By the time the week reached its middle, the change was no longer subtle.
It wasn't something Seo-yoon had to search for anymore.
It was there.
In everything.
Mornings didn't begin at the corner.
Not always.
Sometimes she arrived first.
Sometimes Ji-hoon did.
Sometimes they walked together.
Sometimes they didn't.
And when they did, the silence between them felt different.
Less familiar.
More careful.
That morning, Seo-yoon reached the school gates alone.
She told herself it didn't matter.
It was just timing.
Nothing more.
Inside, the hallways were already crowded, voices overlapping, footsteps echoing against the floor. She moved through it quietly, slipping into the classroom without drawing attention.
Hyun-woo was already there.
He looked up when she entered.
"You're on time today," he said.
Seo-yoon placed her bag down. "I usually am."
He smiled. "You weren't yesterday."
"I was early yesterday."
"That's different."
She sat down. "Not really."
Hyun-woo laughed softly. "You're hard to argue with."
Seo-yoon didn't respond, but her expression softened slightly.
A few minutes later, Min-chae entered, her eyes immediately scanning the room.
She noticed.
Of course she did.
She walked straight toward Seo-yoon's desk, then stopped, looking between her and Hyun-woo.
"Oh," she said slowly. "So this is happening now."
Seo-yoon frowned. "What is?"
Min-chae didn't answer right away.
Instead, she glanced behind them.
Seo-yoon followed her gaze.
Ji-hoon had just walked in.
He didn't look at them.
Not directly.
He went to his seat without hesitation.
The same one from yesterday.
Not beside her.
Min-chae crossed her arms. "Yeah. Definitely happening."
"It's not," Seo-yoon said.
Min-chae leaned closer. "You're sitting with him."
"For class."
"You're talking to him."
"He's my partner."
"You're choosing him."
Seo-yoon paused.
"I'm not choosing anyone."
Min-chae raised an eyebrow. "Then why does it look like you are?"
Seo-yoon didn't answer.
She didn't have one.
The bell rang, cutting the conversation short.
Class began, but the atmosphere felt heavier than usual.
Seo-yoon kept her focus forward, her pen moving steadily across her notebook, but her thoughts weren't steady at all.
They kept shifting.
Between what Min-chae had said.
Between what had changed.
Between what she was starting to notice.
At some point, Hyun-woo leaned closer again.
"You missed this part," he said quietly, pointing at her notes.
Seo-yoon nodded. "Thanks."
He smiled. "You're welcome."
Behind her, a chair shifted slightly.
Just enough for her to notice.
She didn't turn around.
But she was aware.
Of everything.
Of how close Hyun-woo was.
Of how different it felt.
Of how it wasn't the same.
When class ended, Hyun-woo stood up first.
"Lunch?" he asked.
Seo-yoon hesitated.
She had always had lunch with Ji-hoon.
Always.
It wasn't something they planned.
It just happened.
Every day.
She glanced slightly to the side.
Ji-hoon was packing his bag.
Not looking at her.
Not waiting.
Seo-yoon looked back at Hyun-woo.
"…Okay," she said.
They walked out together.
The cafeteria was louder than usual, or maybe it just felt that way. Seo-yoon followed Hyun-woo to a table, sitting across from him instead of beside someone.
It felt different.
Not wrong.
Just unfamiliar.
Hyun-woo talked easily, telling her about something that had happened in class earlier, his tone relaxed, his expressions animated.
Seo-yoon listened, nodding occasionally.
She even smiled once.
But her attention wasn't fully there.
It kept drifting.
To the side.
To the entrance.
And then she saw him.
Ji-hoon.
He walked into the cafeteria with Min-chae, their conversation quiet but present. He didn't look around much, just moved toward another table.
Not theirs.
Not hers.
Seo-yoon's fingers tightened slightly around her fork.
Hyun-woo noticed.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Nothing," she said quickly.
But she didn't look away.
Not until Ji-hoon sat down.
Not until he started talking to Min-chae.
Not until it became clear
He wasn't going to look at her.
Seo-yoon looked down at her food.
Her appetite faded again.
"You don't eat much, do you?" Hyun-woo said.
"I do."
"Not really."
"I'm just not that hungry."
He studied her for a moment, then nodded. "Alright."
He didn't push.
He didn't question further.
It was easier that way.
After lunch, things continued the same.
Classes.
Notes.
Conversations that felt normal on the surface.
But underneath
Everything felt slightly off.
At the end of the day, Seo-yoon packed her bag slowly.
She didn't expect anything.
Not anymore.
Hyun-woo walked up beside her. "Heading out?"
"Yes."
"Want me to walk with you?"
Seo-yoon hesitated.
Just for a second.
Then she nodded. "Okay."
They walked out together.
Side by side.
Talking lightly.
It should have felt easy.
And in some ways, it did.
But it wasn't the same kind of easy.
Not the kind she didn't have to think about.
As they reached the school gates, Seo-yoon felt it again.
That quiet awareness.
She glanced back.
Ji-hoon was there.
A few steps behind.
Not close enough to join them.
Not far enough to disappear.
Just there.
For a moment, their eyes met.
Then he looked away.
And kept walking.
Not toward her.
Not with her.
Just forward.
Seo-yoon turned back.
Her chest felt tight.
Because this time
It wasn't just a small shift anymore.
It wasn't something she could ignore.
It wasn't just them.
Not anymore.
