Chapter 41 - The Missing Memory

The corridor fell silent after the voice disappeared.

Emily stood frozen.

Her breathing had become uneven, and the strange pressure inside her head was growing stronger.

Alexander noticed immediately.

"Emily?"

She pressed her fingers against her temple.

"I... I feel like something is trying to come back."

"What do you mean?"

Her eyes closed for a moment.

Images began flashing inside her mind.

Bright hospital lights.

Cold metal tables.

Voices speaking in low tones.

She could not understand the words, but the feeling was clear.

Fear.

Alexander stepped closer.

"Emily, look at me."

Her eyes opened slowly.

"There was a room," she whispered.

"What kind of room?"

"A white room."

Her voice trembled.

"And there were machines."

Alexander's expression darkened.

"Medical machines?"

She nodded slowly.

"I think so."

Another sharp flash crossed her mind.

This time the memory was clearer.

A man standing beside the bed.

Watching her.

Taking notes.

Her breathing quickened.

"I remember someone," she said.

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

"Who?"

Emily struggled to focus.

"The man from the photograph."

Her voice dropped.

"He was there."

Silence fell between them.

Because that meant the man had been part of her life far longer than they realized.

Alexander turned toward the broken monitor.

"If they were experimenting on you..."

He stopped himself.

Emily looked at him.

"Say it."

His jaw tightened.

"Then your entire childhood may have been controlled."

Emily felt the ground beneath her shift.

Controlled.

That meant nothing in her life had been normal.

Nothing had been random.

Every moment.

Every decision.

Every memory.

It could all have been planned.

Her chest tightened.

"Alexander..."

He met her gaze.

"Yes?"

"What if they didn't just erase my memories?"

Her voice trembled slightly.

"What if they replaced them?"
