Chapter 13: - Vermillion City Gym!
Lyra and crew were staring at a sign, beaming with happiness. It said; Vermilion City.
"Finally, after two whole weeks of travelling, we have finally made it." Misty said.
"Still at least we caught some great new Pokémon." Lyra happily said about her new Eevee's.
"I'm going to have a nice bubbly bath." Misty said.
"I'm going to hit the laundry mat," said Brock, "we haven't washed our clothes for a while."
"Yeah, and I would like to take a nap and some food inside me." Lyra said.
"Don't forget our Pokémon need healing at the Pokémon Centre." Misty said. They all agreed to head straight to the Pokémon Centre.
While their Pokémon were being looked after by Nurse Joy, Lyra and crew had nice long bubbly baths and their clothes were being washed in the laundry room. Lyra and Brock went to their room first, after their bath and Brock and Lyra got their clothes back.
Lyra and Misty were out of the bath, "I needed that." Lyra said as she lay down on the bed, "I felt all grubby and dirty."
"Yeah, me too," Brock said, "not to mention our clothes started to smell a bit."
"I'm going to have a nice nap." Lyra said, who was now resting her head on the pillow.
"You do that," said Brock, "I'm going to stack up on some more supplies. We're nearly out of medicines." So, Brock went out shopping.
After refreshing themselves and their Pokémon, Lyra, Brock and Misty were still in the Pokémon Centre discussing about Lyra's third gym battle. "So have you decided yet?" asked Misty.
"Yep," Lyra said, "I'm going with Sandshrew."
"Good idea." said Brock. Just then they saw a trainer rushing into the Pokémon centre, carrying a very injured Ratatta. "Help please!" shouted the trainer, "My Ratatta needs help!"
Nurse Joy rushed over, "Oh no not another one," she said, "Chansey bring a stretcher immediately."
A Chansey brought out a stretcher at once and had the Ratatta placed on it, then rushed it to the operating room at once. "This is the fifteenth Pokémon this month" sighed Nurse Joy, "and they are all from the Vermilion Gym." When Lyra heard that, she figured that this would be a tough battle.
The gang took a look at the other victims, there was an Oddish, Sandshrew, Caterpie and a Pidgey, apart from Ratatta.
"I do beg your pardon." Lyra whispered to Brock and Misty, "but why use a Flying type against an Electric gym?"
Misty and Brock had to admit that wasn't a good idea but if it was Lyra's Flying type it would stand a chance.
To find out more about the Vermilion Gym, Lyra asked the trainers all about their battles. "Well Lt. Surge the Gym Leader is very strong." Ratatta's trainer said.
"Yeah, and his Raichu is no joke." Pidgey's trainer added.
'So, I'll be battling against a Raichu.' Thought Lyra who thinking about her own Raichu. "What attacks did Raichu use?" She asked.
"It used Thunderbolt, Body Slam, Mega Kick and Mega Punch." Sandshrew's trainer answered.
"Didn't it use speeding attacks like Quick attack and Agility?" Lyra asked.
"No, not once." Odisha's trainer answered.
Lyra thanked the trainers for the information and picked up his Pokémon.
'I wonder...' Lyra thought and trailed it off having a plan in mind.
"Are you going to be okay with this Gym Battle Mew?" Misty asked while they were walking to the Gym.
Lyra looked at Misty knowing if she used her middle name, she is worried, "Don't worry Mist it will be okay," said Lyra, "after all the info those trainers gave me, it will be okay."
They soon reached Vermilion Gym; it looked like a warehouse, with yellow lightning bolts all over it. "Well, here goes nothing." Lyra said, and opened the Gym doors. "I'm here for a gym battle."
"Ah, more victims for the Pokémon Centre." A female voice said.
Two figures revealed themselves; it was a man and woman, looking like army soldiers, with street punk make up on.
"Follow us." The man and woman together said.
The man and woman led the group to what looked like a boxing ring. "This is where you will battle our gym, Leader." The woman said.
"Lt. Surge sir!" The man shouted, "A trainer wishes to battle you sir!"
"Another one huh?" A male voice said. He was a big muscular man, with spiky hair and looked like a real army soldier. He had a Raichu beside him.
Raichu, the Mouse Pokemon.
The evolved form of Pikachu. It can shock its enemies with more than 100,000 volts.
"Who's my opponent?" Lt. Surge asked.
"I am." Lyra answered.
Lt. Surge took a good look at Lyra, Pichu and Pikachu and he smirked. "So, I'm battling a bunch of babies." He said confidently.
"Hey! Who the heck are you calling babies?" Lyra asked feeling very cross.
"Simple you three," Lt. Surge replied, pointing to them, "a little girl, an un-evolved Pichu and un-evolved Pikachu. I evolved my Pikachu into Raichu here as soon as I caught it."
While Pichu and Pikachu glared at Lt. Surge, for stating them that they are weak and feeling very insulted.
Lyra went wide eyed from hearing that, she knew that evolving Pokémon with stones right away wasn't a sensible thing to do. "Has anyone ever told you to never ever un-estimate a Pokémon by its appearance." She said with a smirk, "We'll see who the baby is after this match."
"You're brave kid, I'll give you that." Lt. Surge said. "You're on kid."
Lt. Surge and Lyra got ready to fight on the arena. "This gym battle is between Lt. Surge the Gym Leader and Lyra Mew Light the challenger," the man announced, "this is a 1 on 1 battle and whoever defeats the opponents Pokemon first wins. Let the match begin."
"Sandshrew, I choose you!" Lyra shouted as her Sandshrew was ready for battling.
"Raichu, front and centre." Lt. Surge commanded and Raichu's sparked its cheeks ready to battle.
"Let's get this battle over with," Lt. Surge said, "Raichu thunderbolt." Raichu shot a bolt of electricity to Sandshrew.
"Sandshrew use Swift to counter that move." said Lyra. The stars from Sandshrew collided with Raichu's thunderbolt and stopped it from reaching him.
"Use thunderbolt again!"
"Use Dig now." Lyra said and Sandshrew dived into the ground before the thunderbolt could hit him. Raichu had no idea where Sandshrew would be so it braced itself.
"Attack now with Rock Smash." Lyra said, Sandshrew burst out of the ground and hit Raichu badly with rock smash.
"Use Mega Kick." Commanded Lt Surge.
"Quick use Protect then Metal Claw." Sandshrew had a green orb protecting him and the mega kick recoil for Raichu, Sandshrew claws was glowing silver and it hit Raichu injuring it badly he squeaked in
pain. 'Time for my plan.' She thought, "Sandshrew use Rollout and keep on rolling." Sandshrew rolled and rolled. Lt. Surge commanded his Raichu to Body Slam the Sandshrew, but Raichu kept on missing.
"How can this be?" Lt. Surge asked.
Lyra smiled, "I'll tell you why. It's because you evolved your Raichu too fast. Raichu can only learn speeding attacks when it's still a Pikachu. That's why you're Raichu is so slow, you evolved it before teaching it quick attack and agility." She explained smartly.
Misty and Brock were amazed that Lyra thought of that. "Lyra sure is something." Misty said asking Brock as she continued watching the battle.
"I agree." Brock said, who is watching the battle.
"You're quite a trainer," said Lt. Surge, "but it finishes now."
"Sorry I don't think so," Lyra said with a smirk, "ready Sandshrew?" Sandshrew squeaked in response to his trainer and it then Sandshrew started to glow.
Sandshrew body begun to change form, he's body is mostly covered in sharp, brown quills formed from its tough, dry hide, it has two large claws on its paws and feet. These claws are its primary weapons, and are used for slashing, that can also be used for burrowing, it's claws and spikes can both break off and are shed regularly, but grow back quickly and can curl into a large ball to protect its white underbelly.
"Sandslash!" It cried out.
Sandslash, the Mouse Pokemon.
The evolved form of Sandshrew. It curls up, then rolls into foes with its back. Its sharp spines inflict severe damage.
New Moves: Brick Break, Rock Tomb, Aerial Ace, Night Slash, Gyro Ball, Crush Claw, Hyper Beam, Sunny Day, X Scissor, Stone Edge and Rest.
Lt. Surge was getting impatient. "Just because Sandshrew evolved," he said, "don't think that you will win. Raichu Thunderbolt full power." Raichu sent bolts of thunder all over the arena.
"Sandslash use Earthquake now." Lyra said.
The earthquake broke up the thunderbolt and struck Raichu really hard. Raichu was now panting heavily.
"Use thunderbolt again." Lt. Surge said, Raichu charged its cheeks but nothing happened. "What's wrong?" He asked his Raichu.
"It's over Lt. Surge." Lyra said with a smirk, "Raichu used up all of its electricity. Now Sandslash wrap this up with Night Slash." Sandslash night slash scratched Raichu really hard and then Raichu fainted with swirls in its eye. Lyra has won.
Lyra ran over to Sandslash and gave it a hug. "Thank you Sandslash," she said, "you're were amazing." Sandslash loved the hug his trainer was giving him.
Lt. Surge picked up his tired Raichu and walked over to Lyra. "I congratulate you Lyra," he said, "you gave me a wonderful battle." He held out his hand to Lyra.
Lyra giggled, "I liked this battle too." Lyra said giving her hand to Lt. Surge, "Although this battle was very shocking. Don't you two think so?" She asked her Pichu and Pikachu.
"Pipipichu!" "Pikapikachu!" (Yep, a very shocking battle!) They exclaimed happily jumping onto her shoulders and rubbed their cheeks against hers.
"Rairairaichu!" (You bet.) Lt. Surge Raichu said tiredly.
Lt. Surge chuckled at them and handed out a yellow and orange, eight-pointed star shape badge. "This is the Thunder Badge." He said giving it to Lyra, "You deserve this." Lyra of course accepted it and everyone clapped for her.
After receiving the Thunder Badge, Lyra and crew decided to sight see Vermilion City before they continued the journey.

1. Lyra is more intelligent than Ash in the anime. I still don't know why they made it that Ash got less Pokémon in the anime.
