Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Library Below

The wind had died down by the time Cassian, Elara, and Aurora reached the central courtyard again. Night had deepened over Ravencrest University, and the quiet of the campus felt heavier now that they had seen the distant movement beyond the city skyline.

Migrating monsters.

The thought lingered in the back of Cassian's mind, but he pushed it aside for now. The campus still wasn't secure. If those creatures eventually reached Ravencrest, the last thing they needed was internal instability.

Elara studied the scanner again.

"Two fractures remain," she said. "Library basement and maintenance tunnels."

Aurora stretched her arms overhead and cracked her neck. "Library sounds easier."

Cassian nodded.

"Then we start there."

The Ravencrest Library stood at the center of campus like a monument to the old world. Tall stone columns framed the entrance, and massive glass windows reflected the moonlight. Before the Mana Wave, it had been one of the busiest places on campus.

Now the doors were partially open, and the interior lights flickered faintly.

Aurora pushed the doors wider.

"Well, if anything eats us in here, at least we'll die surrounded by books."

Elara gave her a small look of disapproval.

"Your sense of humor remains questionable."

Aurora grinned.

Cassian stepped inside first.

The air immediately felt different.

Cooler.

Heavier.

Mana drifted slowly through the building like fog, especially toward the rear staircase that led underground.

Elara's scanner lit up again.

"Confirmed," she said quietly. "The fracture is below."

Aurora leaned over the railing and looked down the dark stairwell.

"Creepy basement. Of course."

Cassian moved forward.

"Stay close."

They descended carefully.

The lower level of the library contained archival storage rooms, old research materials, and temperature-controlled document vaults. The hallway lights barely worked, leaving long shadows stretching across the floor.

The mana density here was significantly higher.

Cassian could feel the pressure building with every step.

Aurora suddenly stopped walking.

"You hear that?"

Cassian listened.

At first there was nothing.

Then a faint scratching sound echoed from the far end of the corridor.

Not heavy like the Ravagers from the engineering labs.

Something smaller.

Elara frowned.

"That fracture may be spawning a different species."

Aurora smirked.

"Great. Variety."

They moved deeper into the basement hallway.

Rows of metal archive shelves lined the walls, but many had been knocked over. Papers scattered across the floor like fallen leaves.

The scratching grew louder.

Then something darted between the shelves.

Aurora's eyes narrowed.

"Oh, that's fast."

Cassian's system chimed.

[Enemy Detected]

[Shadow Scuttler – Level 9]

A creature burst out from beneath a fallen shelf.

It was roughly the size of a large cat but far more unsettling. Its body looked like a twisted mixture of spider and rodent, with elongated limbs and dark chitinous plating that absorbed the dim light around it.

Aurora's grin returned instantly.

"Well, that's unpleasant."

The creature shrieked and lunged.

Aurora stepped forward and swung her fist.

The Scuttler twisted midair, narrowly avoiding the strike, and landed on the wall beside her.

"Fast," she admitted.

Two more creatures skittered out from the shadows.

[Shadow Scuttler – Level 8]

[Shadow Scuttler – Level 10]

Cassian raised his hand.

[Mana Construct Activated]

The familiar grid of blue energy spread across the basement floor.

[Mana Consumed: 16]

The creatures reacted immediately, scattering across the walls and ceiling as if the ground itself had become hostile territory.

Aurora watched them crawl upside down along the ceiling.

"Alright, that's cheating."

One of the Scuttlers dropped directly toward Elara.

She didn't move.

Instead, she lifted two fingers and released a precise pulse of condensed mana.

The attack struck the creature midair.

The Scuttler exploded into fragments of black chitin.

Aurora laughed.

"Nice one."

The remaining two creatures lunged simultaneously.

Aurora intercepted one with a brutal upward punch that sent it crashing into the ceiling. The second landed near Cassian and attempted to slash at his leg.

Cassian shifted slightly.

The grid beneath the creature pulsed.

The floor suddenly hardened with condensed mana pressure, pinning the Scuttler's legs for just a moment.

Long enough.

Aurora spun and delivered a crushing kick that shattered the creature's body.

[Enemy Eliminated]

The final Scuttler attempted to retreat back into the shadows.

Cassian extended his senses.

[Mana Pulse]

A short wave of energy rippled across the room.

The creature fell from the ceiling, stunned.

Aurora finished it instantly.

[Enemy Eliminated]

Silence returned to the basement.

Aurora wiped a bit of dark residue from her sleeve.

"Okay, those things were disgusting."

Elara was already moving toward the end of the hallway.

"The fracture is behind that archive room."

Cassian followed.

The final door stood half-open.

Inside, the room had been almost completely consumed by thick crystalline growths. Mana crystals jutted from the walls and ceiling like frozen lightning.

At the center of the room hovered another fracture.

Larger than the one in the engineering labs.

Dark energy leaked steadily from the tear.

Aurora whistled softly.

"That one's been feeding for a while."

Elara nodded.

"Yes. If left alone, it would have formed a dungeon entrance within a few days."

Cassian studied the fracture carefully.

It pulsed irregularly.

Unstable.

More Scuttlers might emerge at any moment.

Aurora glanced at him.

"Destroy it?"

Cassian considered the option.

Then he shook his head.

"No."

He raised his hand.

[Mana Construct: Domain Stabilization]

A far more complex pattern spread across the room than before, weaving between the crystal formations and surrounding the fracture completely.

[Mana Consumed: 48]

The tear resisted at first, pulsing violently.

Then the construct tightened.

Slowly…

The fracture began shrinking.

Elara watched with interest.

"You're integrating it into the domain again."

Cassian nodded slightly.

"Every stabilized fracture strengthens the campus network."

The tear collapsed with a faint pulse.

[Micro-Fracture Stabilized]

[Domain Expansion Progress: 79%]

Aurora stretched her arms again.

"Alright. One left."

Cassian looked toward the scanner.

Maintenance tunnels beneath the west wing.

Elara's expression grew slightly serious.

"That one might be more complicated."

Aurora tilted her head.

"How so?"

Elara turned the screen so they could see.

The final marker wasn't blinking.

It was pulsing steadily.

And it was far larger than the others had been.

Cassian's system chimed again.

[Warning]

[Unidentified Entity Detected Within Maintenance Tunnel Network]

Aurora smiled slowly.

"Well now."

Cassian turned toward the stairwell leading back to the surface.

"Looks like the campus saved the hardest one for last."

Aurora cracked her knuckles as they began heading for the tunnels.

"Good."

Her grin widened.

"I was starting to get bored."
