Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Strangers, Not Strangers

The restaurant shimmered with quiet elegance.

Soft gold light spilled from crystal chandeliers, settling gently over polished tables and expensive glassware. A pianist played somewhere in the background, each note smooth and deliberate, like the evening itself had been carefully arranged to feel perfect.

Calm.Controlled.Normal.

Exactly what Aria needed.

Lucas pulled out her chair with an easy smile.

"Tonight," he said, "no overthinking."

Aria let out a soft breath and sat down.

"I'll try," she replied.

That was all she could promise.

For a while, it worked.

They ordered food, exchanged small jokes, talked about ordinary things—things that belonged to a life untouched by chaos.

Lucas leaned forward, resting his arms on the table, watching her with that familiar softness she had always trusted.

"You look better today," he said.

"Do I?"

"Yeah," he smiled. "Like you're finally back."

Back.

She nodded faintly.

"I guess I am."

But even as she said it—Something inside her resisted.

Her fingers traced the rim of her glass absentmindedly. The music felt distant. The voices around her blurred into background noise.

And then—Without knowing why—She looked up.

And everything stopped.

Rafael.

He stood across the room, near a private section, dressed in dark precision, surrounded by men who spoke to him in low, careful tones.

But none of that mattered.Because he wasn't listening to them.

He was looking at her.

The world shrank.

The music faded.

The light dimmed.

Just his eyes.On hers.

Aria's breath caught sharply in her throat. Her fingers tightened around the glass. She couldn't move.

Couldn't think.

Couldn't even look away.

It had been less than a day.

And yet—It felt like something had changed permanently.

Then—As suddenly as it happened—They both broke eye contact.

Like strangers.

Like nothing existed between them.

"Aria?"

Lucas's voice pulled her back. She blinked, forcing her gaze back to him.

"Hmm?"

"You okay?" he asked, studying her face. She nodded quickly.

"Yes. Just… distracted."

Lucas followed her earlier glance. His eyes scanned the room.

And then—Stopped.

Recognition lit up his expression.Interest followed immediately.

"Well… that's unexpected," he murmured.

Aria's heartbeat quickened.

"What?"

"That's Rafael," Lucas said, lowering his voice slightly. "You don't see someone like him here every day."

Aria forced her expression to stay neutral.

"I don't know him."The lie came easily.Too easily.

Lucas leaned back in his chair, watching Rafael with a different kind of focus now.

Sharp.

Intent.

Calculated.

"I do," he said quietly. "At least by reputation."

There was something in his tone she hadn't heard before.

Not warmth.

Not softness.

Something… colder.

"I should meet him."

Aria's head snapped up.

"No."

The word came out too quickly.Too firmly.Lucas frowned slightly.

"Why not?"

"You don't even know him," she said, trying to sound calm.

"That's exactly why I should," he replied, already pushing his chair back.

"Lucas—wait—"

But he was already walking. Each step he took felt heavier in Aria's chest. Her pulse quickened. Her thoughts tangled. This wasn't supposed to happen. Not like this. Not now.

Across the room—Rafael saw him coming.

Of course he did.

His gaze shifted slowly—From Aria…To the man approaching him.

Lucas stopped in front of him confidently.

"Mr. Rafael," he said, extending his hand. "I've heard a lot about you."

Rafael looked at him.

Calm.

Unreadable.

Dangerously still.

He shook his hand once.

"Rafael."

"I'm Lucas," he said with a smile. "I've been wanting to meet you."

"I know."

The response was simple. But something about it made Lucas pause.

Just for a second. Then he smiled it off.

Aria stood up. Her legs felt heavier than they should. Every step toward them felt like walking into something she couldn't control.

When she reached—

Rafael didn't look at her.

Not immediately.

As if she wasn't important.

As if she didn't exist.

Lucas turned to her, naturally pulling her closer to his side. His hand slipped into hers, fingers lacing together.

Warm.

Familiar.

Claiming.

"Rafael," Lucas said casually, "this is Aria… my girlfriend."The word echoed.

Louder than anything else in the room.

Girlfriend.

Rafael's gaze lifted slowly. And landed on her.

This time— It didn't look away. Aria felt the shift instantly.

The weight of his eyes.

The intensity behind them.

The way everything around them disappeared again.

Her fingers tightened slightly in Lucas's hand. Not because of him.

But because of Rafael.

Rafael's eyes dropped briefly— To their joined hands.

That small detail.

That single connection.

Something changed in his expression. So subtle no one else would notice. But it was there.

A flicker.

Dark.

Unsettled.

He looked back at her. And for a moment— It felt like he was seeing more than he should. More than she was ready to reveal.

"Nice to meet you," he said.

His voice calm.

Controlled.

Like nothing existed between them.

"Same," Aria replied.

Her voice steady. Even though her heart wasn't.

"Small world," Lucas added with a light laugh. But neither of them responded.

Because for them— This wasn't coincidence.

Lucas continued speaking, trying to build a connection, his tone easy, confident. Rafael responded when necessary.

Short answers.

Measured words.

Nothing unnecessary.

But his attention—It didn't stay on Lucas. It kept returning to her.

Every few seconds—

His gaze drifted back.

Unconsciously.

Inevitably.

And Aria— She felt it every time.

She tried not to look.

Tried to focus on anything else.

On Lucas's voice.

On the room.

On the music.

But something kept pulling her back.

And when their eyes met again— It was worse.

Because now—

It wasn't surprise.

It wasn't confusion.

It was awareness.

Of everything they weren't saying.

She looked away quickly, but it didn't help. Because she could still feel it.

His gaze.

Lingering.

Burning.

Lucas laughed at something, completely unaware.

Still talking.

Still trying to impress.

But Aria wasn't listening anymore.

Because across the room, even when Rafael turned away, Even when he spoke to others—His presence stayed with her.

And when he looked back again—

She was already looking at him.

Like they were caught in something neither of them could stop.

Eventually, Lucas stepped back.

"Good meeting you," he said.

Rafael gave a slight nod. Aria didn't say anything.

Couldn't.

Because if she spoke—

She wasn't sure what would come out.

Lucas led her back to the table. His hand still holding hers.

But now— It felt different.

Because even as she sat down—

Even as Lucas continued talking—

Even as the night went on—

Her attention stayed somewhere else.

Across the room.

Rafael had returned to his meeting.

Standing.

Speaking.

Commanding.

But every now and then—

His eyes found her again.

Like they couldn't stay away.

And hers—

Did the same.

No words.

No acknowledgment.

No permission.

Just—

Something.

Unfinished.

Unspoken.

Unavoidable.

The distance between them didn't matter. The people didn't matter.

The situation didn't matter. Because something had already shifted.

Something that couldn't be undone. And that night,in a room full of people, noise, and light—

Two strangers sat in separate worlds, pretending they didn't know each other.

While their eyes refused to forget.
