The message came that night.
Seo-yoon was sitting on her bed, her notebook open in front of her, though she hadn't written anything in the past ten minutes. Her pen rested between her fingers, unmoving, her thoughts drifting in circles she couldn't quite organize.
Her phone buzzed.
She glanced at the screen.
Hyun-woo:
Are you free tomorrow after school?
Seo-yoon stared at the message longer than she needed to.
It was simple.
Straightforward.
She had expected it.
Still, her fingers hesitated above the screen.
Before she could reply, another message appeared.
Hyun-woo:
We can just work on the project. Nothing complicated.
She exhaled quietly.
That made it easier.
Or at least, it should have.
Her thumb moved slowly.
Okay.
She hit send before she could think about it too much.
The moment the message was delivered, her chest felt… strange.
Not wrong.
Just unfamiliar.
Her phone buzzed again almost immediately.
Hyun-woo:
Great. I'll wait for you tomorrow.
Seo-yoon placed her phone down beside her and leaned back slightly, her gaze drifting to the ceiling.
It was just a project.
That's all it was.
So why did it feel like more?
Her thoughts shifted.
Without meaning to, she reached for her phone again.
Another chat.
A different name.
She stared at it for a moment.
Then she typed.
Are you busy tomorrow?
The reply came quickly.
Ji-hoon:
No.
She read the message once.
Then again.
Her fingers hovered over the screen.
I have to work on a project with Hyun-woo.
She paused before sending it.
Then she did.
The typing bubble appeared almost instantly.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Seo-yoon waited.
Her grip on her phone tightened slightly.
Finally
Ji-hoon:
Okay.
That was all.
No questions.
No reaction.
Just that.
Seo-yoon stared at the word, her expression unreadable.
She didn't reply.
She didn't know what to say.
After a moment, she locked her phone and set it aside again.
But this time, she couldn't go back to her notebook.
Her thoughts refused to settle.
The next day felt different from the start.
Seo-yoon noticed it the moment she reached the corner.
Ji-hoon was there.
Like always.
But something about the way he stood felt… distant.
"You're early again," she said.
"You're late," he replied.
"I'm not."
He didn't argue.
They started walking.
The silence came quicker this time.
He didn't ask about the project.
Didn't mention Hyun-woo.
Didn't say anything at all.
Seo-yoon glanced at him once, then looked away.
She told herself it didn't matter.
But it did.
It stayed with her through the entire morning.
In class, she found it harder to focus than usual.
Her eyes moved between the board and her notebook, but nothing really stayed.
At some point, she realized she had written the same word three times in a row.
She stopped.
Beside her, Ji-hoon continued writing, his expression unchanged.
He didn't notice.
Or maybe he did.
And chose not to say anything.
That thought lingered longer than she expected.
When lunch came, Min-chae sat down with her usual energy, but even she seemed to sense something off.
"You're quiet today," she said.
"I'm always quiet."
"Not like this."
Seo-yoon didn't respond.
Min-chae leaned forward slightly. "Is this about Ji-hoon?"
Seo-yoon looked up immediately. "No."
"That was too fast."
"It's not about him."
Min-chae didn't look convinced, but she didn't push further.
Instead, her gaze shifted slightly.
Seo-yoon followed it.
Hyun-woo was walking toward them.
He stopped beside their table, offering a small smile.
"Hey."
Seo-yoon nodded. "Hi."
"Still okay for today?" he asked.
"Yes."
"Good," he said. "I'll wait after school."
He glanced briefly at Ji-hoon, then back at Seo-yoon. "Don't leave without me."
"I won't."
Hyun-woo smiled again before walking away.
Min-chae watched him go, then slowly turned back.
"Well," she said. "That's new."
Seo-yoon frowned. "It's just a project."
"Sure."
Seo-yoon didn't argue.
She didn't have the energy to.
Across from her, Ji-hoon remained quiet.
He didn't react.
Didn't comment.
Didn't even look up.
And for some reason
That bothered her more than anything else.
After school, Seo-yoon packed her bag carefully, taking longer than usual.
Her movements were slow, deliberate.
Like she was waiting.
For what, she wasn't sure.
Ji-hoon stood up beside her.
"You're going with him?" he asked.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Seo-yoon nodded. "Yes."
He adjusted his bag over his shoulder. "Okay."
That was it.
Again.
Just okay.
Seo-yoon hesitated.
"You don't have to wait today," she said, even though he hadn't offered.
"I know."
Another pause.
Then he walked away.
Just like that.
Seo-yoon stood still for a moment, watching him leave.
Something about it felt wrong.
Too easy.
Too simple.
"Ready?"
She turned.
Hyun-woo was standing by the door, his expression relaxed.
"Yes," she said, forcing her thoughts aside.
They walked out together.
The conversation came easily with him.
He talked more than Ji-hoon did.
Asked questions.
Filled the silence.
Seo-yoon answered, nodded, listened.
It should have felt comfortable.
And in a way, it did.
But not in the same way.
Not like before.
At some point, Hyun-woo said something that made her laugh.
A real laugh.
For a second, she forgot everything else.
Then she noticed something.
Across the street, standing near the corner they always met at
Ji-hoon.
He wasn't supposed to be there.
He had already left.
Seo-yoon's steps slowed.
Hyun-woo noticed. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," she said quickly.
But her eyes lingered.
Ji-hoon wasn't looking at them.
Or maybe he was.
She couldn't tell.
For a moment, everything felt still.
Then Hyun-woo spoke again, pulling her attention back.
Seo-yoon turned away.
And kept walking.
She didn't look back again.
That night, she couldn't stop thinking about it.
The way Ji-hoon had just said okay.
The way he had walked away.
The way he had been there
Even after leaving.
She sat at her desk, her notebook open again.
This time, she wrote.
Not notes.
Not assignments.
Just a single line.
Why did it feel like something almost happened…
She paused.
Then finished it.
…and I let it pass?
Seo-yoon stared at the words for a long time.
Then slowly closed the notebook.
Because she didn't have an answer.
Not yet...
