Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – The Results

After weeks of waiting, the California Bar Examination results were finally scheduled to be released on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.

At exactly 4:57 p.m., Aurelia Vale sat nervously on her couch, staring at her laptop screen. The State Bar of California Applicant Portal kept refreshing slowly, the loading icon spinning again and again.

Her fingers tapped restlessly against the arm of the couch.

"Finally," she murmured, trying to steady her breathing. "The results are coming out."

The clock on the wall ticked closer.

4:59 p.m.

Her heart began pounding.

Then the minute hand reached 5:00.

Aurelia quickly refreshed the page and squeezed her eyes shut.

"One… two… three…"

She slowly opened one eye.

The screen had loaded.

For a moment, she simply stared.

Then realization hit her.

"Oh my God."

Her voice rose suddenly.

"I passed… I PASSED! AHHHHH"

Aurelia jumped to her feet, climbing onto the couch in excitement.

Years of study, sleepless nights, endless cases and textbooks—

And now she was officially an attorney.

"I need to call Mom! Where's MY phone, ohh there it is!!"

She grabbed her phone and dialed immediately.

After a few rings, the call connected.

"Aurelia?" her mother's sleepy voice answered. "Is everything alright? It's two in the morning here in Rome."

"Mom," Aurelia said breathlessly, unable to hide her excitement.

"I passed the California Bar Exam!"

There was a brief silence.

Then her mother gasped.

"You did? Aurelia, that's wonderful! Congratulations, my dear!"

Aurelia laughed, still overwhelmed.

"And you know what? The big law firms are opening interviews soon. This might actually be my chance."

Her mother's voice warmed with pride.

"You worked very hard for this. Which firms are you thinking of applying to?"

Aurelia paused, thinking carefully.

"There are two I've always admired," she said. "The Montclair Group… and Blackwood JLE Law Firm."

"Those are prestigious firms," her mother replied.

"I know," Aurelia said. "But I want to try."

"Well, I'm proud of you regardless," her mother said softly. "I wish I could be there to celebrate."

Aurelia smiled.

"Don't worry, Mom. Get some sleep. We'll celebrate properly when you visit."

"Good night, sweetheart."

"Good night."

After ending the call, Aurelia leaned back on the couch with a satisfied smile.

Tonight deserved a celebration.

An hour later, she stepped out of a clothing store carrying several bags.

Inside were three professional suits—black, navy blue, and charcoal gray—along with two elegant black briefcases.

If she was going to walk into those interviews, she was going to look the part.

Across the State

While Aurelia celebrated her success, preparations were already underway in two of California's most influential legal institutions.

Both firms were preparing for the same thing.

The arrival of a new generation of lawyers.

And the competition to hire the best among them.

The Montclair Group

Inside a large corner office overlooking the city, Vincent Montclair sat behind his desk.

The office was spacious and modern, designed to reflect both authority and prestige.

His assistant, Mr. Sanchez, stood across from him holding a tablet.

"Mr. Sanchez," Vincent said calmly, "have the hiring announcements been released?"

"Yes, sir. The media notices went out this morning."

"Good."

Vincent leaned back slightly in his chair.

"Inform Mr. Flores, Miss Perez, and Mrs. Gracia to begin preparing the interview schedule."

"Of course, sir."

Sanchez made a note.

"There will be three rounds of selection," Vincent continued. "From the second round onward, I will personally attend."

"Understood."

Sanchez hesitated before asking,

"Anything else, sir?"

Vincent's gaze shifted briefly toward the window.

"Yes."

His voice remained calm but firm.

"Make sure the best candidates walk through our doors… not Blackwood's."

Sanchez nodded confidently.

"With respect, sir, the Montclair reputation speaks for itself."

Vincent gave a faint smile.

"We'll see."

Blackwood JLE Law Firm

At the same time, inside the polished halls of Blackwood JLE, preparations were also underway.

Senior attorney Margot Hernandez walked briskly through the hallway with her secretary, Mr. Martinez, beside her.

"Mr. Martinez," she said, reviewing documents in her hands, "the Montclair Group will be recruiting aggressively this year."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Then make sure our offer stands out. The best advocates should choose Blackwood, not Montclair."

Martinez nodded.

"We're already preparing the recruitment campaign."

"Good," Hernandez replied.

"Because this year… we intend to win."

And So It Begins

Two powerful firms.

One generation of new lawyers.

And a competition that would shape the careers of many—including Aurelia Vale.

What none of them knew yet…

Was that one rainy evening had already connected two of those futures.
