—1st day of middle school—
"So why did I have to arrive 20 minutes early?" I asked Nezu who had accompanied me via car on my first day.
"We are going to have a chat with the principal."
"And what does that have to do with the Nezu Cap?" I stared at the cap in his hand that had Nezu's face stretched across it.
"You want it?" Nezu faced me.
…
"Kinda."
'That cap looks hilarious bro…'
Trying to hold back a laugh I gracefully accepted the cap and put it on.
'Hurts my ears.'
I took it off.
"We're here. Let's go in." Nezu jumped out and so I followed walking past the sign and into the main yard.
"Hello there you two." The headmaster was waiting. "How about we have a little chat on that bench over there."
…
At the bench we decided to sit opposite the headmaster.
"Let's go over this, while in this school you will always have the seat next to the exit…"
'Then I can leave as fast as possible.'
I nodded my head in agreement.
"… In return you will hold back as to not hurt anyone. Does that seem fair?"
"Thanks sir, that is very fair." I tried and failed to look back at him.
"Well then, Nezu if you may leave the premises before the students get here and I will send Takaba to his classroom."
"Good luck Takaba, and Principal, take care of him please." He walked off back the way he came.
"Let's be off then."
I followed the principal away.
…
"Here is your classroom Takaba, your teacher is inside so I will leave you here."
"Thanks for everything Principal."
"Just doing my job." He walked off.
Standing outside the door I noticed a sign sticking out of the wall. Written on it was '1-1' for my class number.
'Year 1, class 1. Here we go.'
Sliding the door open I walked in.
"Hey there! You must be Takaba!" A cheerful voice came from the room.
Sitting at a front desk was a young woman with long, brown hair, an average sized body, brown eyes and was wearing a formal suit.
I glanced at her before looking away at the board where a name had been scribbled.
"Is that your name?" I asked while looking at the board.
"Yes, I am Suzuki. Your home room teacher."
I was still standing there awkwardly.
"You can sit right there at the bottom left of the class, next to the exit."
I pulled my cap down a little further and sat. "So how long until the others start to arrive?"
"They should be here in five minutes after finding out where the class is."
—five minutes later—
Suddenly a stream of students started to file into the room.
The teacher called out. "One at a time, there's a seating plan."
After a while everyone was seated. It was an even split of boys and girls with the seating arranged to be boy-girl-boy-girl etc.
"Now everyone is settled let me introduce myself." The teacher stood at the top of the classroom. "I am Suzuki, your home room teacher and your English teacher."
After a cough she continued. "Anyone want to introduce themselves?"
Everyone's hand but mine then shot up.
"Alright everyone. Line up so you can state your name and whatever else you want to say." The teacher walked to the back of the class where the line ended and I was sitting.
She leaned down and whispered. "You don't have to do this, but I think you should at least say your name."
'She is right... Unfortunately. I can say my name then sit back down.'
Waiting in line I noticed people saying their names and their quirks. There wasn't anything particularly special. Some had different skin colours, some looked part-animal and others could do things that was kind of just wrong.
In no time it was my turn. Inhaling I stood up in front of the now seated class. My eyes were cast downward in tandem with my ears.
"My name is Takaba Kurusu. I am actually 12 even though my size might say otherwise." I scratched the back of my head and wandered back to my seat. A couple heads turned to look at me as I walked but I ignored it.
After a while lunch break came around and people started separating into groups and leaving for lunch. A bunch of boys gathered together and whispered to each other eventually then splitting off into pairs to talk to other groups.
Two boys approached me and said. "Hey there? Want to join the arm wrestle contest?" They both grinned at me.
'Let's try my best.'
"Sure I'm in." I looked at both of them.
"Alright! They synchronised. "Follow us."
I got out my seat and followed them to the cafeteria where the entirety of the boys in our class had gathered.
They were set up in a line on both sides of the table. Facing off.
Before they started one of the leaders said. "We need a ref! Who's up for it."
Everyone else just wanted to get into it, which I noticed, and there was silence for three seconds.
"I'll do it." I raised my hand and looked towards them.
Everyone then got to it under my gaze.
Quickly there was two left. The one who asked for a referee and one of the two who invited me earlier.
Soon enough the boys finished and the leader has won.
I raised my hand to indicate that he had won and he stood up and pointed at me.
"I, Yamamoto, challenge you!" He grinned at me. "You're the only one who hasn't challenged anyone yet and I can't know I won without testing you."
Everyone glanced around then stared at the both of us.
"You in?"
Everyone tensed.
My eye twitched. "Fine."
…
Everyone was in shock. Little old me had easily bested Yamamoto in two seconds with one push. He lay sprawled on the ground and laughed.
"Haha! That was insane." He giggled. "You can call me Yamamoto, what your name?"
I looked over the bench to get a better look at him. "You can call me Kurusu." I smiled before touching my face in wonder.
'Maybe this won't be so bad after all.'
All the boys cheered as me and Yamamoto shook hands. Then they all crowded around me into a defensive position.
One said. "King of class one, what will we do now." They all turned to me.
"Act like a normal person, maybe?" I was bewildered.
…
They all then looked at me in reverence and split off into their own groups leaving me and Yamamoto.
"Want to be friends then, Takaba?" He smiled.
"Sure." I walked away.
"Hey where you going?" He shouted after me.
"To eat? Lunch is nearly over." I sat at a table.
He pulled out his hand and placed his fist in it. "I see."
After returning to class the home room teacher said. "Now you should have made friends so you can sit wherever you want."
The entire class froze.
SCREECH
Yamamoto quickly ran towards me and asked the person to the side of me if he could sit there.
He quickly managed to sit down.
Everyone else was still sitting in their spots.
"What are you waiting for?" The teacher gestured for everyone to move.
Everyone then got up and tried to take some seats. It ended with the boys managing to make a protective circle around me with no cracks. Unfortunately the girls had spaced out making it so not all the boys could be in the corner I was in.
Suzuki smiled at me and said. "Now that that is done. You may leave for the day. Classes start tomorrow."
Everyone stood up and went to collect their things. The girls quickly filed out but all the boys stood back. Even Yamamoto had to stop me from leaving.
"Can I have your phone number?" Yamamoto asked me.
"Sure." I gave it to him before leaving.
Unbeknownst to me the boys were all plotting in the classroom.
Yamamoto stood up on his desk. "Attention please!"
Everyone faced him.
"We need to talk about Kurusu." He said gravely. "We must protect him. Look at him, he's very strong and a staple of this class, but he looks like that."
He looked everyone in the eye. "We must stop the girls from getting ahold of him. He's simply to adorable in their eyes. HOWEVER, us boys will band together to stop them from corrupting him!"
He paused. "Who is with ME?!" He pointed toward the crowd.
Everyone simultaneously raised their hands.
"Okay then, operation blue chick begins."
He quickly exchanged contacts with everyone before making a group chat without Takaba called 'Operation: Blue Chick'.
They all left with grave looks on their faces.
—Meanwhile—
Midnight and Nezu had both picked me up.
"How did it go?"
"Well, I made a friend."
Midnight grabbed me and ruffled my hair. "That's what I like to hear."
I couldn't stop the grin that was spreading across my face. That was until Midnight started stretching my cheeks.
