Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Commander’s Baptism

The gate for "Operation: Black Glass" was located in the sublevels of an abandoned subway station. Unlike the chaotic, jagged rips in space of illegal gates, this one was stabilized by Association tech—a shimmering, controlled oval of deep azure.

Kai stood at the threshold, wearing a new, lightweight tactical suit provided by Han. It was matte black, designed to dampen mana emissions.

"Remember," Han's voice crackled through a small earpiece. "This is a C-Rank Hive-type dungeon. The Association records show a 40% casualty rate for standard teams here. You are going in alone. If you die, I'll scrub your name from the system. You were never here."

"Generous as always, Director," Kai muttered.

He stepped through.

The transition was silent. He emerged into a sprawling underground forest of glowing fungi and petrified trees. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and rotting vegetation.

> [Current Location: The Mycelium Labyrinth]

> [Rank: C]

> [Objective: Exterminate the Spore-Walker Colony]

Kai didn't move. He closed his eyes, letting his Predator Instinct expand.

Twelve signatures... thirty meters ahead. Small, fast. Moving in a flanking pattern.

In the past, Kai would have gripped his dagger and waited in terror. Now, he simply looked at his own shadow.

"Come out," he commanded.

The ground beneath him rippled. From the darkness, the Iron-Hide Weaver emerged. It was no longer a mess of rusted rebar and flesh; in its shadow form, it was a sleek, terrifying engine of war made of midnight-violet smoke and hardened ethereal plates.

"Scout," Kai ordered.

The Weaver didn't make a sound as its eight bladed legs propelled it into the fungal canopy. A few seconds later, a series of wet, muffled screeches echoed through the trees.

> [Target Silenced]

> [Experience Gained]

> [Shadow Potential Detected...]

Kai walked forward, his hands in his pockets. He wasn't just a hunter; he was a General. As he moved deeper, the "Spore-Walkers"—humanoid creatures with fungal growths instead of faces—burst from the floor.

They were C-Rank, significantly stronger than the beetles from the Bone-Yard. One lunged at Kai, its clawed hand glowing with a toxic green aura.

Kai didn't flinch. He didn't even draw his weapon.

The Weaver dropped from the ceiling like a guillotine. It impaled two Spore-Walkers simultaneously, its shadow-cables lashing out to snap the necks of three others.

But then, the ground shook.

A massive, bloated version of the walkers—a Fungal Juggernaut—smashed through the petrified trees. It was twice the size of the others, its skin pulsing with explosive spores. It roared, a sound that released a cloud of paralyzing gas.

The Weaver hissed, its shadow form flickering as the toxic gas interfered with its mana structure.

"Retract," Kai commanded. The Weaver vanished back into his shadow.

Kai drew his dagger—the one he'd spent his last credits to have silver-coated. He felt the cold pressure of the Abyss rising in his throat.

My shadows are tools, but they aren't 'Me', Kai thought, his eyes turning a predatory violet. If I rely on them too much, I'll stop growing.

The Juggernaut swung a massive, club-like arm. Kai dived forward, not away. He rolled beneath the creature's guard, the paralyzing gas swirling around him.

> [Abyss Passive: Toxic Resistance (Low) Activated]

> [Abyss Level: 3.1%]

The gas stung his lungs, but the Abyss within him consumed the toxins before they could reach his nervous system. Kai leapt up, driving his dagger into the Juggernaut's knee.

The creature roared, its spore-sacks beginning to glow—a sign of an impending explosion.

"Not today."

Kai grabbed the creature's arm. Instead of pulling away, he pushed his mana into the monster.

"Devour."

The black ink didn't just consume the monster; it fed on the explosion itself. The glowing spores were sucked into Kai's palm, the light vanishing into the void. The Juggernaut shriveled instantly, turning into a husk of dried mushrooms.

> [Level Up: 7 → 9]

> [Quest Progress: 15/100 Extractions]

Kai stood over the remains, his heart racing. He could feel his Strength and Agility clicking into a new tier. He looked up at the ceiling of the dungeon.

"I'm coming for that A-Rank," he whispered.

Far away, in the surveillance room of the Association, Director Han watched a screen that showed only static and distorted shadows where Kai should have been.

"What are you, Kai Draven?" Han whispered to the empty room.
