Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: The Things You Notice

The next few days passed quietly.

Not in the usual way.

Not in the comfortable, familiar rhythm Seo-yoon had grown used to.

This quiet felt heavier.

Like something was being left unsaid.

She noticed it first in small things.

Ji-hoon still waited for her in the morning, standing at the same corner, arriving earlier than he needed to. They still walked to school together, their steps falling into place like they always did. Nothing about that had changed.

But something else had.

He didn't tease her as much.

Didn't point out when she was distracted in class.

Didn't slide his notebook toward her unless she asked.

It wasn't obvious.

Anyone else probably wouldn't have noticed.

But Seo-yoon did.

She always noticed.

That was the problem.

That morning, as they walked, she glanced at him briefly.

"You didn't bring banana milk today," she said.

Ji-hoon looked ahead. "I forgot."

"You never forget."

"I did today."

Seo-yoon frowned slightly, but didn't push it further.

They continued walking.

The silence between them stretched a little longer than usual.

At school, Min-chae was waiting again.

She looked between them once, then narrowed her eyes.

"Something's off."

Seo-yoon sighed. "Nothing's off."

Min-chae ignored her. "Did you fight?"

"No."

"Then why does it feel like you did?"

Ji-hoon walked past her without stopping. "It doesn't."

Min-chae turned to Seo-yoon. "It does."

Seo-yoon hesitated.

She wanted to say Min-chae was wrong.

But she wasn't sure anymore.

"I don't know," Seo-yoon admitted quietly.

Min-chae studied her face for a moment, then nodded slowly. "Exactly."

Classes started soon after.

Seo-yoon tried to focus.

She really did.

But her attention kept drifting.

Not toward the whispers this time.

Not toward anyone else.

Just toward him.

Ji-hoon sat beside her, like always.

But he felt further away.

At some point, the teacher began explaining something new, writing quickly across the board. Seo-yoon looked down at her notebook, trying to follow along, but the information blurred together.

She stopped writing.

For a second, she just stared at the page.

Then, slowly, she turned her head.

Ji-hoon was already looking at her.

Not directly.

But close enough.

Like he had noticed she wasn't paying attention again.

For a brief moment, neither of them said anything.

Then he looked away first.

And didn't move his notebook toward her.

Seo-yoon blinked.

That had never happened before.

She looked back down at her notebook, her chest tightening slightly.

It was such a small thing.

But it didn't feel small.

It felt like something had shifted just enough to be noticed.

At lunch, things didn't get better.

Min-chae was talking about something, her voice energetic as always, but Seo-yoon barely heard her.

Ji-hoon sat across from her this time.

Not beside her.

She didn't know when that had changed.

She picked at her food, her appetite fading without her understanding why.

"You're not eating," Min-chae said suddenly.

Seo-yoon looked up. "I am."

"You're not."

"I'm just not that hungry."

Min-chae leaned forward slightly. "You're thinking."

"I always think."

"Not like this."

Seo-yoon didn't respond.

Across from her, Ji-hoon remained quiet, his focus on his own food.

He didn't push anything toward her.

Didn't say anything about her not eating.

Didn't notice.

Or maybe he did.

And chose not to.

Seo-yoon looked down again.

That bothered her more than she expected.

After school, she packed her bag slowly.

She didn't leave early this time.

She waited.

Ji-hoon stood up a few seconds after her.

"You're not busy today?" he asked.

"No."

He nodded once. "Okay."

That was it.

No follow-up.

No "let's go."

No assumption.

Seo-yoon hesitated.

Then, "Are you?"

"No."

Another pause.

Then they walked out together.

The air outside was warmer than before, the sky clear and bright, but it didn't feel like it.

Not to her.

They walked side by side, just like always.

But the space between them felt more noticeable now.

More defined.

As if something invisible had been placed there.

Seo-yoon tightened her grip on her bag.

"Ji-hoon," she said.

He glanced at her. "What?"

She hesitated.

There was something she wanted to ask.

Something simple.

Something she should have been able to say without thinking.

Why are you different?

But the words didn't come out.

Instead, she shook her head slightly. "Nothing."

Ji-hoon looked at her for a second longer.

Then he nodded. "Okay."

They kept walking.

A few minutes passed in silence.

Then suddenly

"Seo-yoon."

She looked up.

Someone was calling her name.

A voice she didn't recognize well.

She turned.

Lee Hyun-woo was standing a few steps behind them, catching up quickly.

"Hey," he said, slightly out of breath. "I was looking for you."

Seo-yoon blinked. "Me?"

"Yeah. About the project."

Right.

The project.

She had almost forgotten.

"Oh," she said. "What about it?"

Hyun-woo smiled. "I was thinking we could work on it together after school tomorrow. If you're free."

Seo-yoon hesitated.

It was a simple question.

A normal suggestion.

But for some reason, she didn't answer immediately.

She became aware of Ji-hoon beside her.

Quiet.

Still.

Waiting.

"I…" she started.

"You don't have to decide now," Hyun-woo added quickly. "Just let me know."

Seo-yoon nodded. "Okay."

Hyun-woo smiled again. "I'll text you."

He waved lightly before walking ahead, leaving them behind.

Silence returned.

But it wasn't the same silence as before.

Seo-yoon looked forward, her thoughts tangled.

Beside her, Ji-hoon didn't say anything.

Didn't ask.

Didn't react.

He just kept walking.

And for the first time

She wished he would.
