Chapter 42 - Chapter 41 – Echoes of the Past

Darkness did not greet Lin Tian Memory did.

The moment he stepped through the doorway the air changed. It was not heavy or distorted like before. It was dense.

The air was saturated with something complex than raw Qi it was filled with Intent.

His Chaos Qi reacted instantly. It flared outward. Then settled into a cautious flow around him. His Chaos Qi was not being attacked,. It was being read.

The ground beneath his feet was no longer stone it was cracked and uneven. The ground was marked by gouges and scorched lines that stretched across a vast open expanse this was a battlefield.

Lin Tians gaze swept outward he saw pillars that were broken and shattered. They were scattered across the terrain some leaned at angles and others were reduced to rubble.

The carvings of dragons and phoenixes were clearer here. Many were torn apart.

A faint wind. Then a figure appeared. The figure was not formed and not summoned it was there.

Lin Tian did not move his Chaos Qi tightened, not in defense. In observation. The figure stood dozen steps away it was a man clad in ancient robes.

The mans posture was steady and his presence was sharp there was no life in his eyes. There was no emptiness either.

The man raised his hand. Qi gathered. In the instant the battlefield erupted, dozens of figures manifested across the broken ground.

Each figure was mid-motion, mid-strike, mid-breath blades. Techniques collided. Explosions of Qi tore through the air. There was no sound, only movement.

Lin Tians eyes sharpened he said "These are not illusions".

Gu Chen said quietly "No they are imprints echoes left behind by those who fought here".

Lin Tian watched as two cultivators collided in front of him one wielded a blazing spear. The other was surrounded by icy currents.

Their techniques met, froze, shattered and then repeated the moment looping endlessly.

Lin Tian said softly "Qi remembers" Gu Chen replied "Not Qi, Intent, Will the very essence of their actions".

A figure suddenly moved toward Lin Tian too fast Lin Tian reacted instinctively his Chaos Qi surged and then he stopped.

The figure passed through him there was no impact, no resistance,. His Chaos Qi rippled violently.

Lin Tian frowned he said "So they can not touch me physically" Gu Chen finished "But they can disrupt your flow".

Lin Tian exhaled slowly this made the situation more dangerous than it appeared. The battlefield stretched endlessly ahead filled with overlapping echoes some moved slowly locked in drawn-out clashes others flashed in bursts of speed.

Every echo carried intent and every echo could interfere with Lin Tian he took a step forward. Immediately three figures intersected his path, one lunging, one retreating one mid-strike their movements overlapped chaotically. Not randomly.

Lin Tians Chaos Qi extended, brushing against their imprints he felt patterns, not in their techniques. In their timing.

Lin Tian moved forward not avoiding them but aligning his movement with theirs the lunging figure passed ahead of him the retreating one shifted just behind the strike missed him by a fraction.

Lin Tian continued walking his movements began to synchronize with the battlefield not not rigidly but adaptively. Each step adjusted to the rhythms around him his Chaos Qi constantly recalibrating.

A blade swept toward his shoulder Lin Tian tilted, not away from it. With its trajectory the imprint passed through him his Qi trembled, but held.

Another figure appeared at his side releasing a burst of energy Lin Tian rotated, compressing his Chaos Qi enough to let the wave pass without destabilizing his core.

His breathing remained steady his gaze calm this was not a fight it was a dance, an one.

The deeper he moved into the battlefield the more complex the echoes became movements overlapped densely techniques chained together in rapid succession.

A single misstep and his Chaos Qi would collapse.

A sudden shift caught his attention ahead the echoes changed they were no longer repeating fragments of combat they were continuous.

A group of cultivators moved together their coordination precise their techniques flowing seamlessly from one to another.

Opposite them stood a figure, still unmoving Lin Tian slowed the lone figure raised his head and for the first time an echo looked directly at him.

Lin Tians eyes narrowed he said "That one is different" Gu Chen did not respond immediately he said at last "Be careful".

The group attacked, speed, coordinated strikes from all directions the lone figure moved, not fast not flashy, but perfectly.

Each step was placed where it needed to be each movement minimal efficient absolute.

The attacks passed him by inches by breaths, never touching, never disrupting then he struck, once the battlefield froze every echo within that space halted for a fraction of a second then shattered, not silently.

Lin Tians Chaos Qi pulsed, that movement it was not powerful it was not overwhelming it was precise perfectly aligned with the flow of everything around it.

Lin Tian began "That's" Gu Chen said quietly "Understanding, a level beyond adaptation".

The lone figure turned his gaze met Lin Tians again. Then he moved, not attacking, not approaching, just stepping.

Lin Tian felt it instantly the entire battlefield shifted all the echoes adjusted, their rhythms changing, their patterns realigning centered around that one figure.

Lin Tians breathing slowed he said "So this is the trial" Gu Chen did not say anything Lin Tian continued "Not passing through the echoes but understanding them".

The figure took another step Lin Tian followed, not not blindly but in response his Chaos Qi shifted, not just adapting, but beginning to anticipate.

Lin Tians Chaos Qi was beginning to read the intent behind the movements, not the movements themselves step the battlefield moved, step the echoes aligned.

Lin Tians Chaos Qi changed, subtly deeply for the time he was not just reacting to chaos he was beginning to comprehend it.

The lone figure stopped so did Lin Tian, for a moment nothing moved then the figure raised his hand and the entire battlefield surged. Every echo, every technique every fragment of intent collapsed toward Lin Tian.

His Chaos Qi flared, compressed, expanded flowed his body moved, not in panic, not in resistance. In perfect shifting alignment with the incoming storm.

Step, shift, turn, flow, compress, release the echoes passed through him around him with him until silence.

The battlefield was gone only Lin Tian remained, standing in a empty space his Chaos Qi settled slowly the flow deeper more refined than before.

Gu Chens voice came softly "You did not resist" Lin Tian exhaled "No I listened".

Ahead a new path formed, clear, stable, waiting Lin Tian stepped forward without hesitation.

The echoes had not attacked him they had taught him. The ruins were far, from finished.
