Chapter 43 - Chapter 42 – The Fractured Mind Trial

The moment Lin Tian stepped onto the path the world turned upside down.

There was no warning, no change in the air no sign of what was coming.

Up was down and down was nothing.

Lin Tians body reacted away his Chaos Qi jumping in to steady him. But this was not a thing it was all in his mind. His feet were still on the ground.

Everything in him was screaming that he was falling.

He stopped moving. Forced himself to be still. He slowed down his breathing making it slow and steady.

Gu Chens voice came from somewhere sounding strained like it was coming from away. "This is a mind trial " he said.

Lin Tian did not say anything.

His eyes were open. What he saw did not make sense. The ground was like a wall in front of him the sky was pushing down on him like a ceiling and the horizon was all twisted and wrong.

His body was not moving.

"It's not real " he said to himself.

His Chaos Qi was not so sure.

The energy around him was all unstable reacting to the things he was seeing. Some of it was going up some was going down.

Some was just spinning around.

The danger was not what he was seeing it was how he was reacting to it.

Lin Tian took a step forward.

Soon as his foot left the ground everything in him started screaming. He felt like he was falling. His vision was all over the place. His instincts kicked in.

His Chaos Qi jumped out to catch him but it just made things worse.

The energy inside him was all fractured going every which way and colliding with itself.

Lin Tians face got tight.

He stopped moving. Put his foot back down.

Soon as it touched the ground everything got a little better.

The crazy vision did not go away. The conflict inside him lessened.

"So moving makes it happen " he said quietly.

Gu Chen said, "Not just moving, but what you think about the moving."

Lin Tians eyes got sharper.

He thought about what Gu Chen said. Belief.

He looked down. What he thought was down.

The ground felt solid under him his body said it was solid and his Qi said it was solid.

His eyes were telling him something different.

His eyes were telling him he was standing on the edge of a drop.

Lin Tian took a breath and let it out slow.

"Then I won't listen to them " he said.

He closed his eyes.

The crazy vision went away replaced by darkness.

Away the pull on his senses got less.

His Chaos Qi started to settle down not reacting to the things he was seeing.

It was not all better.

The instability was still there.

Because the illusion was not something he saw.

It was something that was changing how he thought.

Up forward backward all of it was being twisted.

Lin Tian sent his Chaos Qi out, a little to see what was around him.

The feedback. It said the ground was solid.

The direction of that solidity was all over the place.

One moment it felt like it was under him the next it felt like it was beside him. Then it felt like it was behind him.

Lin Tian got a little frown on his face.

"So even my Qi is being messed with " he said.

Gu Chen said, "Its not being messed with its being challenged."

Lin Tian understood.

The ruins were not giving him information.

They were just taking away the certainty of anything.

He took a step forward. This time he did not rely on what he saw.

He did not rely entirely on his Qi either.

He relied on the flow of his energy.

His Chaos Qi was moving in a rhythm inside him not reacting to anything just anchoring itself.

He took another step.

The feeling of falling came back strong and scary.

Lin Tian did not fight it.

He just let it be.

His body tilted a little. His core stayed steady.

His Qi kept flowing, unchanged.

He took another step. The direction changed.

Now it felt like he was walking sideways on a wall.

His instincts were screaming again. His Chaos Qi was trembling.

Then it steadied.

Gu Chen said, "Good..."

Lin Tian kept moving, taking steps shifting and turning.

He was not trying to correct the illusion he was not trying to figure out which way was up.

He was just. Letting his energy flow.

The world around him got even crazier.

At one point he felt like he was down hanging over a huge void.

The pressure on his mind was strong trying to make him react.

Trying to make him choose a direction.

Lin Tian refused.

"There is no up " he said softly.

"There is no down."

"There is movement."

His Chaos Qi responded, flowing deeper and smoother.

The instability started to fade not because the illusion was getting weaker. Because his Qi was not fighting it anymore.

He took another step.

The ground felt away then it felt close then it felt like it was not there at all.

Lin Tian did not fall.

There was a shift and the world snapped.

His senses flipped completely.

For a moment he felt like he was standing on nothing.

No ground, no direction no orientation.

Just empty space.

His Chaos Qi jumped up. Then it stopped.

Lin Tians face stayed calm.

"If there is nothing " he said quietly "then I don't need to stand."

His body relaxed, not falling, not collapsing, just releasing the need for support.

His Chaos Qi flowed freely not anchoring to any direction just circulating inside him.

The pressure went away. The distortion faded.

Slowly the world came back to normal.

Lin Tian opened his eyes.

The path was straight and stable in front of him.

The crazy sky and ground were gone.

There was silence.

He was at the end of the trial.

Behind him the space was shimmering like it was acknowledging that he had passed.

Gu Chen took a breath and let it out slow.

"You didn't fight it " he said.

Lin Tian shook his head.

"There was nothing to fight."

He looked down at his hand flexing his fingers.

His Chaos Qi responded, smooth and controlled deeper than before.

"This place " he said, "it doesn't make obstacles."

"It takes away certainty."

Gu Chen was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, "And you're learning to move without it."

Lin Tian looked up ahead of him.

There was a structure, older and bigger than before.

Three huge stone doors stood side by side each one feeling different.

One was stable and strong one was violent and destructive and the last one...

Lin Tians eyes narrowed a little.

The third door was pulsing with something that felt like his Chaos Qi.

Gu Chen said, "Looks like the trial."

Lin Tian took a step forward steady and calm.

Uncertain ground did not matter anymore.

Crazy vision did not matter anymore.

He had learned something, than balance.

He had learned to let go of the need for it.

Step, shift, turn, flow.

As he approached the doors the air got heavier.

The ruins were watching him again.

This time the choice ahead would not be easy.
