Chapter 3 - The Things We Pretend Not to Feel

I thought class would feel normal.

It didn't.

The moment I walked in—

Everything shifted.

Not silence.

Worse.

Whispers.

Low.

Controlled.

Like I wasn't supposed to hear.

But I did.

I always do.

I walked to the back.

Same seat.

Same place.

Funny how things stay the same…

Even when everything else is broken.

The teacher started talking.

Literature.

Symbolism.

"People hide meaning behind words…"

I almost laughed.

If she only knew.

My eyes moved across the room.

And then—

Emily.

A few rows ahead.

Perfect posture.

Perfect focus.

Perfect lie.

Because now I could see it.

The tension.

Her fingers tapping.

Her shoulders stiff.

She knew I was there.

And she was avoiding it.

Or maybe…

Avoiding me.

"Lucas."

I blinked.

The teacher.

Right.

Class.

"Yes?"

Eyes turned.

Of course they did.

"Tell us," she said

"What does 'truth hidden beneath silence' mean?"

Of course.

That question.

I leaned back slightly.

Thought for a second.

Then—

"People don't hide the truth because they want to," I said.

The room got quieter.

"They hide it because they're afraid of what happens when it comes out."

Silence.

Real silence.

Even Emily stopped moving.

The teacher nodded slowly.

"Interesting."

Yeah.

You have no idea.

The bell rang.

Chairs moved.

Voices came back.

Normal again.

Fake normal.

I grabbed my bag—

And felt it.

A hand.

Tight around my wrist.

I turned.

Emily.

"Can we talk?" she said.

Low.

Careful.

Like this wasn't supposed to happen.

I hesitated.

Then nodded.

We walked out.

Past people watching.

Always watching.

She didn't stop until we reached the staircase.

Empty.

Hidden.

Of course.

She let go of my wrist.

But didn't step back.

"You shouldn't have come back," she said.

Again.

Same words.

Different weight.

"Everyone keeps saying that," I replied.

"But no one explains why."

"You already know."

"Then say it."

She looked away.

Frustrated.

"I can't."

"Or you won't?"

That hit.

I saw it.

Right there.

"Lucas…" she whispered.

And for a moment—

She wasn't perfect anymore.

She was tired.

Broken.

"You don't understand what things are like now," she said.

"Then help me understand."

She shook her head.

"It's not that simple."

"Nothing ever is."

Silence.

Closer now.

More personal.

"Ryan…" she started.

Then stopped.

I stepped closer.

"What about him?"

Her eyes met mine.

Fear.

Real fear.

"You need to stay away from him," she said.

I almost smiled.

"Why? Because he asked nicely?"

"I'm serious."

"So am I."

I lowered my voice.

"What is he hiding?"

She froze.

Small reaction.

But enough.

"Nothing," she said.

Too fast.

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not—"

"You are."

The words came out sharp.

Her eyes widened.

Hurt.

Good.

Now we were even.

"You left," she said suddenly.

That hit.

Hard.

"What?"

"You left," she repeated.

"You don't get to come back and act like nothing happened."

Silence.

Because that…

That was true.

"I didn't leave for nothing," I said.

"Then why did you?" she asked.

I hesitated.

Because I could answer.

But not fully.

Not yet.

"Because I had to."

She laughed.

Empty.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

Silence.

Tension.

Unresolved.

"Things are different now," she said again.

"They don't have to be."

"They do."

"Why?"

She looked at me.

Deep.

Honest.

"Because we're not those people anymore."

Maybe she was right.

Or maybe…

She just didn't want to be.

Footsteps.

We both turned.

Ryan.

Of course.

He stopped when he saw us.

His eyes locked on mine instantly.

Sharp.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"Am I interrupting something?" he asked.

Emily stepped away.

Fast.

Automatic.

"No."

Too fast.

Ryan smiled.

But not really.

"Good."

He walked closer.

Slow.

Like he had all the time in the world.

"You really don't learn, do you?" he said.

"About what?"

"Staying away from things that don't belong to you."

I exhaled.

"Funny," I said

"I was thinking the same about you."

His smile disappeared.

Silence hit hard.

"Careful, Lucas," he said quietly.

"You don't know what you're getting into."

I stepped closer.

"No," I replied

"But I'm going to."

That did it.

Something changed in his eyes.

Just for a second.

Then—

It was gone.

"Stay out of it," he said.

"Or what?"

Silence.

Heavy.

And then—

"You'll regret it."

There it was.

Not a threat.

A promise.

He turned.

"Let's go."

Emily hesitated.

Just a second.

Then followed him.

And just like that—

She was gone.

Again.

I stood there.

Alone.

But not really.

Because now I knew something.

This wasn't just about the past.

They weren't just hiding what happened.

They were protecting something.

Something happening now.

And whatever it was—

It scared them.

🖤 Poem — Emily

I chose the silence

the safer side

built my walls

learned to hide

but safety fades

when truth gets near

and love becomes…

your deepest fear
