Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Sovereign Revealed

Sealing the fracture ring took three nights.

Eight remaining fracture points, each one a location where the barrier between the mortal world and the Underworld had been systematically weakened over weeks of Seventh Layer pressure. Liu Yun worked through them systematically, moving in the pre-dawn hours when the streets were quiet and the Association's patrol patterns were predictable. Sera ran interference, her Association contacts fed her the patrol schedules, and her own ice-sense detected the scout patterns of any remaining Underworld observers.

Each fracture point took thirty to forty minutes: assess the stress pattern, position to maximize Void Seal efficiency, activate the seal, hold it through the discharge as the accumulated fracture energy released. The discharge was the dangerous part, fifteen to thirty seconds of raw Underworld mana flooding outward before the closure was complete, each burst equivalent to a small Gate breach in terms of the creatures it attracted.

He extracted every creature that came through.

By the third night, his Register had reached 347 units and his Void Affinity had crossed 1,800 from the constant extraction activity and ambient absorption. Herald, speaking from his shadow as he walked between fracture points, noted that his trajectory would place him at S-rank equivalent combat output within two weeks even without further dungeon clearing, simply from the compound growth of his shadow army's aggregate power.

The last fracture point was in the basement of an Association auxiliary building.

He had been aware of the irony. Bael's scouts had chosen the location specifically because it was the one spot in the fracture ring where the Association's own mana interference, the equipment running in the building above, masked the fracture signature from standard detection. Only Void Sight found it.

He went in through the basement access, sealed the fracture, handled the three D-rank breach entities that came through during the discharge, and was back on the street in forty minutes.

The ring was closed. The city's mana field began, slowly, to restabilize.

Three days later, Director Voss called another meeting.

This one was not in Conference Room 7. It was in Voss's private office on the top floor of Association Headquarters, and the summons was not a letter. It was a phone call from Voss directly, at seven in the morning, and his voice had the quality of a man who had been awake all night and was not happy about it.

"Hunter Morrow," he said without preamble. "In the last two weeks, eight registered Gate fracture points have been sealed by an unknown party using a Void-type energy signature. The Sector 2 Class S formation has been cleared. And three Seventh Layer scout entities that our monitoring equipment had been tracking, entities that we had specifically not engaged because disturbing them might have accelerated the timeline, have vanished from detection."

"Good morning, Director," Liu Yun said.

Silence.

"The fracture ring pattern," Voss said carefully, "was classified information at the highest level. The Sector 2 formation's contents were classified. The scout entities' presence was classified. Can you tell me how you were aware of these elements?"

"A source."

"What source?"

"A reliable one."

More silence.

"Come to my office," Voss said. "Today."

The top floor of Association Headquarters had a different quality than Conference Room 7, less institutional, more territory. Voss's desk was positioned to use the full panoramic window as a backdrop, Veramore spread behind him, the billboard of his own face visible a block away. The posturing of it was almost architectural.

Liu Yun sat across from him and did not perform discomfort.

Voss looked at him for a long time before speaking.

"I've been receiving intelligence," Voss said, "from three separate sources, that there is an entity operating in this city with a power classification that doesn't match anything in our taxonomy. Something that moves through dungeons without leaving conventional biological evidence, that seals Gate fractures using a method our equipment can't fully document, and that has cleared a Class S formation that should have required an international response team."

"And?" Liu Yun said.

"And the Void Resonance readings from all those locations, when our analysts overlaid them, match the signature from your assessment. An inverted-polarity output. Void-type." Voss leaned back. "You've been operating outside Association oversight."

"I've been operating within Hunter law," Liu Yun said. "Which gives me the right to enter Gates within my classification, use my abilities as I see fit, and operate on information gathered through my own means. Everything I've done is legal."

"Legal," Voss repeated. "And inadvisable. What you've stirred up"

"What I've sealed," Liu Yun said, "was a fracture ring that would have destabilized the city's mana field in sixty hours. What I've cleared was a Gate formation that your teams were watching fail in real time while they waited for authorization." He let that sit. "If you had the capability to handle it, you would have. You didn't. I did."

The silence this time was different, the silence of a powerful man recalibrating.

"What do you want?" Voss said finally. It was the most honest thing he had said in either of their meetings.

Liu Yun thought about the Oracle in the forest clearing. About Bael's Avatar, coming regardless of what anyone wanted. About the three months that had become closer to six weeks.

"Resources," he said. "When the Avatar arrives, and it is coming, you have my word on that, I will need to operate at scale. I need evacuation protocols for the affected sectors, Association response teams positioned to contain the aftermath, and clear air above the combat zone." He paused. "What I don't need is someone trying to manage or contain me during the operation itself. I work alone. That's non-negotiable."

Voss studied him.

"You're asking me to give a Void-type anomaly with an army I can't quantify a free operational hand in my city," he said.

"I'm asking you to accept that the alternative is Bael's Avatar unopposed," Liu Yun said.

A very long silence.

"I'll prepare the protocols," Voss said.
