Chapter 20 - Heat Beneath the Surface

The tension in Beacon Hills had officially broken.

What was once hidden—

Was now surfacing.

Beacon Hills High School – Nurse's Office

The unconscious student lay on the bed, pale and barely breathing.

Doctors hadn't arrived yet.

Too slow.

Too unaware.

Standing nearby—

Scott McCall paced anxiously.

"This is bad… this is really bad…"

Stiles nodded.

"Yeah, people collapsing in school? Definitely bad."

Near the door—

Aiden Blackwell stood silently.

Watching.

Thinking.

Calculating.

The scent of wolfsbane still lingered.

Strong.

Deliberate.

"They're testing limits," Aiden muttered.

Scott turned.

"What?"

Aiden didn't look at him.

"The hunters."

A pause.

"They're pushing boundaries to see how far they can go."

Scott clenched his fists.

"This is because of me."

Aiden's eyes sharpened.

"I already told you—no."

Scott frowned.

"Then why target someone at school?"

Aiden finally turned.

"To send a message."

Before Scott could respond—

The door opened.

Allison Argent stepped inside.

Followed closely by Lydia Martin.

Allison's eyes immediately went to the unconscious student.

"Is he going to be okay?"

Aiden answered calmly.

"If treated fast… yes."

Allison stepped closer to him.

Lowering her voice.

"This wasn't random, was it?"

Aiden met her gaze.

"No."

A pause.

Allison didn't step away this time.

Instead—

She moved closer.

Standing right beside him.

Scott noticed.

Stiles DEFINITELY noticed.

Stiles whispered—

"…Is it just me or is that happening?"

Scott whispered back—

"I think it's happening."

Meanwhile—

Lydia wasn't looking at the victim.

She was looking at Aiden.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Analyzing again.

But this time—

Something else mixed in.

A quiet pull.

Aiden exhaled slowly.

"Things are escalating faster…"

Suddenly—

A sharp sound echoed outside.

A scream.

Everyone froze.

Aiden moved first.

"Stay here."

But Allison grabbed his arm instantly.

"No."

Aiden looked down at her hand.

Then at her.

"I'm not staying behind again."

Her voice was firm.

Determined.

For a moment—

Aiden said nothing.

Then—

A faint smile.

"Stay close."

Allison nodded.

Behind them—

Lydia stepped forward too.

"I'm coming."

Scott blinked.

"What?! No, you're not—"

Lydia didn't even look at him.

"Yes. I am."

Stiles leaned toward Scott.

"…This is how people die."

Scott sighed.

"…Yeah."

School Hallway

The atmosphere had changed.

Students were panicking.

Running.

Whispering.

Aiden moved through the chaos like it didn't exist.

Focused.

Sharp.

Then—

He saw it.

Near the lockers—

A girl stood frozen.

Shaking.

In front of her—

A man.

Not normal.

Not human.

Yellow eyes.

Fangs slightly visible.

A Beta.

Scott whispered—

"…Another werewolf?"

Aiden's expression darkened.

"No."

A pause.

"He's being controlled."

The Beta growled.

Unstable.

Like Scott had been.

But worse.

Then—

He lunged.

FAST.

Aiden moved instantly.

He appeared between them—

Catching the Beta's attack mid-air.

The impact cracked the floor beneath his feet.

The Beta snarled—

Trying to break free.

Aiden's grip tightened.

Effortless.

"Calm down."

The Beta roared.

Completely out of control.

Scott stepped forward.

"We have to help him!"

Aiden didn't look back.

"I am."

Then—

His eyes ignited.

Hellfire flickered to life.

The air heated instantly.

The Beta froze.

His body trembling.

Instinct.

Fear.

Submission.

Aiden's voice dropped—

Commanding.

Absolute.

"Sleep."

The Beta collapsed instantly.

Unconscious.

Silence.

Scott stared.

"…Okay, that was insane."

Allison stood behind Aiden.

Closer than ever.

Her voice was quiet.

"…You didn't hurt him."

Aiden glanced back slightly.

"No."

Allison's gaze softened.

That mattered to her.

More than anything.

Across from them—

Lydia watched carefully.

Not the power.

Not the fight.

But Aiden himself.

And the way Allison looked at him.

Something unfamiliar twisted inside her.

Aiden smirked faintly.

"…Now that's new."

Scott walked up.

Looking at the unconscious Beta.

"So what now?"

Aiden's expression turned serious again.

"Now…"

A pause.

"We find out who's controlling them."

His eyes flickered with hellfire.

Because this—

Wasn't random.

This wasn't just hunters.

This was strategy.

And somewhere—

Hidden in the shadows—

Peter Hale smiled.

Because chaos…

Was exactly what he wanted.

And now—

Everyone was playing his game.
