Chapter 40 - The One Who Knows

The red emergency lights continued flashing across the corridor.

Emily could hear the distant alarm echoing through the hidden facility. The sound made her heart beat faster with every passing second.

Something was very wrong.

Alexander stood in front of her, his eyes fixed on the large screen at the end of the hallway.

The blurry figure was still there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Almost like it had been expecting them.

Emily swallowed slowly.

"Who are you?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

The figure did not answer immediately.

Instead, the image flickered for a moment as if the signal was unstable.

Alexander stepped forward, his expression cold and unreadable.

"If you brought us here just to play games," he said calmly, "then you are wasting your time."

For a brief moment there was only silence.

Then the voice returned.

Calm.

Controlled.

And strangely familiar.

"You always were impatient, Alexander."

Emily froze.

The man on the screen knew him.

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

"Show your face."

A quiet chuckle echoed from the speakers.

"Not yet."

Emily felt a strange chill run through her body.

There was something about that voice that made her uneasy. Not just because it sounded threatening, but because it felt... close.

Too close.

The figure leaned slightly forward.

"Tell me, Emily," the voice continued.

"Do you remember the night everything changed?"

Emily's breathing stopped.

Her mind suddenly felt heavy, like something inside her memories was trying to push its way out.

"I don't know what you're talking about," she said quickly.

But even as the words left her mouth, she knew they were not entirely true.

Something inside her mind was stirring.

Alexander noticed the change in her expression.

"Emily?"

She placed a hand against her head.

A faint pain was beginning to spread through her temples.

"I...

Her voice faltered.

"I think I remember something."

The lights flickered again.

The screen suddenly changed.

Images began flashing rapidly.

Photos.

Documents.

Videos.

Emily stared in shock.

Most of them were pictures of her.

Some were from when she was a child.

Others were taken during her teenage years.

A few were recent.

Very recent.

Alexander's expression darkened.

"They've been tracking her for years," he said quietly.

The voice from the screen spoke again.

"Tracking?"

Another soft laugh echoed.

"No."

The figure paused.

"We were guiding her."

Emily felt her stomach twist.

Guiding her?

"What does that mean?" she demanded.

The images on the screen suddenly stopped.

Now there was only one picture.

It showed a small girl standing in a hospital hallway.

Emily recognized the girl immediately.

It was her.

She looked no older than eight years old.

Her eyes widened.

"I remember that hospital," she whispered.

Alexander turned toward her.

"You do?"

She nodded slowly.

"My parents told me I was sick that year."

Her fingers trembled slightly.

"But... I don't remember what happened inside that building."

The figure on the screen spoke softly.

"Of course you don't."

A pause.

"We made sure of that."

Alexander's voice turned dangerously cold.

"What did you do to her?"

The figure ignored him.

Instead, it spoke directly to Emily again.

"You were special from the beginning."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

"Yes," the voice replied calmly.

"You were chosen."

Her chest tightened.

Chosen?

"For what?" she asked.

The figure leaned closer to the camera.

For a moment, the distortion faded slightly.

Emily tried to focus on the face behind the screen.

But before she could see clearly, the image glitched again.

"You were the key," the voice continued.

"The only one capable of completing the project."

Alexander's patience finally snapped.

He stepped forward and slammed his hand against the control panel near the wall.

"Enough riddles."

His voice echoed through the corridor.

"If you want to talk, show yourself."

For a few seconds the screen remained completely still.

Then slowly...

The figure stood up.

The camera adjusted.

And the shadow began walking toward the light.

Emily's heart began pounding violently.

She did not know why.

But something deep inside her mind was screaming.

Warning her.

The person on the screen was important.

More important than she could imagine.

The figure stopped just before stepping fully into the light.

Emily held her breath.

Then the voice spoke one last time.

"You really don't remember me, do you?"

Silence filled the hallway.

Alexander looked at Emily.

Her face had gone pale.

Because somewhere deep inside her mind...

A memory was trying to return.

And if it did...

Everything she believed about her past would change forever.
