Chapter Fifty-Two: The Saree and Panche Adventure

The evening after Chethan and Mithun joined the group, Shreya made an announcement that changed everything.

"OKAY EVERYONE! Tonight, we're doing something SPECIAL!"

Percy perked up immediately. "I LOVE SPECIAL!"

"You're going to experience Karnataka TRADITION! The girls will wear sarees, and the boys will wear shirt and panche!"

Blank stares from most of the group.

Shreya sighed dramatically. "Sarees are the beautiful draped dresses we wear! And panche is like—" She gestured. "—a cloth wrapped around? Very traditional? Very elegant?"

Chethan jumped in. "PANCHES ARE COMFORTABLE! You're going to LOVE them!"

Akshi nodded enthusiastically. "And we're going to help EVERYONE get dressed! It's going to be an ADVENTURE!"

---

The girls gathered in Shreya's room, which was already overflowing with colorful fabric.

Sarees in every color imaginable—silks, cottons, some with gold thread, some with intricate patterns. Blouses matched to each. Petticoats waiting.

Jay stared at the mountain of fabric. "There's so much."

"This is nothing!" Shreya laughed. "My mother sent like HALF her collection. The rest is from neighbors and aunts and—" She waved vaguely. "—everyone wanted to contribute!"

Rakii was already photographing everything. "The colors! The textures! This is amazing!"

Grace entered, Grazel on her hip. "Oh wow. This is beautiful."

Shreya rushed over to see the baby. "GRAZEL! You're going to look ADORABLE in a tiny saree!"

"She has one?"

"I MADE ONE! Well, my aunt helped. But it's TINY and PERFECT!"

---

The chaos began.

Shreya and Akshi tried to explain the process, but everyone had questions.

"Which side does the pleats go?"

"How tight is the petticoat?"

"What if I trip?"

"What if I can't breathe?"

"WHAT IF I CAN'T MOVE MY LEGS?"

That last one was Mica, already panicking.

Akshi patted her arm. "You'll be FINE! Women have been wearing these for THOUSANDS of years!"

"THOUSANDS of years and I can't figure it out in five minutes!"

"Practice makes perfect! And we have ALL evening!"

---

Shreya took charge, assigning helpers.

"Akshi, you take Jay and Honey! Mithun's sister Meera is coming to help too—she's an EXPERT! I'll take Ella, Rakii, and Freya! And Meera's mother is helping Mica and Bridget!"

"What about me?" Grace asked.

"You and Grazel are SPECIAL! We're doing you LAST, with ALL the attention you deserve!"

Grace laughed. "I like that plan."

---

The rooms became hubs of activity.

In one corner, Akshi was attempting to drape Jay's saree while Jay tried to hold still.

"OKAY so you tuck this part into the petticoat—no, wait, that's wrong—actually, maybe—" Akshi paused. "I've done this like a hundred times and I'm suddenly TERRIFIED!"

Honey laughed. "You're doing great!"

"I'M DOING TERRIBLE! But we'll fix it!"

Jay caught Honey's eye. "How's yours coming?"

Honey looked down at her half-draped saree. "I have no idea. But it's fun."

"That's the spirit!"

---

In another corner, Shreya was a whirlwind of efficiency.

"Ella, turn—good! Rakii, hold the pleats—yes! Freya, don't move!"

Freya stood like a statue. "I'm not moving."

"You're PERFECT!"

Ella smiled. "You've done this before."

"I've been draping sarees since I was TWELVE! My mother made me practice on EVERYONE!"

Rakii laughed. "Good training."

"The BEST training!"

---

Meera arrived—Mithun's sister, twenty-three, with the same calm presence as her brother but an unexpected wicked sense of humor.

"OKAY! Who needs the most help?"

Mica raised her hand frantically. "ME! I'M LOST!"

Meera surveyed Mica's current state—saree half-on, half-off, pleats going every direction. "Oh honey. We have work to do."

"I KNOW! HELP!"

"I'm HERE! We'll fix this!"

Bridget, nearby, was faring slightly better under Meera's mother's guidance. "You're a natural," the older woman said.

Bridget blushed. "I'm trying."

"Trying is all we need."

---

Meanwhile, in the men's quarters, chaos of a different kind reigned.

Chethan had laid out rows of white fabric—panches—and simple shirts.

"OKAY BOYS! This is EASY! You wrap the panche around your waist, tuck it, and BAM! You're done!"

Percy looked at the fabric skeptically. "That's it? Just... wrap?"

"Just wrap! Watch!"

Chethan demonstrated, wrapping the white cloth around his waist with practiced ease, creating neat folds, tucking securely.

"SEE? EASY!"

Percy tried.

The fabric ended up around his knees.

Chethan tried not to laugh. "OKAY, maybe not THAT easy. Let me help."

---

C.N. approached his panche with methodical precision.

He studied the fabric. Measured with his eyes. Attempted a fold.

It actually worked.

Chethan gaped. "HOW DID YOU DO THAT?"

C.N. shrugged. "Logic. Geometry. Understanding of textiles."

"You're a WIZARD!"

"I'm a genius. Same thing."

Rakii, passing by to grab something from her room, saw him and whistled. "Not bad, genius boy."

C.N. actually blushed. "Thank you."

---

David was having the opposite experience.

"THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE! It's like the fabric is ALIVE!"

Freya, already dressed and looking beautiful, watched him struggle. "Need help?"

"I NEED A MIRACLE!"

She walked over, gently took the fabric, and began wrapping. "I watched the tutorial. I think I can do it."

"You watched a TUTORIAL?"

"I like being prepared."

David stared at her with pure adoration. "I love you."

"I know. Now hold still."

---

Felix managed surprisingly well.

Bridget had helped him with the initial steps, then left to get dressed herself. He'd figured out the rest through sheer patience and a willingness to restart seven times.

Chethan watched him. "You're actually good at this."

"I'm good at following instructions. And I don't give up."

"That's the spirit!"

---

Keifer approached his panche with CEO energy.

He analyzed. Strategized. Attempted.

The result was... acceptable.

Chethan nodded approvingly. "Not bad for a first try."

"I've handled more complex mergers."

"I believe you. But this is harder, right?"

Keifer smiled slightly. "Significantly harder."

---

Keiran had his own tiny panche, made specially by Shreya's mother.

He stood proudly, Rex tucked under one arm, both of them wrapped in miniature versions of the traditional cloth.

"Pappa! Look! Me and Rex MATCH!"

Keifer knelt beside him. "You look amazing, buddy."

"Rex says thank you."

"Tell Rex he's welcome."

---

Aries was the last to finish, calmly working through the process with no drama.

Ella appeared in the doorway, fully dressed, and stopped.

He looked up. "What?"

She was staring. "You look... really good."

He glanced down at himself. "It's just fabric."

"It's NOT just fabric." She walked over, adjusted one fold slightly. "Now it's perfect."

He caught her hand. "You look beautiful."

"Thank you." She kissed him softly. "We clean up well."

"We do."

---

The reveal happened in the main hall.

The girls emerged first, one by one.

Jay in deep blue silk, gold thread catching the light. Honey in rich maroon, elegant and graceful. Ella in emerald green, regal and composed. Rakii in purple, already taking photos of everyone. Freya in soft pink, serene and lovely. Mica in bright orange, somehow managing to look comfortable. Bridget in golden yellow, glowing.

And Grace, last of all, with Grazel in her arms—both in matching tiny sarees, mother and daughter absolutely radiant.

The men, already gathered, went silent.

Percy found his voice first. "HONEY! YOU'RE—you're—" He ran out of words.

Honey smiled. "I'm what?"

"BEAUTIFUL! That's the word! BEAUTIFUL!"

C.N. stared at Rakii. "You look..."

"I know." She lifted her camera. "And I'm documenting this moment forever."

David grabbed Freya's hands. "PRETTY WIFE!"

"We're not married yet."

"PRETTY FUTURE WIFE!"

Felix simply took Bridget's hand, unable to speak.

Bridget squeezed back. "I know."

Mica spun for Calix. "HOW DO I LOOK?"

"Like chaos in the best possible way."

"I'LL TAKE IT!"

---

Keifer found Jay standing slightly apart, adjusting her saree.

He walked over slowly, taking her in.

Blue silk. Gold thread. Hair soft around her face. Eyes shining.

"Jay."

She looked up. "Yes?"

"You're..." He shook his head. "There aren't words."

"Try."

"You're everything. Every beautiful thing I've ever seen, wrapped into one person. Every sunset, every mountain, every temple—they're all just pale copies of you."

Her eyes filled with tears. "Keif."

"I mean it. I've never seen anything as beautiful as you right now."

She pulled him close, careful of the saree. "I love you."

"I love you too. More than all of this."

"More than India?"

"More than everything."

---

Keiran appeared between them, Rex held high. "Mamma! You're PRETTY!"

"Thank you, baby!"

"Rex says you're pretty too!"

"Tell Rex thank you!"

Keiran looked at Keifer. "Pappa, you look funny."

"It's traditional, buddy."

"Rex says it's okay."

"High praise from Rex."

---

Shreya gathered everyone for photos.

"OKAY! Everyone together! This is HISTORY! A Filipino-Karnataka fusion moment!"

They crowded together—fifteen plus Akshi, Chethan, Mithun, Shreya, Meera, and tiny Grazel.

Rakii set up her camera on a tripod, then ran to join.

The photo captured everything.

Percy making a face. Honey laughing at him. C.N. perfectly composed. Rakii mid-run. David and Freya holding hands. Mica on Calix's back. Felix and Bridget close together. Aries and Ella, solid and beautiful. Grace and Denzel with Grazel between them. Keiran on Jay's hip, Rex waving. Jay and Keifer in the center, looking at each other instead of the camera.

And around them, their new friends—Akshi, Shreya, Chethan, Mithun, Meera—absorbed into the chaos like they'd always been there.

Perfect.

---

After the photos, they sat together in the garden.

The night was warm, the stars bright, the sarees and panches rustling softly in the breeze.

Percy broke the comfortable silence. "I never want to leave."

"We have two weeks," Akshi reminded him.

"TWO WEEKS ISN'T ENOUGH!"

"It's never enough," Jay said softly. "But it's what we have."

Keifer pulled her closer. "And we'll make the most of every moment."

"Every moment," she agreed.

Keiran, half-asleep in her lap, murmured, "Rex says this is the best day."

"Rex is right, baby."

Grazel, in Grace's arms, let out a happy coo.

Everyone laughed.

The night held them close.
