In reality, for Gary, being a human cannonball wasn't that scary. After all, dragged around by an adrenaline junkie like Ash, Gary had been forced into plenty of extreme activities, and he had to admit that the events Ash planned were actually pretty fun.
With the main performances over, Ash and the gang began to properly enjoy the carnival—because a carnival should be treated like a carnival. However, trouble always seems to strike right when you're having the most fun. Just as Ash and his friends were enjoying themselves, a massive horde of Exeggutor came charging toward them like a stampede.
"Run! The Exeggutors are rampaging!"
"Ahhhhh!"
With people warning each other, everyone quickly realized that the Exeggutors were charging straight toward the carnival for some unknown reason.
"What's going on? I know there are Exeggutors nearby, but they shouldn't just randomly attack, right?" Ash was genuinely confused looking at the herds of Exeggutor charging their way. Had these Exeggutor gone mad?
Beside him, Meowth looked through a pair of binoculars and said in surprise, "Boss, they're being collectively controlled by Hypnosis!"
"You're saying they're all under mass Hypnosis?!"
Ash took the binoculars from Meowth to look, while Pikachu peered through the other lens from his shoulder.
Through the binoculars, Ash noticed the vacant, glazed-over eyes of the Exeggutors. He also unexpectedly spotted Team Rocket mixed in with them.
"Team Rocket got hit by it too? Is someone intentionally causing trouble?"
Seeing Team Rocket also hypnotized, Ash began to suspect someone was deliberately targeting him. Even though he usually believed in harmony generating wealth, it was inevitable that some malicious people might try to screw him over.
Just then, Misty, Suzie, Lara, Gary, and Brock ran over. "What's the situation? Find anything?"
"The Exeggutors are under the influence of Hypnosis. We need to knock them out of it first."
"There's no need!"
Before Ash could finish, the mayor of this small city ran over.
"Please evacuate immediately! I absolutely will not allow these Exeggutor to destroy this city! After receiving the warning, we've already planted time bombs along their path. That will stop them."
Misty and the others were shocked to hear the mayor say this. Ash, however, patted the mayor's shoulder. "There's no need. The Continental Hotel will take care of it. Please defuse the bombs."
The mayor paused at Ash's words, then asked, "Are you sure? You have to understand, as mayor, I cannot allow Exeggutor to destroy my city."
Looking at the mayor, Ash nodded very seriously. "Rest assured. The Continental Hotel's reputation isn't just empty talk."
"Alright then. We will defuse the bombs, and we'll leave the Exeggutor to you. I hope your Continental Hotel can resolve this perfectly." With that, the mayor left.
After he was gone, Suzie asked curiously, "I thought you'd be really angry, Ash. I mean, they were planning to use bombs..."
"If it were any other time, I would be angry. But what this mayor is doing is protecting his own city. What right do I have to criticize a mayor who is looking out for his people?"
While Ash did love Pokemon, it didn't mean he was blindly irrational about it. The mayor's decision, though cruel, was an effective way to ensure the safety of his citizens and their property.
"Meowth, have the Continental Hotel staff bring out the Fire-type Pokemon immediately. Exploud, we're going to need your help!"
"Looooud!" (No problem!) Exploud nodded at Ash, signaling he was ready to go.
With Meowth's orders, the Continental Hotel personnel quickly arrived with their Fire-type Pokemon.
"Lara, have Ponyta help out too. Houndoom, Dragonite, Arcanine, Rapidash, Charizard—you're up! Everyone else, listen up! Do not stand in front of Exploud and his group! Once we halt the Exeggutors' advance, hit them with Flamethrower and wake them up! Is everyone ready?"
"Ready!"
"Exploud! Loudred! Whismur! Uproar Chorus, go!!"
"Roooaaaarrrr!!"
"Awooooo!!"
"Whismurrrr!!!"
Accompanied by the terrifying sonic assault from Exploud, Loudred, and Whismur, the Exeggutors—despite being hypnotized—subconsciously slowed their pace due to the ear-piercing noise.
Ash, whose ears were being covered by Gardevoir, saw this and shouted, "Now! Everyone, use Flamethrower!"
"Rooaaar!"
With countless streams of fire, the Exeggutors enjoyed a passionate baptism of flames. Under the intense heat, large swathes of Exeggutor began to snap out of their trance.
"Excellent, just the last batch now. Charizard, aim your maximum-power Fire Spin at the sky! Gardevoir, I don't need you covering my ears right now, use Confusion to control the Fire Spin and smack the remaining Exeggutor awake!"
"Gar..." (Honestly, Darling has zero romance in him...)
Reluctantly pulling her hands away from Ash's ears, Gardevoir nodded at Charizard. Seeing this, Charizard unleashed his most powerful Fire Spin into the sky. Of course, right now, rather than a Fire Spin, it looked more like a flaming tornado.
"Gar!" (It's over!)
With a wave of Gardevoir's hand, powerful psychic energy manipulated the fire tornado, slapping the remaining Exeggutor completely awake. Or rather, knocking them flat.
Looking at the field littered with downed Exeggutor, Ash scratched his head and said to Pikachu beside him, "It seems we might have used a bit too much force..."
Pikachu surveyed the field of unconscious Exeggutors, scratched his little head, and nodded.
"Pika..." (Let's just pretend nothing happened...)
