Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Someone Else Is Watching

The library was too quiet.

---

Not silent.

Never silent.

There were always sounds—pages turning, distant footsteps, the low hum of air conditioning.

---

But today—

Something felt… off.

---

Ayaan noticed it immediately.

Not as a thought.

As a shift.

---

Meera was still sitting across from him.

Calm.

Focused.

Reading.

---

But her page hadn't turned in three minutes.

---

Ayaan's gaze lowered slightly.

Her fingers rested on the edge of the paper.

Still.

---

Unmoving.

---

"She noticed it too."

---

The conclusion formed without hesitation.

---

Ayaan leaned back slightly in his chair.

Adjusted his angle.

Not toward her—

---

Toward the room.

---

Scanning.

---

Left side: three students.

Talking quietly.

Irrelevant.

---

Right side: empty tables.

No movement.

---

Far end—

---

A figure.

---

Standing near the shelves.

---

Not reading.

Not moving.

---

Watching.

---

---

Ayaan's eyes narrowed slightly.

---

Male.

Early twenties.

Phone in hand.

---

But the screen wasn't active.

---

It was angled.

---

Not toward himself.

---

Toward—

---

Meera.

---

---

Ayaan's attention sharpened.

---

Observation pattern:

Minimal movement

Repeated glances

Position maintained for extended time

---

Conclusion:

---

Not random.

---

---

"You see him."

---

Meera's voice was quiet.

Barely above a whisper.

---

Ayaan didn't look at her.

---

"Yes."

---

---

A pause.

---

Then—

She turned the page.

---

Finally.

---

But the movement was slower than usual.

---

Controlled.

---

---

"He's been there since before you came," she said.

---

Ayaan's mind adjusted instantly.

---

"Why didn't you leave?"

---

---

Meera's lips curved faintly.

---

"I wanted to see if you'd notice."

---

---

Ayaan's gaze flickered toward her.

---

Just for a second.

---

---

This again.

---

Tests.

---

Always tests.

---

---

"He's not subtle," Ayaan said.

---

"No," Meera agreed softly.

---

"But he's persistent."

---

---

Ayaan focused on the figure again.

---

The man shifted slightly.

Adjusted his grip on the phone.

---

Still watching.

---

Too openly.

---

Too confidently.

---

---

Amateur.

---

---

"He doesn't understand distance," Ayaan said.

---

---

Meera closed her book.

---

The soft sound echoed faintly.

---

For a moment—

Neither of them moved.

---

---

Then she stood.

---

Ayaan didn't stop her.

---

Didn't speak.

---

---

She walked past him.

---

Slow.

Measured.

---

As if nothing was wrong.

---

---

The man at the shelves straightened.

---

Subtle.

But noticeable.

---

---

Ayaan watched the shift.

---

Interest confirmed.

---

---

He stood.

---

Followed.

---

---

Not close.

---

Not obvious.

---

---

Just enough.

---

---

Meera reached the end of the aisle.

---

Turned left.

---

Disappeared between the shelves.

---

---

The man hesitated.

---

Then followed.

---

---

Ayaan's pace didn't change.

---

---

Three seconds later—

---

He turned into the same aisle.

---

---

---

Empty.

---

---

No.

---

Not empty.

---

---

Meera stood halfway down.

---

Back to the shelf.

---

Still.

---

---

The man stood in front of her.

---

Too close.

---

Blocking her path.

---

---

"You're here a lot," he said.

---

Casual tone.

Forced.

---

---

Meera didn't respond.

---

---

Her expression remained the same.

---

Calm.

Unreadable.

---

---

"I've seen you," he continued.

---

Ayaan stepped forward.

---

One step.

---

---

The man didn't notice.

---

---

"You should talk more," the man added.

---

"People might think you're—"

---

---

"Move."

---

---

The word cut through the air.

---

Low.

Controlled.

---

---

The man froze.

---

Turned.

---

---

Ayaan stood there.

---

Expression neutral.

Eyes sharp.

---

---

For a second—

No one moved.

---

---

Then the man laughed lightly.

---

"Relax, I was just—"

---

---

"Move."

---

---

Same tone.

---

No change.

---

---

But this time—

There was something under it.

---

---

Not anger.

---

Not aggression.

---

---

Certainty.

---

---

The man hesitated.

---

Looked between them.

---

Something in Ayaan's gaze—

---

Shifted his expression.

---

---

Uncertainty.

---

---

He stepped aside.

---

---

"Whatever," he muttered.

---

And walked away.

---

---

Silence returned.

---

---

Ayaan didn't follow him.

---

Didn't look back.

---

---

His attention remained—

---

On Meera.

---

---

She hadn't moved.

---

Not even slightly.

---

---

"You waited," she said softly.

---

---

Ayaan didn't respond.

---

---

"You let him come closer," she continued.

---

---

Ayaan's gaze didn't change.

---

---

"I was observing," he said.

---

---

A pause.

---

---

Then—

---

Meera smiled.

---

---

That same quiet, knowing expression.

---

---

"You're lying."

---

---

Ayaan's eyes narrowed slightly.

---

---

"You don't like it," she said.

---

---

Not a question.

---

---

A statement.

---

---

Silence.

---

---

Then—

---

Ayaan stepped closer.

---

---

Closer than before.

---

---

"You noticed that too," he said.

---

---

Meera didn't step back.

---

---

Of course she didn't.

---

---

Her voice dropped slightly.

---

Almost a whisper.

---

---

"He's not the only one watching."

---

---

Ayaan's gaze sharpened instantly.

---

---

"What do you mean?"

---

---

Meera tilted her head slightly.

---

---

"I mean," she said softly,

---

"he's just the one you finally saw."

---

---

---

Something shifted.

---

---

Not between them.

---

---

Beyond them.

---

---

And for the first time—

---

The pattern extended past two people.

---

---

Which meant—

---

This wasn't contained anymore.

---

---

And that—

---

Changed everything.
