Chapter 17 - The Factory

Smoke rose from the eastern edge of the domain.

Not the smoke of war. The smoke of creation.

I stood on a hill overlooking the valley where our first factory was rising. Wooden frames. Stone foundations. A river diverted to power wheels that didn't exist yet.

But they would.

Soon.

[INDUSTRIAL PHASE 2: STEAM ENGINE PROTOTYPE - 0% COMPLETE]

[REQUIRED RESOURCES: IRON (HIGH), COPPER (MEDIUM), SKILLED LABOR (CRITICAL)]

[ESTIMATED TIME: 3-6 MONTHS]

Three months.

Haruki would need at least six to build his rebellion.

We had time.

Barely.

The workers looked at me strangely when I first explained.

"Fire heats water. Water becomes steam. Steam pushes pistons. Pistons turn wheels." I pointed at the river. "Wheels do the work of a hundred men."

They nodded politely, then glanced at each other with expressions that clearly said the Lady has finally lost her mind.

I didn't blame them.

Steam engines belonged to a world centuries away. A world where I'd once sat in a cramped apartment, eating ramen, watching YouTube videos about industrial revolution tech.

Now I was building one.

With my hands.

With her hands.

With our hands.

Ren found me that evening, covered in soot, nursing blistered fingers.

"You look like a warrior after battle."

"Different kind of battle." I flexed my hands. "Harder than I expected."

He took them gently. Examined the blisters.

"You could let others do this. That's why you have workers."

"Workers who don't understand what I'm building." I shook my head. "I have to show them. Make them believe it's possible. If they don't believe, they won't build it right."

"And if it fails?"

I met his eyes.

"It won't."

[WORKER CONFIDENCE: SKEPTICAL BUT COOPERATIVE]

[KAITO-HIROSHI REPUTATION: ECCENTRIC GENIUS]

The weeks blurred.

Days in the factory, teaching, measuring, cursing. Nights with Ren, exhausted but satisfied. Reports from Tanaka about Haruki's progress—slow but steady, gathering malcontents and ambitious minor lords.

The engine took shape.

A cylinder here. A piston there. Seals that leaked until I redesigned them. Valves that stuck until I remembered a detail from a forgotten video.

Every small victory felt like climbing a mountain.

Every setback felt like falling.

One night, I woke gasping.

A dream. Hiroshi's dream. His apartment. His loneliness. The silence that had almost swallowed him.

Ren stirred beside me.

"Bad dream?"

"Good dream. Old dream." I lay back, heart pounding. "I forgot what it felt like. Being alone."

He pulled me closer.

"You're not alone anymore."

"I know." I pressed against him. "That's what scared me. For a moment, I couldn't remember who I was before. Before her. Before you. Before all of this."

"You're still him."

"Part of me."

"And part of her. And part of something new." He kissed my forehead. "That's not something to fear. That's something to become."

I closed my eyes.

Listened to his heartbeat.

Let it anchor me.

The first successful test came on a grey afternoon.

Workers gathered around the crude machine. Water heated in the boiler. Steam hissed through pipes. The piston moved—slowly, awkwardly, but moved.

Then the wheel turned.

Just once. Then again. Then again.

Silence.

Then someone cheered.

Then everyone.

I stood there, covered in grease, watching a wheel turn, feeling like I'd just conquered an empire.

Ren appeared beside me.

"You did it."

"We did it." I corrected. "Every worker who hammered, every smith who forged, every person who believed when it seemed impossible."

He smiled.

"What now?"

I looked at the machine. At the wheel still turning. At the future unfolding before us.

"Now we build more. Bigger. Better. And when Haruki comes—if he comes—we'll be ready."

[NEW QUEST: INDUSTRIALIZE THE DOMAIN - 0% COMPLETE]

[REWARD: RAILWAYS, FACTORIES, MODERN ARMY]

[HARUKI'S REBELLION: 60% COMPLETE]

[WARNING: TIMELINE NARROWING]

That night, we celebrated.

Not with feasts or speeches. Just us. Just the quiet joy of building something together.

"I never imagined this," Ren admitted. "When I was in that cell, I dreamed of escape. Of revenge. Of finding her again. I never dreamed of this."

"Of what?"

"Peace." He looked at me. "Happiness. A future."

I touched his face.

"Neither did I."

We stayed like that for a long time.

Two people. Three souls. One love.

And a world waiting to be transformed.
