The white bird flapped harder, wings slicing through the thin air between floating islands. Luna clung to Ron's arm, heart pounding. Kenta held on tight to her other hand, his face a mix of excitement and panic.
The sky had shifted again. Shadows streaked across the stars. The petals surrounding them, dark and black, multiplied. They swirled with purpose, twisting like knives in the wind.
"Hold on!" Ron shouted, gripping the reins. "They're not random. They're hunting us!"
Luna's stomach lurched. One black petal darted closer than the rest. It hovered just a centimeter from her face, its edges flickering like fire. She froze.
Kenta shouted, "Not again!"
Before Luna could scream, a silver flash cut through the air. The black petal exploded into tiny fragments, scattering like dust. A strong wind followed, blowing away every attacking petal, leaving silence behind. The sky seemed to hold its breath.
Luna blinked. Her heart raced. She turned toward the source. Above them, on a floating rock platform bathed in starlight, a figure hovered.
Clad in ancient clothes, the figure looked regal yet worn. A long dark robe flowed with golden embroidery along the edges, patterns resembling twisting vines and celestial symbols. A thick belt held a curved dagger at his side. His boots were tall, made of dark leather, and his long hair fluttered with the wind like ink in water. Over his shoulders, a light cloak shimmered faintly, catching the starlight.
He raised a hand, and the wind seemed to answer him.
"Oyee! You outsiders!" The voice was sharp, commanding.
Luna froze. The words echoed in her ears like a bell. She recognized that voice instantly. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.
"K-Kai?" she whispered, disbelief cracking her voice.
The figure's eyes glowed faintly. Luna's chest tightened. It was not her Kai. This one was harsher, sharper. He looked like Kai, but fiercer, as if someone had taken her friend and sharpened every corner of him. His gaze pierced her like steel.
"Yes," he said slowly. "You heard me. Outsiders. How did you trespass into the Bakula sky?"
Luna's heart raced. "I… I think you're… Kai? But… you're not him. Not Kai?"
He tilted his head. A faint smirk appeared, but it was cold. "I am Kai, yes. But not the one you know. I am Prince Kai of the Bakula Village. And you… you are trespassing into lands that have rules unknown to your world."
Ron spoke first, calm but sharp. "We didn't mean to. We… we followed a portal. We don't belong here."
The prince studied them for a moment, his gaze flicking over each of them. "Portal… yes. That explains the disturbances. It has been long since the bench brought newcomers here. You carry traces of the old world, yet your energy is strange."
Kenta flopped slightly forward, pointing dramatically. "Wait, wait. So this isn't my Kai friend? He's like… alternate-universe Kai? Prince Kai? Dude, I feel like I missed the backstory memo!"
Ron didn't even flinch at Kenta's theatrics. His calm eyes stayed fixed on Prince Kai. "Explain," he said simply.
Prince Kai nodded. "You arrived through the portal. Your kind is rare. The bench is one of the few tubes left between worlds. Each arrival brings a ripple through the skies. That is why the shadows came. The petals… they are guardians of the sky. They react to intrusion."
Luna swallowed hard. "The black petals… they attacked us. They wanted to… kill us?"
Prince Kai shook his head. "Not to kill. To test. To ward off uncontrolled intrusions. The petals sensed imbalance. You are not native. And yet… you survived."
Luna's hands shook. "We didn't know… we just… followed the bench."
Prince Kai's eyes softened slightly, though his voice stayed firm. "I see. That explains the timing. I will not stop you, but you must understand, the skies are dangerous. You are not prepared."
Kenta's arms flailed. "Dangerous? We survived flying fish, sand monsters, cloud bridges, and now black petals. Tell me again how we're unprepared!"
Ron ignored Kenta. He turned to Luna. "We need to listen. There's a pattern to the danger here. It's not random."
Prince Kai held out a hand. The wind answered him instantly. Floating debris twisted in spirals around him. He gestured, and the scattered petals that had fallen rose slightly, forming a faint pattern in the air.
"You see," he said, voice still sharp, "even the guardians have order. You cannot leave without understanding it. You will be hunted again if you move carelessly."
Luna blinked. "Hunted… again? By them?" She gestured at the fading shadows of petals.
Kai nodded. "Yes. The energy of your presence will continue to attract guardians. You survived this attack only by chance. I intervened to prevent death, not to offer welcome."
Kenta groaned dramatically. "And I thought the bird ride was the worst part. So these petals are like… fantasy monsters? Crazy world… I love it!"
Prince Kai's gaze shifted to Kenta, unamused. "You done?"
Ron stepped forward slightly, calm but commanding. "Prince Kai. We are not here to fight. We just want to understand this place. And… we want to find the portal. We need to return home."
Kai's eyes narrowed. "Return home… You do not understand. That portal is tied to the energy of this world. It is not something you can simply walk through again. You arrived here because of the alignment, the bench, and the conditions that must repeat exactly. Otherwise… you cannot leave."
Luna felt her chest tighten. "So… we might not get back?"
Kai shook his head slowly. "Not yet. Not without guidance. And even guidance carries risks. The sky will test you, the guardians will react. It is not a world built for your kind."
Ron exhaled quietly. "Then we need a plan. Tell us what to do. Help us navigate safely."
Prince Kai studied them. His robes fluttered in the wind, golden embroidery glinting. "First, you must learn to read the signs. The petals, the floating islands, the energy flows… these are all connected. The bench is not merely a portal. It is a node, a bridge that reacts to intent and harmony."
Kenta tilted his head. "Intent and harmony… That sounds like every fantasy anime ever. And step one would be…?"
Kai's eyes flicked toward Luna. "Step one is observation. You must watch. See how the winds move. See how the islands shift. See how the petals react to you. The portal will not appear unless you are in tune. Any attempt to force it will trigger more guardians."
Luna swallowed hard, but Ron gave her a steady glance. His calm energy grounded her. "We can do that." he said.
Kai's gaze softened ever so slightly. "You may learn quickly… if you survive the coming days."
Kenta flopped dramatically on the bird again. "Coming days? Already loving the urgency!"
Ron shot him a look. "Focus, Kenta."
The white bird banked sharply, gliding over a wide chasm. Luna's stomach lurched as they passed a floating island with jagged ruins.
"Watch the petals," Ron said quietly. "They react to proximity, energy, and fear. They aren't random."
Luna squinted at the island below. Black petals had reappeared at the edges, hovering like dark waves. She noticed something faint, a glow beneath the ruins. A tiny pulse that reminded her of the portal's light back in the park.
"Do you see that?" she asked Ron.
He nodded. "Yes. That's a minor energy node. Not the portal, but a clue. Everything in this world leaves a trace."
Kenta leaned forward, squinting. "Trace… got it! Like breadcrumbs for heroic adventurers. Love it!"
Prince Kai's eyes followed them. "Careful. The guardians adapt. Every trace you follow, every step you take, changes the balance. You are not playing in your world anymore."
Ron gripped the reins tighter. "We understand. We have to move carefully. Step by step."
Luna's thoughts turned to home. The camera. The park. The bench. She clenched her fists. "We'll follow the traces. We'll find the portal."
Prince Kai studied her. "You may. But this is a harsh world. What you call survival is just the beginning. Only understanding will allow movement toward your goal."
A gust of wind shifted. Petals twisted around them again, dark and faintly threatening. Luna instinctively reached out, but the petals hesitated. Almost like sensing Prince Kai's presence.
"Observe the patterns," Kai instructed. "Note the anomalies. Learn. Then act."
Ron looked at Luna and Kenta. "We stick together. We watch. We survive."
Kenta raised a hand dramatically. "Together forever! Also… heroic snacks still apply, right?"
Ron rolled his eyes but said nothing.
The bird flapped its massive wings, carrying them higher into the drifting islands. Luna's gaze moved constantly - glowing nodes, shifting petals, floating rocks, bridges that might crumble. Every second demanded attention.
Prince Kai floated above them, a silent guide. His presence was stern but steady. Every movement of the petals seemed to respond to him, forming faint paths through the islands, but he didn't touch them. They all had to learn on their own.
Luna noticed a dark rift in the sky to their left, petals swirling like a funnel. A small island beneath it glowed faintly. Her pulse raced. Could it be a clue? She glanced at Ron.
"That rift… it's different," she said quietly.
Prince Kai nodded. "Yes. Nodes like that are unstable. Approach carefully. Guardians may react."
Kenta's arms flailed. "Approach carefully… got it! Anime, cautious approach! My specialty!"
Prince Kai's eyes softened slightly, but his voice was still firm. "You are novices. Every movement will teach. You will not return home today, nor tomorrow. But knowledge will pave the path."
Luna swallowed, trying to steady her nerves. She felt small against the infinite sky, the floating islands, the guardians, and the prince. Yet, for the first time, she felt like someone here understood the rules.
Ron's eyes met her. "Watch. Learn. We'll survive. And one day, we'll find our way back."
The black petals stirred again, more aggressive this time, but the strong wind around Prince Kai held them at bay.
The journey had only just begun, and the world above the floating islands was alive, dangerous, and breathtaking. Luna realized that surviving wasn't enough. To get home, they had to understand this world, think like it, move with it.
She clenched her fists. "Step one," she whispered, "observe."
And somewhere, far above the drifting ruins, the faint glow of the portal pulsed like a heartbeat, promising a future they had yet to reach.
