Chapter 27 - Chapter 26 — Controlled Exposure

The day went by slowly.

Morning training ended then it was time to eat. After that Lin Tian had to study the basic principles of the sect.

Lin Tian followed the routine staying quiet and trying to learn much as he could.

He did not have any trouble keeping up with the others. Not when it came to strength or endurance.. In his mind every action felt like it was separate from the others.

The world around him was moving in a rhythm with each step and movement feeling like it was connected. For Lin Tian it was like his rhythm was not fully in sync with the world around him.

By the middle of the afternoon the courtyard was empty again with a few disciples still hanging around.

Then a shadow fell over Lin Tian.

He looked up to see the observer from the day before standing at the edge of the stone path watching him calmly.

"Lin Tian " the man said softly without any authority or impatience in his voice.

Lin Tian stood up. He did not move any closer to the man. He just looked at him.

"You have been practicing on your own " the man said.

"Yes " Lin Tian replied, keeping his answer short and simple.

The man nodded, then took a step to Lin Tian walking around him in a circle as if he was trying to measure the Qi inside him. "Your flow of energy is unusual, chaotic and dense. It does not follow the paths that we use here."

Lin Tian did not flinch, because he had already felt that something was different about his energy. The Chaos Qi inside him had become stronger and more responsive the night but it was still not like the energy of the other disciples.

"You will not be able to succeed if you keep using your own path " the man said, his voice neutral but serious. "If you want to stay you will have to follow the structure and methods that we use for the disciples. You will have to do the exercises repeat them absorb the energy and circulate it."

Lin Tian pressed his lips together. Stayed silent.

The man studied him for a moment then said, "Or I can give you an exercise to try. Just observe the pattern learn from it and do not try to force it. Let it influence your flow of energy."

Lin Tian nodded slowly. "I will try it."

The man motioned for Lin Tian to stand in the center of the courtyard, where the stone floor was empty and open to the sky.

"Focus on the Qi around you track its movement. Do not try to mingle with it or change it. Just observe it for one hour."

Lin Tian stepped into the center of the courtyard feeling the Qi around him. It was different from the energy in the morning courtyard, which had been structured for group training.

This energy was uninterrupted and quiet with shifts and patterns that felt like they were testing him gently.

He closed his eyes. Started to breathe slowly feeling the Chaos Qi inside him respond automatically. It was dense and heavy flowing inside him. It still felt separate from the external Qi.

The external Qi moved around him forming waves and patterns that repeated and overlapped. Lin Tians breath slowed down as he watched the Qi trying not to interfere with it.

At first it felt frustrating because his instinct was to try to control and integrate the energy.

But the mans instructions kept repeating in his mind: observe, do not force, let it influence your flow.

So he stopped trying to control it. Just observed the Qi following its patterns and movements with his awareness. He did this for ten minutes, twenty minutes and then thirty minutes.

As he observed the Qi he started to notice patterns emerging, with recurrences and circulation arcs. He saw gaps and zones where the energy accumulated naturally and pathways where it flowed easily.

He adjusted his focus and the Chaos Qi inside him shifted and responded, flowing and refining itself without merging with the Qi.

A thread of understanding formed in his mind as he realized that the external Qi had its structure and method.

His internal Qi was free and chaotic. It was also aware and responsive.

The man stepped forward silently. Lin Tian opened his eyes.

"Did you notice that?" the man asked.

"Yes " Lin Tian replied.

"You did not touch the Qi you did not absorb it. You did not resist it. And yet your Qi reacted it responded and it was controlled " the man said.

Lin Tian nodded, feeling a sense of understanding and connection.

"That is acceptable for now " the man said, his gaze sharpening. ". Your path will not be easy. You will have to adapt and combine structure with your flow of energy carefully. Any mistake could lead to failure. It may be difficult for you to recover."

Lin Tian felt the weight of the mans words knowing that they were not a threat. A fact.

"Yes " he said.

The man stepped back his expression serious. "Return to your quarters observe and do not take any action until I instruct you."

Lin Tian left the courtyard feeling quiet and on the outside but with the Chaos Qi inside him circulating differently.

It was responding to the environment to even the smallest shifts in energy.

He had felt for the time that the outer disciples methods could influence him without overwhelming him and that was a small revelation.

It was only the beginning and he did not know how far it would take him. He knew that it would not be easy and that others were starting to notice him.

By nightfall the word had spread quietly among the disciples. "He is strange " some of them whispered. "He does not follow the path " others said.

The observer reported to the levels not alarmed, not threatened, but interested and watching.

Lin Tian lay in his quarters surrounded by darkness. He closed his eyes. Let the Qi flow feeling the Chaos Qi move inside him refined and responsive but still separate.

For the first time in the sect he felt the stirrings of recognition knowing that someone was paying attention to him.

That attention, controlled and measured would be more dangerous, than indifference.
