Chapter 35 - CHAPTER 35: Families, Memories, and Bonds

The soft hum of the city outside the window did little to distract Kim So Hee as she stepped into her family's penthouse. The familiar scent of polished wood, fresh flowers, and a faint hint of her mother's perfume greeted her like an old friend.

"Ah, So Hee!" her mother called warmly from the kitchen, a tray of tea in hand. Professor Kim, always poised yet caring, looked up from arranging the cups. "You're back earlier than usual today."

So Hee smiled, a natural, relaxed warmth spreading across her face—a side of her rarely seen at the station. "Finished early. Thought I'd come see you both before heading to dinner with friends later."

Her father, Commissioner Kim, emerged from his study, papers in hand. His presence was commanding, yet his eyes softened when they met So Hee's. "You've been working hard, I see," he said, voice low but filled with pride. "Everything okay at the station?"

So Hee laughed lightly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Yes, everything's fine. I'm… learning a lot."

Her parents exchanged a knowing glance. They had always been proud of their daughter, doting on her and giving her the best education and guidance possible. Yet, they knew little about the intricacies of her heart, especially when it came to feelings they had never considered—like a love between two women. That thought didn't cross So Hee's mind today, though. Today was just about warmth, family, and the comfort of being home.

Meanwhile, across the city in a small, lively neighborhood, Ahn Soo Bin was helping her older brother, Hyun Woo, tidy up the family shop. The smell of fried chicken, spicy tteokbokki, and the sweet aroma of makgeolli filled the air. Their mother, a single parent, moved swiftly behind the counter, greeting customers and managing orders with practiced efficiency.

Soo Bin wiped her hands on her apron, smiling as she watched her mother's familiar movements. "You're incredible, Mom," she said softly. "How do you manage all of this by yourself?"

Her mother glanced at her, eyes warm. "You, Hyun Woo, and the shop keep me going. You all are my reason to work hard."

Hyun Woo chuckled from behind the counter, tossing a wrapped bottle of makgeolli toward Soo Bin. "And I'm just here to keep things interesting."

Soo Bin rolled her eyes, laughing. The shop was small and busy, yet full of life, laughter, and family love. She felt grounded here, connected to her roots, even as she pursued her dreams of becoming a police officer.

That evening, both families found themselves in their respective homes, thinking quietly about their children.

Commissioner Kim and his wife discussed So Hee's dedication. "She's very strong," her mother said. "But… she keeps her heart so private. I wonder… does she have someone special?"

Her father shook his head, chuckling softly. "She's a mystery, our only daughter. I'm just proud she's happy with what she does. The rest… will come in time."

Across town, Soo Bin's mother paused while folding a tablecloth. "Soo Bin has grown so responsible, hasn't she?" she said softly. "I just hope she's happy, that she finds people she can trust and lean on."

Hyun Woo, overhearing her, grinned. "She's got plenty of people she trusts already… and plenty of people who annoy her too," he teased. Soo Bin smirked at him, rolling her eyes, but inside, she felt the warmth of family and the unspoken support that always surrounded her.

Later that evening, So Hee sat by her window, looking out over the city lights, thinking about her parents and the love that had shaped her. She realized how much she wanted to protect those she cared about—not just her family, but the people who had quietly become important in her life, like Soo Bin.

Across the city, Soo Bin cleaned up the shop, glancing at the neon signs outside. She thought of her mother's gentle smile, Hyun Woo's teasing remarks, and how fortunate she was to have such a strong foundation of love. And, of course, she couldn't help but think of So Hee, wondering when she might see her again, and how to express the feelings that had been quietly growing.

Both young women, in their separate worlds, felt a quiet pull toward the bonds that awaited them—not only with each other but also with friends, family, and those who had begun to take meaningful places in their hearts.

By the time So Hee returned to her own apartment that night, she carried with her the warmth of her family's love, a sense of grounding and strength. Soo Bin, closing the shop, felt the same steady reassurance. Both were ready to face the challenges ahead—not just in their professional lives, but in the tangled, delicate paths of their hearts.

The city outside was quiet, yet the world inside them felt full of possibilities, connections, and moments yet to come.
