Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 – The Fear of Losing What You Just Found

The day did not feel like it was moving.

It felt like it was… staying.

As if time itself had slowed down just to let two hearts understand something they were not ready to name.

---

Mira did not move her hand away.

It rested near Arlen's, close enough that she could feel the warmth without touching.

That small distance…

felt heavier than any touch.

She looked at their hands.

Then slowly, very slowly—

her fingers moved.

Not fully.

Just a little.

A quiet attempt.

A silent question.

Arlen noticed.

His breath became slightly uneven.

Not because of fear.

But because of the weight of that small moment.

He didn't move away.

He didn't move forward either.

He simply stayed.

Giving her the space to decide.

---

Their fingers finally touched.

Lightly.

Barely.

But enough.

Mira felt it first.

A soft warmth.

Not sudden.

Not shocking.

Just… right.

As if her hand had finally reached where it was meant to be.

Her heart began beating faster.

But she didn't pull away.

Arlen's fingers slowly responded.

Not grabbing.

Not holding tightly.

Just… staying there with hers.

Careful.

Gentle.

Like he was afraid—

that even this small moment might break.

---

No words were spoken.

Because words would have been too small.

Some feelings cannot be explained.

They can only be felt.

---

The sound of the stream filled the silence.

The wind moved softly.

The world continued.

But for them—

everything had stopped.

---

After a while, Mira spoke.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Is this… wrong?"

Arlen didn't answer immediately.

He looked at their hands.

Then at her.

"…Does it feel wrong?" he asked softly.

Mira shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"…It feels like I've been waiting for this."

Her words were simple.

But they carried something deep.

Something old.

Something that didn't belong only to this life.

---

Arlen felt something tighten inside his chest.

Not pain.

But something close to it.

A feeling that came with love—

and fear.

"…Then it's not wrong," he said quietly.

---

Mira looked at him.

Her eyes were softer now.

More open.

More honest.

"Then why does it scare me?"

Arlen's fingers gently tightened around hers.

Not forcefully.

Just enough to let her know—

he was there.

"Because…" he paused,

"…you don't want to lose it."

---

That answer stayed between them.

Heavy.

Real.

Mira lowered her gaze slightly.

"…I don't want to lose you."

The words came out before she could stop them.

And once they were spoken—

they couldn't be taken back.

---

Silence.

Deep.

Fragile.

Arlen didn't look away.

"…You won't," he said.

But even as he said it—

something inside him felt uncertain.

Not because he didn't mean it.

But because life…

was never that kind.

---

A sudden breeze passed through.

Stronger this time.

Colder.

Mira instinctively moved slightly closer.

Without thinking—

Arlen shifted too.

Their shoulders brushed.

And neither of them moved away.

---

That small closeness…

felt bigger than anything else.

---

Mira slowly leaned her head.

Not fully.

Just slightly—

until it rested gently against his shoulder.

Her breath was calm.

But her heart…

was not.

Arlen froze for a brief moment.

Not out of discomfort.

But because he didn't want to move wrong.

Didn't want to ruin this.

So he stayed still.

Careful.

Present.

---

After a few moments, he relaxed.

Just a little.

Enough to let her rest comfortably.

His eyes looked ahead—

but his thoughts were only about her.

---

"I don't understand this feeling," Mira whispered.

Her voice was soft against the silence.

"…But I don't want it to go away."

Arlen closed his eyes briefly.

"…Then we won't let it go."

---

The words sounded strong.

Like a promise.

But deep inside—

both of them knew.

Some promises are not broken by people.

They are broken by fate.

---

Time passed slowly.

Very slowly.

As if even the world didn't want to interrupt them.

---

But somewhere far away—

Darkness was moving.

Searching.

Getting closer.

---

Back at the stream—

Mira lifted her head slightly.

Reluctantly.

As if leaving that moment felt harder than anything.

"It's getting late," she said softly.

Arlen nodded.

But neither of them stood immediately.

Because both of them were waiting—

for the other to move first.

---

Finally, Mira gently pulled her hand away.

The warmth disappeared.

And suddenly—

the air felt colder.

Empty.

---

They stood up together.

But something had changed.

Something important.

Because now—

they both knew.

This wasn't just a meeting.

This wasn't just a connection.

---

This was something they could lose.

And that made it precious.

And terrifying.

---

As they began walking back—

Mira spoke again.

Quietly.

"Will you come tomorrow?"

Arlen didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

A pause.

"…Even if I try not to."

Mira smiled faintly.

"…Then don't try."

---

They stopped at the edge of the village.

The same place as before.

But this time—

leaving felt harder.

---

Neither of them said goodbye immediately.

Because goodbyes felt too final.

Too heavy.

---

Mira finally spoke.

"…Take care."

Arlen nodded.

"You too."

---

She turned first.

Walking slowly.

But after a few steps—

she stopped.

Turned back.

Just for a second.

Arlen was still there.

Looking at her.

---

Their eyes met one last time.

And in that silent moment—

both of them felt it clearly.

---

This was no longer just a beginning.

This was something they were already afraid to lose.

---

Love doesn't become strong when you find someone…

It becomes strong the moment you realize—

you cannot afford to lose them.
