Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Underworld Bleeds

Three Gate fractures opened in Veramore overnight.

Not the gradual fissuring that had been building in the fracture ring, three simultaneous full breaches, the barriers shattering with enough force that the ambient mana detonation was felt by every Hunter in the city as a pressure wave at three AM. Liu Yun was awake when it happened, working through strategy with Sera and Herald in the safe house's analysis space, and the wave hit him like being underwater when something large moves past.

His Void Sight lit up.

Through the walls, through the city's mana field, he could see three points of red intensity, not the diffuse red of normal Gate creature auras but the concentrated burning crimson of a forced breach, creatures pushing through a damaged barrier with intent rather than drifting through an opportunistic crack. Bael's scouts. He had identified three of them in the northern wilderness over the past two weeks, now they had moved.

"They're in the city," he said.

Sera was already at her communication array. "The Association's emergency protocol will activate in forty-five seconds. Response teams"

"Response teams will contain the creatures they can see," Liu Yun said. "These aren't standard Gate breach entities. These are Seventh Layer scouts. D-rank physical capability but intelligence-level equivalent to S-rank. They're not here to fight, they're here to observe and report."

"To Bael." Sera understood immediately. "They're mapping Liu Yun's location."

"My location, my capabilities, the city's mana field integrity, everything Bael needs to know before his Avatar arrives." He was already moving. "If they report back, he accelerates the timeline."

"And if you stop them?"

"Then he knows I can detect and intercept his scouts, which is also information." He pulled on his jacket. "The difference is it's information that might make him cautious instead of confident."

He went out into the pre-dawn city.

The streets had the specific quality of three AM, the absolute quiet between the last night-people and the first morning-people, punctuated by the distant sound of Association emergency sirens as the standard response teams mobilized for the three Gate breaches. He moved through it with Shade visible at his shoulder and the rest of the army contained, following his Void Sight's red-crimson markers.

The first scout was in the Eastgate district, in the burned-out block that had made the news two months ago. It had taken the form of something approximately human-shaped, slightly too tall, its surface a smooth darkness that absorbed ambient light. It was standing in the ruins looking north, in the direction of the safe house, and its attention had the focused quality of a telescope rather than an eye.

He came at it from behind and deployed Nyx.

He had not used Nyx in combat yet. He had been saving the First General for Sector 2. But three scouts in his city at three AM seemed sufficient justification.

Nyx materialized between him and the scout and the scout turned with the speed of something that had never encountered a threat before and now, for the first time, was encountering one. It made no sound. It moved, an attempt to slip into shadow and transit back to wherever it had come from. Void-type entities could move through shadows, so could Nyx, and Nyx was faster.

The scout was gone in four seconds. Extracted.

The second scout was in the transit tunnels below Sector 5, moving through the maintenance passages with a knowledge of the infrastructure that suggested it had been mapping the city for longer than three weeks. It had two smaller sub-entities with it, fragmentary extensions of itself, and all three went down to Fenris in a space where a sixty-percent-scale mythological void-wolf comfortably fit in the maintenance tunnel's infrastructure, barely.

The third scout was more difficult.

It had found the fracture ring point nearest the safe house and was actively consuming the fracture-stress energy, using it to expand the breach, turning a natural crack into a deliberate opening. If it completed the expansion, the breach would be stable enough for a direct Seventh Layer incursion without a Gate structure, which was a different category of problem entirely.

He arrived at the fracture point, an alley behind a commercial block in the Midgate district, to find the scout already three-quarters of the way through its work. The breach above it was glowing: a vertical tear in reality approximately one meter wide and growing, its edges pulling back like lips drawn from teeth, the Seventh Layer visible through it as a vertical strip of absolute darkness edged in molten red.

He felt the pull. Not the Void Portal's controlled creation, this was something being forcibly opened, and the force was coming from the other side.

He activated Shadow Domain.

The two hundred meter radius of advanced void-suppression settled over the alley like a descending curtain, violet-edged and absolute, and the scout hit the suppression field and staggered as if it had walked into a physical barrier. The expansion of the breach stopped. The edges of the tear ceased pulling back.

He extracted the scout before it could recover.

Then he stood in the alley under his own void-dark Domain and looked at the one-meter breach in reality and the strip of Seventh Layer darkness and the molten-red edges, and he reached out, not physically, not with Void Extraction, but with something the system had not named yet, an instinct that felt ancient and inevitable, and he pushed.

The breach closed.

Not with a bang. With a precise, clean finality, like a book being shut.

He stood in the alley alone, Shade at his heel, the city's three AM silence around him, the Association sirens now moving away toward the contained breaches in the other sectors.

[NEW ABILITY UNLOCKED VOID SEAL:][Active. Close an existing Gate fracture by inverting the void pressure at the breach point. Permanently eliminates fracture-stress residue. Cost: High. Effect: Sealed fractures do not reopen.]

He looked at the clean alley wall where the breach had been.

He could seal fractures. He could close the ring.

Eight fracture points remained in the degradation pattern. With Void Seal, he could restore the city's mana field integrity before the Avatar arrived, cutting off the preparation that Bael had been conducting for months.

But the Sector 2 formation was still there. Growing. And now, with three of Bael's scouts extracted into his Register, the Demon King knew his scouts were gone.

The timeline had just changed again.

He walked home through the three AM streets with his army in his shadow and the city quiet around him and thought:

It's time to stop being careful.
