The small bell above the shop's door jingled as Ahn Soo Bin entered, her steps light and energetic. The familiar scent of fried chicken and brewing soju welcomed her—comforting and warm. Her mother was already behind the counter, arranging freshly fried chicken on trays, while the radio played soft morning songs in the background.
"Soo Bin, good morning! You're on time today," her mother said, smiling warmly.
"Of course! Wouldn't want to disappoint our loyal customers," Soo Bin replied, grinning as she rolled up her sleeves.
Her older brother, Hyun Woo, lounged against the counter, casually scrolling on his phone. He glanced up and smirked. "Finally decided to help out? Or just here to show off your police intern skills?"
Soo Bin laughed loudly. "I'm here to help! Don't start teasing me, lazy brother!"
The playful banter was familiar and comforting. It was the rhythm of home—energetic, noisy, and filled with warmth.
As she moved through the shop, taking orders and chatting with customers, the door jingled again. Soo Bin turned and saw a familiar face—Lee Go Eun, 24, her childhood friend, smiling brightly as she stepped inside.
"Eun! You came!" Soo Bin exclaimed, running over and giving her a quick hug.
Go Eun laughed softly. "Of course! I wanted to see you, and also… I finally have a break from the hospital."
"Hospital, huh?" Soo Bin teased, handing her friend a chair. "Still acting all serious and calm while I do all the talking?"
Go Eun rolled her eyes, but her smile betrayed her amusement. "Some things don't change, do they? You, always loud and energetic. Me, always quietly observing."
Soo Bin grinned. "Exactly! You know me too well. Remember when we tried to set up that lemonade stand as kids? You did all the planning, I did all the shouting!"
Go Eun laughed, shaking her head. "And we made barely anything, but we were so proud. I think that's when I realized teamwork works best when one of us handles the details and the other handles… the people."
Their conversation flowed naturally, filled with laughter, teasing, and shared memories. Soo Bin's mother peeked over from the counter, smiling at the two girls.
"You two really are inseparable, even now," she said softly.
"Of course! She's my best friend," Soo Bin replied, her voice full of warmth.
"Some things never change," Go Eun added quietly. "It's nice… seeing that the energy we had as kids still exists today."
After chatting for a while, Soo Bin helped her mother with orders, Go Eun pitching in at times to assist with drinks. The rhythm of the shop was lively, the chatter, the smells, the warmth of family and friends—everything felt familiar and grounding.
Hyun Woo wandered over occasionally, pretending to be busy but enjoying the lively interaction between the two friends. Soo Bin laughed and teased him gently, dragging him into small tasks.
As the afternoon wore on, Soo Bin, Go Eun, and her mother shared a simple lunch in the back of the shop. They talked about school, internships, small victories, and the struggles of life, their conversation peppered with jokes and laughter. Go Eun even teased Soo Bin about always being dramatic when taking orders.
"Dramatic?" Soo Bin protested, laughing so hard she nearly dropped her drink.
"Absolutely," Go Eun said, smiling mischievously. "You put your whole heart into every word. It's… impressive, really."
Soo Bin rolled her eyes but smiled, feeling the warmth of her family and her childhood friend around her. These were the people who made life colorful, who grounded her, and reminded her that even amidst the chaos of her internship and studies, there was always home, laughter, and friendship waiting.
By the end of the day, Go Eun hugged Soo Bin tightly before leaving.
"Don't forget to visit me at the hospital soon," she said.
"You better not skip!" Soo Bin replied, waving. "And don't forget, next time, you're helping me with everything!"
Go Eun laughed softly as she disappeared out the door. Soo Bin turned back to her family, her chest warm with happiness. Life was loud, messy, and energetic—and she wouldn't have it any other way.
