's response: "I'M GOING AS FAST AS I CAN!"

Akshi: "I'M WINNING!"

Keiran: "REX SAYS CHEAT!"

Rex, apparently, had opinions.

Jay and Keifer looked at each other and laughed.

"Shall we go rescue them?" he asked.

"Rescue them from what? Having fun?"

"Fair point." He kissed her once more. "Five more minutes."

"Always five more minutes."
