Chapter 7 - Velvet Storms & Borrowed Courage

Morning arrived on campus like a busy orchestra warming up. Backpacks rustled, sneakers tapped across concrete, and sleepy students dragged themselves into lecture halls with cups of coffee clutched like survival potions.

For Lila, the morning lectures passed in a blur.

Not the peaceful blur of calm focus.

More like the kind where your brain keeps replaying a certain pair of warm brown eyes and a quiet smile that had somehow settled in your chest like a tiny glowing lantern.

Ethan.

She had unconsciously looked for him twice during her first lecture.

Then three times during the second.

And during the third lecture, she stopped pretending she wasn't looking.

But he never appeared.

Her notebook had the evidence of her wandering mind. Between notes about economic models and graphs were tiny absentminded doodles of basketballs... and a few random swirls she refused to analyze too deeply.

By the time the morning lectures ended, Cassandra stretched beside her with the dramatic exhaustion of someone who believed attending lectures was a heroic act.

"I swear," Cassandra groaned, stuffing her notebook into her bag, "if Professor Williams talks about supply and demand one more time, I'm going to demand sleep."

Lila laughed softly.

A small laugh.

Quiet like everything about her.

"You're the one who stayed up watching movies," she reminded gently.

Cassandra gasped like she had been betrayed.

"First of all," she said with mock seriousness, "those were documentaries."

"You were watching romantic comedies."

"They document romance!" Cassandra insisted.

Lila shook her head, smiling.

Her friend looped an arm around her shoulders.

"Anyway," Cassandra announced, "your girl is starving. Cafeteria?"

Lila nodded.

The cafeteria was already buzzing when they arrived.

The smell of fried rice, grilled chicken, and freshly baked bread drifted through the air like a culinary parade. Students crowded the lines, chatting loudly, laughing, arguing about assignments, and negotiating who would pay for whose food.

Cassandra joined the queue like she had entered a social arena.

Within seconds she was talking.

About everything.

And nothing.

"So I heard Mark tried to ask Jessica out again," Cassandra whispered dramatically.

Lila blinked.

"Again?"

"Yes! The third time this semester. At this point he's basically a motivational speaker for rejection."

Lila giggled.

Cassandra continued.

"And then—wait, did you hear about the basketball team party last night?"

Lila shook her head.

"I was working."

"Right, Miss Responsible." Cassandra nudged her. "But apparently the captain didn't even show up."

Something flickered in Lila's chest.

The captain.

Ethan.

She tried to sound casual.

"Oh."

Cassandra kept talking while the line slowly crawled forward.

"...and Madison wore this ridiculous outfit like she was attending the Met Gala instead of a college party..."

Lila nodded occasionally, but her mind had drifted again.

Where was Ethan today?

Did he skip lectures?

Was he sick?

Why did she even care so much?

Her thoughts were interrupted when Cassandra tapped her shoulder.

"Earth to Lila."

"Hmm?"

"It's your turn. Before the lady behind us eats you."

Lila blinked and stepped forward quickly.

They both got their food and finally moved away from the crowded line.

"Victory," Cassandra declared, holding her tray like a trophy.

They searched for a table.

Just as they were about to sit—

Someone slammed into Lila.

Hard.

Her tray jerked violently.

Rice, sauce, and juice splashed everywhere.

Right onto her shirt.

The cafeteria fell into a sudden hush.

Lila froze.

Sticky sauce soaked into the front of her blouse, dripping slowly down the fabric.

Her heart sank.

Before she could even react—

A sharp voice sliced through the air.

"Are you blind?!"

Lila looked up.

Victoria Hale stood in front of her.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

Perfectly cruel expression.

Behind her stood her usual shadows.

Madison and Claire.

Victoria looked down at her ruined designer blouse like someone had insulted royalty.

"You should really learn how to use your eyes," she snapped loudly. "Even if you don't use your brain."

A ripple of murmurs spread through the cafeteria.

Students began gathering.

Phones appeared.

Drama on campus was better than Netflix.

Cassandra stepped forward instantly.

"Hey—"

Victoria raised a manicured hand.

"I'm not talking to you."

Her eyes locked onto Lila.

Cold.

Sharp.

Predatory.

Lila swallowed.

"I… didn't bump into you," she said softly.

Victoria's smile vanished.

"What?"

"You… bumped into me."

Gasps.

The queen bee did not like being contradicted.

Victoria's eyes darkened.

"You little—"

She suddenly raised her hand.

And aimed it straight at Lila's face.

The cafeteria held its breath.

But the slap never landed.

A hand caught Victoria's wrist mid-air.

Firm.

Unmoving.

Everyone turned.

Ethan.

He stood there like a storm that had decided to wear a human form.

His jaw was tight.

Eyes dark.

Dangerously calm.

Victoria blinked in shock.

"Ethan?"

The murmuring exploded instantly.

"Oh my God."

"Did he just—"

"He's holding her hand!"

Victoria quickly recovered and twisted her expression into wounded innocence.

"Ethan, she spilled food all over me—"

"I saw what happened."

His voice was quiet.

But it carried across the entire cafeteria.

Silence dropped like a curtain.

Victoria's face went pale.

"You… what?"

"I saw everything."

His eyes moved to Lila.

And the sight of her made something twist painfully in his chest.

Her blouse was stained.

Her tray shook in her trembling hands.

Tears shimmered in her eyes.

And somehow that hurt him more than anything Victoria could have done.

Without another word, Ethan took the tray from Lila's hands.

Then gently took her wrist.

"Come on."

And led her out of the cafeteria.

Behind them, the whispers exploded.

Victoria stood frozen.

Humiliated.

Furious.

Outside, the fresh air felt colder.

Quieter.

Lila's tears finally slipped down her cheeks.

She wiped them quickly, embarrassed.

Ethan noticed.

Of course he noticed.

Every little thing about her had somehow become painfully visible to him.

He led her toward the parking lot.

His car waited there.

A sleek black machine that practically screamed expensive.

The driver had parked it earlier that morning after Ethan stormed out of the house refusing to be chauffeured.

Ethan opened the passenger door.

Lila hesitated.

She looked up at him with watery eyes.

Suspicion.

Uncertainty.

That look punched straight through his chest.

"I just want to help," he said softly.

"I'm taking you to change your clothes."

She nodded slowly.

And got in.

The drive started in silence.

An awkward one.

The kind where emotions fill the air thicker than oxygen.

Ethan gripped the steering wheel.

"I'm sorry," he finally said.

Lila blinked.

"For Victoria."

She stared down at her hands.

"It's not your fault."

Still.

"I should've stopped it sooner."

"It's not easy," she whispered.

Her voice cracked.

That single sentence carried years of quiet endurance.

Years of avoiding confrontation.

Of shrinking away.

Ethan suddenly pulled the car to the side of the road.

The sudden stop made her heart jump.

He turned toward her.

"Lila."

She looked up.

Her pulse started racing immediately.

His gaze was intense.

Focused.

"You need to stand up for yourself."

Her eyes dropped again.

"It's not easy."

Her voice trembled.

"I know."

He leaned closer slightly.

"But no one has the right to treat you like that."

His voice softened.

"You're special."

Her heart skipped.

"And you deserve respect."

Tears spilled down her cheeks again.

Ethan quickly grabbed a handkerchief and gently handed it to her.

"Here."

She wiped her face.

Sniffled.

Managed a small nod.

"Thank you."

He started the car again.

This time the silence felt lighter.

Warmer.

Soon they pulled into a boutique parking lot.

Lila's eyes widened.

"This place looks… expensive."

Ethan chuckled.

"A little."

"A little?"

She looked horrified.

He got out and opened the door for her.

When she stepped out, several people immediately stared.

Of course they did.

The stain on her clothes made it obvious something had gone wrong.

Lila shrank slightly under the attention.

Ethan noticed instantly.

And then—

He did something that stunned everyone.

He pulled off his T-shirt.

Right there.

Leaving only his white singlet.

The reaction was immediate.

Gasps.

Whispers.

A group of girls nearby literally started clapping.

One girl nearly dropped her phone.

Lila turned bright red.

"Ethan!"

But he simply draped the shirt over her shoulders.

"Put it on."

"I can't—"

He gently helped slide it over her head anyway.

The oversized shirt swallowed her small frame completely.

The girls nearby giggled.

One whispered loudly.

"She's so lucky."

Lila looked like she might faint from embarrassment.

Ethan smiled slightly.

Then guided her toward the boutique entrance.

Inside, the air smelled like perfume and luxury.

He led her to the women's section.

A sales assistant approached instantly.

And then froze when she saw Ethan.

Her eyes widened.

Recognition.

Then admiration.

Then full-blown starstruck energy.

"Welcome!" she said a little too eagerly.

Ethan gestured toward Lila.

"She needs a new outfit."

The assistant nodded quickly.

"I'll take care of her."

Her gaze flickered back to Ethan again.

Clearly trying not to stare.

But failing spectacularly.

Ethan turned to Lila.

"Go pick something you like."

Lila looked nervous.

He smiled reassuringly.

"I'll be right here."

And for the first time since the cafeteria incident…

She smiled too.

A small one.

But real.

And Ethan suddenly realized something dangerous.

He would burn the entire campus down if it meant protecting that smile.
