Chapter 9 - Chapter 8 – The Children Who Chase Voices.

The village felt older now.

The stones beneath their feet were rough, uneven, and slick with something that should not have been there. It looked wet, but when Luna stepped on it, it felt dry. Wrong.

The shadows stretched too far, bending along walls like they were alive.

Luna took a slow breath.

The whispers were back.

Not distant this time.

Closer.

Surrounding them.

"…Luna…"

"…Don't leave…"

"…Play with me…"

Her chest tightened. She stumbled slightly, catching herself against a crumbling wall. The voices were coming from everywhere, even places where nothing existed.

Ron's hand tightened on her shoulder."Stay close. Focus. They want panic. Don't give it to them."

Kenta's breathing became uneven. His shoulders trembled."I… I can't… I hear everything… it's everywhere…"

"You can," Luna said softly, even though her own voice felt weak. "We're still here."

The whispers twisted her words, echoing them back in broken fragments.

"…still here…"

"…still… here…"

A small figure appeared at the end of the alley.

It ran toward them.

A child.

Long tangled hair. Pale skin. Eyes too wide.

Its shadow dragged behind it unnaturally.

"Come… play…" it said, voice soft and innocent.

Luna froze.

Ron stepped forward, placing himself between her and the child."Not today. Keep moving."

The child stopped.

Its head tilted slowly.

Its mouth began moving too fast, forming words that made no sense.

The whispers exploded around them.

Screaming. Singing. Crying. Begging.

Kenta's voice cracked."I… I can't hear straight…"

Before he could collapse, a firm hand grabbed his arm.

Prince Kai.

"Then stop trying to hear," Kai said calmly. "Walk."

There was no hesitation in his voice.

Kenta nodded weakly.

They moved forward.

The alley opened into a wider street.

The buildings leaned inward, as if watching.

Black and silver petals drifted near the rooftops, moving in slow, unnatural patterns.

"Look," Ron whispered.

Figures stood at the far end.

Children.

Or something pretending to be children.

Their faces were blurred. Their eyes glowed faintly. Their mouths moved in silence.

Kenta swallowed hard."I don't want to see this…"

"Keep your eyes open," Ron said. "But don't focus."

"…Luna…"

"…Come…"

"…Play…"

The voices called again.

Her legs felt heavy.

For a moment, she wanted to answer.

But she remembered Kai's words.

Don't listen.

Kenta's hand shook violently."I… I'm done… I can't…"

Luna grabbed his arm."You have to. Just one step. Then another."

They walked.

Every footstep echoed.

Sometimes the echo did not match.

Sometimes it came from the walls.

A door creaked open to their left.

A child stepped out, holding something small and black in its hands.

It moved.

"…Take me…" the child whispered.

Luna's chest pulsed.

The energy inside her reacted.

The whispers grew louder.

"Ignore it," Prince Kai said.

Another figure appeared above them.

A child standing on the rooftop, arms stretched outward.

"…Lost… lost… lost…"

Kenta's voice broke."I'm losing it…"

"Hold onto me," Luna said. "Just don't respond."

Suddenly, one of the rooftop figures dropped.

Fast.

Too fast.

It lunged straight toward Kenta.

Before it could reach him, Prince Kai moved.

In one clean motion, he stepped forward and raised his hand.

The air around him shifted.

A sharp pulse spread outward.

The figure froze mid-air.

For a second, it looked like glass.

Then it shattered into fragments of black petals.

Silence hit them for a moment.

Kenta stared, shaking."…What… was that…"

Kai lowered his hand."Not real. Just reflections given form."

The whispers slowly returned.

"Keep moving," he said.

The street twisted.

Corners appeared where there should have been none.

Windows flickered with faces that vanished when looked at directly.

Luna felt her head spin.

"…Luna…"

This time, the voice sounded exactly like her own.

She stumbled.

Ron caught her arm."Not you. Just echoes."

A black petal floated in front of her.

It twitched.

Ron brushed it aside.

It shattered instantly.

The whispers dipped again.

They reached an open square.

Pale silver light fell across the ground.

Petals spun in a slow vortex at the center.

Shadows moved along the walls.

Figures stood all around them.

Watching.

A child stepped forward.

"…Come… play… forever…"

Luna froze.

The voice felt… familiar.

For a moment, she almost answered.

"Don't!" Ron shouted.

The sound echoed unnaturally.

Everything paused.

Kenta dropped to his knees."I… can't…"

Luna pulled him up."You can. Don't stop now."

At the far end of the square, a building glowed faintly.

Silver light leaked through its cracks.

"That way," Ron said quietly.

The whispers changed.

Now they sounded like them.

Kenta.

Ron.

Luna.

Their own thoughts.

Their own fears.

Kenta froze."…That's… me…"

"And you're still here," Ron said. "That matters more."

They reached the building.

The door creaked open slowly.

Inside, the air felt different.

Still.

The petals floated gently.

The shadows no longer attacked.

They watched.

Luna swallowed."What is this place?"

Prince Kai's voice came from behind them.

"This is where they gather. The lost. The echoes. You are safe… for now."

They stepped further inside.

Then suddenly

Everything stopped.

The whispers vanished.

The petals froze.

The shadows stilled.

Silence.

Heavy.

Unnatural.

In the far corner, something moved.

A small figure stepped forward.

A child.

Pale.

Still.

Holding a single black petal.

Luna's heart pounded."…Don't…"

The child tilted its head.

Kenta's voice trembled.

"…It knows us…"

The petal lifted slowly.

The glow flickered.

The whispers returned.

Louder.

Closer.

"We're not going home yet," Luna whispered.

Ron's expression hardened."This is worse than I thought."

The child raised the petal higher.

The shadows leaned in.

The whispers grew into a storm.
