Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 — The First Interruption

The underground chamber had grown quieter.

Most of the excavation workers had stepped back to give Li Wen space as she studied the massive stone door.

Powerful lights illuminated the carvings that covered its surface.

Circular patterns.

Interlocking symbols.

A strange mixture of Egyptian hieroglyphs and markings that resembled early Qin engineering codes.

Li Wen crouched slightly, examining the lower section of the door.

Her notebook rested beside her, already filled with sketches of the patterns.

"This isn't just decoration," she murmured.

Arun leaned against the nearby wall, watching her work.

"You're still convinced it's a mechanism?"

Li Wen nodded without looking up.

"Yes."

She pointed to three carved shapes arranged in a triangular formation.

"These symbols repeat across the tablet we found earlier."

Arun walked closer.

"And?"

"And repetition usually means instruction."

She traced the outline of one of the carvings carefully.

"Look here."

Arun crouched beside her.

The symbol resembled a stylized mountain.

But surrounding it were smaller lines that looked almost like directional arrows.

"It's not just a symbol," Li Wen said quietly.

"It's part of a sequence."

Arun frowned.

"You think the carvings tell us how to open the door?"

"Exactly."

She stood up and stepped back slightly.

"Whoever designed this expected someone intelligent enough to understand multiple cultures."

Albert watched them from a few steps away.

"So the puzzle requires knowledge of both Egyptian and Qin traditions."

Li Wen nodded.

"Which means this door wasn't meant to be opened easily."

Before Albert could reply, Arun's phone vibrated in his pocket.

He glanced at the screen.

"I should take this," he said.

"Go ahead," Albert replied.

Arun stepped away from the group and moved toward the passage leading back to the elevator shaft.

"Hello?" he said quietly into the phone.

There was a short pause.

His expression changed.

"Oh—you're here already?"

He turned back toward the chamber.

"Alright. Come down."

Arun ended the call and walked back toward the group.

"That was our security," he explained.

"Mark."

Albert nodded.

"Good timing."

A few minutes later, the elevator platform descended again.

The sound of metal cables echoed through the chamber.

When the platform reached the bottom, a tall man stepped off.

He wore a dark tactical jacket and carried a small equipment bag over his shoulder.

Mark.

His eyes scanned the chamber immediately.

"Quite the excavation site," he said calmly.

Albert walked over to greet him.

"Glad you could make it."

Mark shook his hand briefly before looking toward the massive stone door.

"That's what you called me for?"

Li Wen spoke without turning around.

"Actually, we called you because we might be about to open something that's been sealed for two thousand years."

Mark raised an eyebrow.

"That tends to attract trouble."

Li Wen smiled faintly.

"You're probably right."

But before anyone could continue—

far above them, on the surface of the desert—

another group had already arrived.

Black vehicles stopped quietly beyond the excavation perimeter.

Several men stepped out.

They wore dark clothing and spoke in low voices.

One of them held a tablet displaying satellite images of the excavation site.

The screen zoomed in on the underground chamber.

And the massive stone door.

The man studying the screen frowned.

"They found it faster than expected."

Another man asked quietly.

"What do we do now?"

The first man looked toward the desert horizon.

Then he gave a short answer.

"Stop them."

And beneath the sands of Egypt—

Li Wen had just discovered the first symbol that could unlock the ancient door.
