Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Weight of a Warlord

The Ogre Warlord didn't roar. He didn't need to. As his massive iron-shod boots hit the permafrost, a ripple of pure, oppressive mana rolled across the clearing. The air grew heavy, thick with the smell of old iron and dried gore. Kai's knees buckled instinctively. This wasn't just strength; it was the Presence of a B-Rank peak monster.

Kai ground his teeth, his jaw aching from the pressure. "Titan... Skitter... front and center."

The shadows pooled. Titan rose, but the Shadow Ogre was trembling, its smoky form bowed under the Warlord's superior rank. Skitter, the Weaver, hissed and flattened its legs against the ice. They were terrified.

"Cowards," Kai hissed, though his own heart was drumming a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

The Warlord moved.

For a creature of that size, he was impossibly fast. He didn't swing his spiked mace; he thrust it like a spear. The air screamed as the weapon broke the sound barrier.

"Titan! Block!"

The Shadow Ogre threw its massive arms up, manifesting a shield of solidified darkness. The mace struck.

CRUNCH.

The sound wasn't metal on stone; it was the sound of a soul shattering. Titan's shadow-form didn't just break; it dissipated instantly into black mist, the feedback sending Kai reeling backward, blood spraying from his nose.

"One hit..." Kai gasped, wiping the red smear from his face. "He took out my tank in one hit."

The Warlord retracted his mace, the spikes dripping with shadow residue. "Weak," the monster rumbled. Its voice sounded like tectonic plates grinding together.

The Warlord swung again—a massive, horizontal sweep meant to level the entire clearing.

Kai didn't dodge back; there was nowhere to go. He dived forward, sliding through the Warlord's legs. The mace whistled over him, catching the granite spire Kai had been leaning against. The three-ton pillar of rock didn't just break—it turned to powder.

As Kai slid, he slashed upward with his dagger, aiming for the Warlord's Achilles tendon.

Ting.

The blade struck the rusted greave covering the Warlord's leg and snapped. The tip of the silver-coated steel flew into the snow.

Kai froze. His only weapon was gone.

The Warlord looked down, a slow, cruel grin spreading across his tusks. He raised a massive, gauntleted foot and brought it down. Kai rolled, the stomp creating a crater that sent him flying five meters into a snowbank.

His vision went white. His ribs, already cracked from the Vanguards, finally gave way. He could feel the jagged edge of bone poking against his lung.

I'm going to die.

The thought was cold and clear. He was Level 12. The Warlord was a high-tier Boss. The gap was too wide.

The Warlord walked toward him, dragging the mace through the ice, carving a deep trench. Skritch. Skritch. Skritch. The sound of the reaper's scythe.

"Minae..." Kai whispered.

The Abyss in his chest didn't just stir; it screamed. It wasn't the sound of a system; it was the sound of a black hole that refused to be empty.

The Warlord raised his mace for the final blow. "Die... shadow-thing."

"No," Kai rasped.

He didn't reach for a weapon. He reached for the air.

As the mace descended, Kai's right hand turned pitch black, the skin replaced by a swirling, hungry void. He didn't dodge. He caught the mace.

The impact should have turned Kai's arm into jelly. Instead, the mace stopped dead in mid-air. The black energy around Kai's hand began to eat the iron of the weapon, the spikes melting into liquid shadow and being absorbed into Kai's skin.

The Warlord's eyes widened. For the first time, the monster felt a chill.

"My turn," Kai said.

Using the Void Grip, Kai jerked the mace toward him. The Warlord, caught off guard by the sheer mechanical force of the Abyss, stumbled forward.

Kai lunged. He didn't have a knife, so he used his fingers. His black-clad hand punched through the Warlord's rusted chest plate as if it were wet paper. He sank his hand deep into the monster's chest, grabbing the massive, pulsing heart.

The Warlord let out a sound that wasn't a roar—it was a whimper.

"Devour," Kai commanded.

The darkness erupted. It flowed from Kai's arm into the Warlord's body, turning the creature's veins black. The Warlord's muscles began to wither in seconds, his life force, his mana, and his very soul being sucked through Kai's arm like water through a straw.

Kai stood there, his hand buried in the chest of the dying King, as the Warlord turned to grey ash. The wind caught the remains, scattering the "Iron Mountain's" ruler into the blizzard.

Kai stood alone. He was covered in black soot, his eyes glowing a stable, terrifying violet. He looked at his hand—the skin was back to normal, but it felt... different. Denser.

Kai looked at the empty peak. He didn't feel like a hero. He felt like a predator that had just cleared its territory.

He looked at the shadow at his feet. "Rise," he whispered.

A shadow began to grow, larger and more jagged than any before it. The Warlord rose from the ground, his rusted armor now sleek obsidian, his mace a pillar of darkness. He knelt before Kai, the peak of the mountain cracking under the weight of his loyalty.

"Next stop," Kai said, looking toward the south where the Desert Canyons lay. "A-Rank."
