Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Lies in the Dark

Night fell differently in Rafael's world.

It wasn't soft.

It wasn't peaceful.

It was alive.

The bar pulsed with dim lights and quiet danger.

Music hummed low, glasses clinked, and beneath the surface of luxury. Money, power, and secrets moved like shadows.

This wasn't just a bar. It was his territory. A place where nothing stayed hidden for long. Rafael stepped inside and everything shifted.

Conversations lowered.

Movements sharpened.

Eyes followed—but never too openly.

Respect.

Fear.

Control.

He walked past the main floor without stopping. Toward the deeper section. Where the real games were played.

Cards, Chips, Risk, Greed.

His gaze moved across the room, scanning without effort. And then—

It stopped.

Lucas.

Sitting at a table. Leaning forward. Too focused and desperate.

Rafael's eyes narrowed slightly. Not because Lucas was there but because of how he was there.

The man from the restaurant.

The one who held her hand like he deserved to.

The one who called her—

"my girlfriend."

Rafael didn't move closer immediately. He simply watched with silent and observing eyes.

Lucas lost a hand. His jaw tightened. He laughed it off casually, but his fingers tapped restlessly against the table.

Another round.

More money, more risk.

Rafael already understood.

A gambler.

Reckless.

Predictable.

Weak in the ways that mattered.

A faint, cold thought crossed his mind.

And she trusts him.

He turned slightly, about to walk away, when a voice stopped him.

"Lucas, you're going to lose everything at this rate."

A woman's voice.

Soft. Familiar. Too close.

Rafael's gaze shifted.

A woman leaned beside Lucas.

Comfortable, Too comfortable.

Lucas smirked.

"Relax," he said, lowering his voice. "I've got a backup." The woman raised an eyebrow.

"That girlfriend of yours?" Rafael stilled.

Lucas chuckled.

"Yeah. She'll give me money if I ask. She always does."

Silence.

Sharp.

Rafael didn't move. Didn't react. But something in him—Shifted.

"She trusts me too much," Lucas added casually. "Makes things easy."

The woman laughed softly.

"And you feel nothing?"

Lucas shrugged.

"Why should I? It's useful." Rafael's jaw tightened.

Images flashed— Aria's hands, careful and gentle.

Her voice, steady despite fear.

The way she stayed.

The way she cared.

And this man—

"Just don't get caught," the woman said lightly.

Lucas smirked.

"I won't. She believes whatever I say." That was enough. Rafael turned away.

Slowly.

Calmly.

But his eyes— Had gone cold.

He walked toward the private section, his steps measured. Controlled.

"Boss," one of his men approached. "Everything alright?"

Rafael didn't answer immediately.

His gaze flickered once , Back toward Lucas.

Then away.

"Keep an eye on him," he said quietly. The man nodded instantly.

"Understood."

Rafael stepped inside his private room. The door closed behind him.

Silence.

For a moment— He said nothing.

Did nothing.

Then his hand moved, Running slowly across his jaw.

A rare sign of thought of irritation.

"She trusts him," he murmured.

The words didn't sit well, not at all.

Because now he knew.

The man she chose.

The man she believed in.

The man she defended was nothing more than a liar and for some reason that mattered. More than it should.

Rafael leaned back slightly, exhaling. His mind wasn't on business anymore.

Not on power. Not on control. It was on her.

The way she looked at Lucas, the way she held onto him.

The way she said— "I have someone."A faint, dangerous thought formed.

Not for long.

His eyes darkened.

Not with anger.

Not with jealousy.

With certainty.

Because Rafael didn't interfere in things unnecessarily.

Didn't involve himself in personal matters. But this—This wasn't just personal anymore. It was wrong and Rafael didn't ignore things like that. Not when it stood right in front of him. Not when it involved her and now he wasn't going to let her stay blind in it.

Rafael didn't sleep that night.

Not because he couldn't but because his mind refused to let him.

The city outside his window was silent, resting under dim lights and fading noise but inside everything was sharp, clear, unsettled. He stood near the glass, his reflection staring back at him.

Unchanged.

Controlled.

Unbothered.

At least that's how it should have been. But the words echoed again.

"She gives me money whenever I ask."

"She trusts me too much."

"She believes everything I say."

Rafael's jaw tightened. It wasn't just the lies. It wasn't just the betrayal. It was her.

The way she didn't hesitate to help.

The way she stayed with him in the rain.

The way she chose someone like that without knowing.

"She doesn't see it," he murmured.

And that—

Didn't sit right with him.

Because Rafael had spent his life seeing everything clearly.

People.

Intentions.

Weakness.

And Lucas was predictable,transparent.

But Aria wasn't.

She trusted without calculation. Gave without expecting. Stayed without questioning.

And now—

She was standing on something that was already breaking. Rafael exhaled slowly, his fingers brushing the edge of the table. He didn't interfere. Didn't fix things that weren't his responsibility.

But this—

This felt different.

Not because of Lucas.

But because of her.

A quiet knock broke the silence.

"Boss."

Rafael didn't turn.

"Speak."

"We've been watching him," the man said. "He's in debt. More than he lets on."

Rafael's eyes darkened slightly.

"How much?"

"Enough to make him desperate."

Of course.

"And the girl?" Rafael asked.

A brief pause.

"She's been transferring money to him regularly."

Rafael closed his eyes for a second. Not in surprise.Just in confirmation.

"She doesn't know," the man added.

No.

She didn't.

"Keep watching," Rafael said quietly.

"Understood."

The door closed again.Silence returned.

But this time—

It felt heavier.

Rafael walked back to his desk, resting his hands against it, his gaze unfocused.

He could ignore it. Walk away. Let her learn the truth on her own.

That's what he should do.

But then—

A memory surfaced again.

Her voice.

Soft, but firm.

"Stay awake."

Her hands pressing against his wound. Her presence refusing to leave.

She didn't walk away from him.Even when she had every reason to.

Rafael let out a quiet breath.

"Damn it," he muttered.

Because now—

He couldn't walk away either.

Not from this.

Not from her.

Meanwhile…

Aria stood behind the café counter, trying to focus.Trying to move normally.Trying to think about anything other than everything.

The bell above the door rang. She didn't look up immediately.

Didn't want to.

"Aria."

She froze.

Lucas.

She looked up slowly.

And there he was.

Smiling.

Like nothing in the world was wrong.

"Hey," he said, walking toward her.

"Hey," she replied softly.

"You didn't text me this morning," he added.

"I was busy." A lie, but easier than the truth.

Lucas leaned against the counter casually.

"I missed you."

Her heart softened slightly.

Or maybe—

She wanted it to.

"I saw you last night," he continued. "You seemed… distracted."

For a second her mind flashed back.

The restaurant.

The silence.

The way her eyes kept finding someone they shouldn't.

"I was just tired," she said.

Lucas studied her. Then smiled. That same familiar smile.

"Don't overthink," he said gently. "You always do that."

She nodded.

Because that was easier.

"Come out tonight," he added. "Just us again."

Aria hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then nodded.

"Okay."

Because this—

This was what she was supposed to choose.

Not confusion.

Not danger.

Not something she didn't understand. Even as she agreed, something inside her didn't feel settled.

Because somewhere in the city there was a man who now knew the truth she didn't.

And he wasn't the kind of man who ignored things like that.

That night two decisions were being made.

One— By a girl who chose trust over doubt.

And the other— By a man who had already seen the truth.

And when those two choices finally collided nothing would stay the same.
