The whispers did not just return.
They pressed in.
Closer than before.
"…Stay…"
"…Don't go…"
"…You came back…"
The child stood in the corner, still holding the black petal.
Its fingers were too thin.
Too still.
The glow of the room flickered again, like it was breathing with the child.
Luna did not move.
Her chest felt tight.
"Don't respond," Ron said quietly. His voice was controlled, but his eyes stayed locked on the figure.
Kenta swallowed hard. His grip tightened around Luna's sleeve.
"It's looking at us…" he whispered.
It was.
Not just looking.
Watching.
Learning.
The child tilted its head slightly.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Then it took a step forward.
The sound of its foot touching the ground echoed too loudly for such a small movement.
The whispers shifted.
"…Closer…"
"…Stay with us…"
"…You remember…"
Luna's breath caught.
Remember.
That word felt heavier than the rest.
Prince Kai stepped forward, just enough to place himself slightly ahead of them.
"Do not engage," he said. "This is not an attack. Not yet."
The child's gaze flicked to him.
For a moment, the glow in its eyes sharpened.
Then it raised the black petal a little higher.
The air changed.
The shadows along the walls stretched toward it, like they were being pulled.
The petals in the room began to move again.
Slow at first.
Then faster.
A quiet spiral formed around the child.
Kenta's voice shook."I don't like this… I don't like this at all…"
"You're not supposed to," Ron replied. "Stay with us."
The child took another step.
Closer now.
Luna could see its face clearly.
There were no expressions.
No emotion.
Only that faint, unnatural glow in its eyes.
"…Luna…" it whispered.
Her name.
Perfectly.
Not distorted.
Not broken.
Her heart skipped.
Ron reacted instantly."Don't listen."
"I'm not," she said quickly, though her voice was unsteady.
The child's lips curved.
Not a smile.
Something wrong.
Something empty.
The petal in its hand twitched.
Then split.
Not into fragments.
Into more petals.
They drifted outward, slow and deliberate, circling them.
Prince Kai's eyes narrowed.
"It is spreading," he said. "We move now."
"Move where?" Kenta asked, panic rising again.
Kai glanced deeper into the room.
The glow at the far end pulsed faintly.
"There," he said.
The child stepped forward again.
This time faster.
The petals reacted instantly.
They surged between the group and the exit behind them.
The doorway darkened.
Blocked.
"…Stay…" the child whispered again.
Ron stepped in front, his voice sharp."We're not staying."
The petals moved toward him.
He raised his hand and pushed forward.
A pulse of force spread out.
Several petals shattered on contact, dissolving into faint light.
For a moment, the whispers faltered.
The child stopped.
Its head tilted further.
Too far.
A quiet sound escaped it.
Not a laugh.
Not a cry.
Something in between.
Kenta flinched."What is that…?"
"Focus," Luna said, grabbing his arm again. "We're moving."
Prince Kai stepped forward.
This time there was no pause.
No hesitation.
He walked straight toward the deeper end of the room.
The petals reacted, but not like before.
They parted.
Slowly.
Reluctantly.
Like they were unsure.
Ron followed immediately.
Luna pulled Kenta with her.
"Don't stop," she whispered.
The child did not chase.
It only watched.
Its glowing eyes followed them.
The whispers shifted again.
Lower.
Quieter.
"…Going deeper…"
"…You remember…"
"…You will stay…"
Luna did not look back.
The glow ahead grew stronger with every step.
The air felt heavier.
Denser.
Like something beneath the surface was waking up.
Kenta's breathing was uneven again."It's still there… it's still watching…"
"I know," Ron said. "Keep walking."
Prince Kai did not turn.
"Do not look back," he said calmly. "It wants acknowledgment. Do not give it that."
The petals drifted around them, slower now.
Watching.
Waiting.
Luna felt it in her chest again.
That pull.
Stronger than before.
Not just from the room.
From something deeper.
Something ahead.
Her steps slowed for a fraction of a second.
Then she forced herself forward.
One step.
Then another.
Behind them, the child remained in the shadows.
Still.
Silent.
Watching them leave.
And ahead,
the path only grew darker.
The moment they stepped deeper into the building, the air felt heavier. Each breath tasted thick, like it was laced with shadows. Petals hovered everywhere, black, silver, some swirling together in chaotic patterns. The whispers followed them, almost crawling over their skin.
"…Come… stay… play…"
Luna hugged her arms tightly. Her legs trembled. "I don't even… I don't even know where to step," she whispered.
Prince Kai crouched slightly, scanning the floor, the walls, the shadows.
Kenta muttered under his breath, voice shaky. "I… I can't… I can hear… all of it… it's too much NOW!"
"Then focus on us," Luna said firmly. "On me. On Ron."
The building seemed to stretch farther than possible. Hallways bent impossibly, walls curved in ways that made sense and then didn't. Every step echoed unnaturally, and sometimes the echoes didn't match. Sometimes they heard whispers coming from their own feet.
"This is insane," Kenta said, voice trembling. "Completely insane…"
"It is," Prince Kai replied calmly. "Keep moving. Don't stop. Don't look back. Don't think. Just move."
The first door they passed opened on its own. A child stepped out. Its face was pale, almost translucent. Its eyes were wide, too wide, reflecting shadows that weren't there.
"...L-Luna.....breakf-fast....is.....r-ready..." the voice whispered.
Luna froze. The child lifted a hand. The shadows in the room twisted, reaching toward them like black smoke.
"Move!" Prince Kai shouted. He grabbed Luna's hand, Kenta's. The trio sprinted down the hallway.
But the moment they ran, the hallway changed. The floor stretched like it had no end. Shadows leaned from the walls, forming faces, some screaming, some laughing, all distorted. Whispers flooded their minds.
Another door opened. Inside, the shadows were thicker. Children stood in circles, facing inward. The whispers were louder. They sounded like echoes of Kenta, Luna, and Ron, all speaking at once, saying everything they feared.
"…You'll fail…""…You can't…""…They'll leave you…"
Luna's head spun. Her chest tightened. She wanted to scream, to run, to fight, but she remembered Prince Kai's warning: never respond to the voices.
Ron took the lead, guiding them carefully. "Step lightly. Don't provoke them."
Kenta's voice broke. "I… I hear… I hear myself…"
"That's why you focus on us," Luna said. "Not them. Us."
The whispers followed every movement, forming shapes in the air, black ribbons that twisted, curling toward them, trying to force panic into their minds. Every reflection they passed in cracked mirrors along the walls was distorted. Their faces twisted in impossible expressions. Eyes too large, mouths too wide, shadows behind them moving independently.
Luna shivered. Her voice almost failed her. "It… it's everywhere…"
"Then we are everywhere," Ron said softly. "Follow me."
They moved through the hallway until it opened into a large courtyard. Moonlight silver, pale, unnatural washed over the stones. Petals swirled in chaotic circles, black and silver. The whispers rose, forming words, phrases, promises, and threats all at once.
Luna's stomach turned. "I can't… I can't handle it…"
"You can," Ron said, voice calm, unshaken."
A figure appeared on the far side. Small. Childlike. Eyes glowing. Its voice carried clearly:
"…Come… stay… play…"
The whispers intensified. They weren't coming from the figure alone anymore, they filled the air, crawling into their ears, slipping into their minds. Luna felt herself trembling, struggling to resist.
Kenta muttered: "I… I… I'm losing… "
The figure lifted its hand. The air thickened. Shadows crawled along the walls, forming hands, faces, bodies. The whispers were deafening, overlapping every thought.
"Stop!" Luna shouted. "Stop, stop, stop!"
The figure paused. Its glowing eyes reflected the swirling shadows. For a moment, the air was still. Then the petals shifted violently, forming a vortex around them.
Ron's eyes narrowed. "Now," Prince Kai said, and with a motion of his hand, the vortex dispersed. The shadows shrieked and hissed, retreating into corners. Petals slowed, floating lazily again.
Kenta's shoulders shook. "I… I… I… almost…"
"Almost what?" Luna asked, holding him.
"…Almost lost it," he whispered. "Almost answered…"
They moved forward, leaving the courtyard. The whispers remained faint but persistent. Petals drifted slowly around them, black and silver together, almost calm now.
A long corridor appeared. At its end, a door opened into darkness. From beyond the door came a faint glow. Luna felt it like a pull in her chest, another marker, another hint at the path forward.
"We're close," Ron said. "Step carefully."
The corridor seemed longer than possible. Shadows shifted along the walls. Every reflection in the cracked mirrors was twisted, every echo distorted. Luna felt panic rising, but she forced herself to breathe.
Another figure appeared in a doorway along the side. A child, hair tangled, eyes glowing faintly, whispering their names. Luna froze. Kenta shook violently.
"Ignore it," Ron said.
They passed the figure, the shadows curling back into the walls. The whispers followed them, but for the first time, they didn't feel like they were being pulled in. Step by step. Step by step. Step by step.
Finally, the door at the end opened fully. Light spilled out. Petals lifted, circling lazily, shadows retreating. Whispers softened to faint murmurs, almost like a lullaby.
Luna exhaled. "We… we made it…"
Kenta slumped to the floor. "I… I thought… I… I…"
Prince Kai helped him up. "You didn't respond. That's what matters."
The door led into another courtyard. This one was calm. Moonlight bright, petals floating lazily. No shadows. No whispers. It seemed… normal, almost. But Luna knew better. Somewhere in the darkness, the voices waited, watching, always waiting.
"You survived," prince said. His voice was calm but carried weight. "But the village… the labyrinth… it knows you are here. It will not stop."
Luna swallowed. "We… we're not home yet, are we?"
Kai shook his head. "No. You are deeper than before. The echoes are strong. They test fear, doubt, weakness. They want you to answer. To follow. To disappear."
Kenta muttered, voice shaky. "SO...I AM DEAD.."
Kai's eyes studied them. "The path home is farther than you think. The village bends around you. It tests what you value, what you fear, what you hold onto. You are strong… but the labyrinth is older than you imagine. It will not yield easily."
Ron's gaze hardened. "Then we adapt. Step by step. Petals, markers, anomalies. We follow. Nothing else matters."
Kai nodded once. "Yes. But beware. Not everything you see is real. Not every voice tells the truth. Not every child… is a child."
The whispers began again, faint, almost playful. The petals stirred in soft spirals. Shadows flickered at the edges of their vision.
Luna swallowed hard. "Then we keep walking. Step by step."
Ron nodded. "Step by step."
Kenta hesitated, voice barely above a whisper. "Step… by… step…"
And so they moved forward, deeper into the labyrinth, whispers chasing them, shadows stretching along the walls, petals circling like living things, the village alive and watching, waiting for the moment they faltered.
The path home was still a promise, faint and distant. The labyrinth had only just begun to test them.
