Elain had no choice but to raise her head, her green eyes staring back into Rafelius's silver ones. A look of satisfaction flashed in his, while hers filled with controlled annoyance.
She had never hated being beneath someone's status as much as she did now. He looked as though he were pleased that he could make her do his bidding, now that it was clear who held higher status between them.
"Can I leave now, Mr. Greyford?" she said as amiably as she could, forcing the bitterness down her throat.
"Why do you seem so annoyed? Did you not like the taste of the dried apricot I fed you?"
The playful tone didn't escape her ears, and she subtly glared at him.
"It tasted good, and it helped my earlier nausea, for which I am grateful. But if you don't mind, I hope you won't mention it to anyone or let people know of our past encounters."
