Arthur's eyes fixed on the sword. He couldn't take his gaze away from it. And its whispers slowly got louder and louder.
"Take me… Take me…"
Arthur reached his hand toward the Prisoner. Carter caught his wrist immediately and smacked him across the face.
"Ouch! What was that for?" Arthur said.
"You're okay, now?" Carter smiled.
"I… Woah! What just happened?" Arthur moved farther from the blade.
"That is what it's like to be an Eldritch Knight. And that is also how you become an Eldritch Knight. Your mind needs to be strong enough to resist Terror.
If you can't even be calm when facing a Terror, how can you even fight it?"
Arthur shared a crooked smile, "That's… This thing is dangerous. You live with these whispers everyday."
"That is what I signed up for, kid." Carter said.
He picked the Prisoner up and stood.
"This is goodbye, my friend. Stay safe."
Carter jumped from the balcony and landed on another roof. He traversed over rooftops until he disappeared from Arthur's eyes.
"Holy shit. He is cool." Arthur mumbled.
Once Carter was out of sight, he turned back to the System Ghost.
[SYSTEM GHOST EQUIPPED]
'Let me see what those two have been doing.'
Carter used the Cyber Core to locate Nina and Quill. He found their location via Quill's Cyber Core. They were hiding inside a hideout similar to the one from before.
Carter hacked the mainframe of the hideout and accessed its camera.
Nina and Quill were alive. They successfully infiltrated into this society.
'These two are capable enough. I hope they will pick up on the clues I left.'
Carter used the Disguise Skill to transform into Carter Caine and returned to his home. The night had passed and it's time for him to have some rest.
Kaito knocked on the wooden door. But no one answered him.
He stepped back and took a look at the building. It was an old traditional style building. Probably built in the industrial revolution. Most of the time, people avoided these buildings because of the potential of Terror.
However, it was newly bought by some millionaire with the last name Caine.
Kaito was hired by him to be the butler and caretaker for the house.
The man scanned the place and spotted a small hidden doorbell.
"They probably haven't fixed this place since the 80s. No one should keep a doorbell this hidden."
Kaito pressed the doorbell. Silence stretched but there was a response this time.
"Yes, who is it?"
"I'm Kaito, the new butler!" Kaito shouted into the comms. He was worried that it might not pick up his voice.
"Ah, yes. Come in, Kaito. Be at home. I need to rest. Don't disturb me."
The door clicked open and the voice was gone.
"What a weird man." Kaito mumbled.
He went inside and checked the place. Layers of dust covered his finger when he swiped it on the furniture.
"He hasn't been cleaning it at all. The guy probably just bought the place out right. Well. I am here for a reason."
Kaito rolled his sleeves up and got to work. He wrapped a white cloth over his forehead to absorb the sweat.
He took care of the furniture first, cleaned what he could, and got rid of what wasn't needed.
The owner was actually pretty chill. The only goal for the job was to make it as presentable as possible and Kaito could decide everything. Caine even allowed him to make purchases under his name.
If it was any other workers, they would have robbed Caine naked. But he picked a good one. Kaito was the best there was.
And Kaito usually didn't take this kind of job. But Caine paid really well.
'I don't know if you're a fool or you're just brave, Caine.' Kaito thought to himself.
He didn't know that Carter didn't even have a single worry in his mind. If anyone tried to rob him, well… Let's just say he could add more Synchronization for one of his Terror Skins.
Kaito spent hours cleaning the place. It looked respectable now and felt like an ancient haunted house.
The butler sat on the couch to catch some breath. Suddenly, there was a ring in the doorbell.
He went over to check it. Unfortunately, this house didn't have any ring camera.
"Who is it?" Kaito looked through the peephole.
Outside was a group of black clothing people. Kaito recognized them immediately. The Invokers.
Piper raised the business card above the peephole, "We were invited by Carter Caine to his house. Business reasons."
"Wait there. I'll inform you."
Kaito came to Carter's bedroom and knocked on the door.
"Mr. Caine? Some Invokers are here to see you."
No answer. Just before Kaito was going to knock again, Carter answered.
"Let them in, Kaito. I'll be right there."
"Alright, sir."
Kaito led the Invokers inside the house. He prepared some biscuits and tea for them.
"Woah. These are some good biscuits!" An Invoker said.
"Behave yourself, Franklin." Piper scoffed at him.
"Hey, don't worry too much. He did invite us here, right?"
Piper rolled her eyes.
Kaito stood in the corner of the room, 'Mr. Caine seems more mysterious than he actually is. What does he want with these Invokers?'
Carter arrived in the room after a few minutes.
"Hello, everyone. It's good for you to join."
Carter sat down, he waved at Kaito, "Come, Kaito. Join us."
"Yes, Mr. Caine."
Carter picked up the tea pot and poured some for each of them.
"So. You're here because of the Eldritch Knight, I suppose?" Carter said.
Piper nodded, "We met one last night. He said he was your friend."
"Zeneros?" Carter raised an eyebrow.
"That's right."
"We go way back, yes. You're here to join him?" Carter said.
"Not all of us. We haven't met the guy yet. I just want to see what an Eldritch Knight is." An Invoker said.
"You don't need to say anything if no one talks to you, Charlie." Piper said.
"Hey! I was just being honest."
Carter chuckled, "Don't worry now. We are friends here.
Now. Being an Invoker for an Eldritch Knight is not a simple job. Not only that you need to be good enough. You need to be trustworthy as well. He can't kill Terrors if he has to watch his back all the time, can he?"
Charlie raised an eyebrow, "What are you saying? That we aren't trustworthy?"
"I'm saying that there might be people that don't want to save this world, Charlie." Carter smiled mysteriously.
The Invokers stared at him in confusion.
