Chapter 36 - CHAPTER 36: Weekend Outing

The late morning air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of spring blossoms through the streets of Seoul. Kim So Hee, dressed casually in a soft sweater and jeans, stepped out of her apartment with a quiet excitement she rarely allowed herself to feel. She was meeting Soo Bin, Go Eun, and So Ra for a casual weekend lunch—a chance to relax, laugh, and enjoy each other's company away from the responsibilities of the station, the hospital, and the lawyer's office.

Soo Bin was already waiting at the café near the river, sitting on a terrace table with a steaming cup of tea. Her face lit up the moment she spotted So Hee approaching.

"Hey! You're early," Soo Bin called, waving energetically.

So Hee smiled, a soft, teasing curl at the edge of her lips. "You know me. Punctuality is a habit."

Soo Bin rolled her eyes playfully. "A very charming habit," she added, her voice lighter than usual, though her heart gave a small, uneven flutter at the sight of So Hee.

Before So Hee could reply, two familiar figures appeared around the corner—Go Eun and So Ra. Both had been walking together after finishing their respective morning obligations, unaware that their paths would cross with So Hee and Soo Bin here.

"Look who it is," Go Eun whispered to So Ra, her smile brightening. "Small world, huh?"

So Ra grinned, though she kept her composure, a subtle warmth spreading across her chest. "I guess it is. Seems like we're all in the same orbit today."

The four of them gathered around the table, chairs sliding into place with soft scrapes on the wooden terrace. After polite greetings and shared laughter over small pleasantries, they ordered food—simple dishes: bibimbap, dumplings, and freshly squeezed juice. The atmosphere, light and carefree, gave each of them a rare moment to step away from their busy lives.

So Hee found herself stealing glances at Soo Bin across the table. Her heart thumped in a way she couldn't quite explain, a strange warmth rising in her chest. Every laugh, every teasing remark from Soo Bin, felt sharper, more meaningful. She told herself it was just friendship, a connection built over time and shared experiences—but part of her chest tightened when Soo Bin reached for her drink first.

Soo Bin, for her part, was equally aware. Her bright smile faltered for a fraction of a second when So Hee laughed at something Go Eun said, a small pang of jealousy tugging at her. But she brushed it off, letting herself enjoy the casual, easy companionship of the moment.

Meanwhile, Go Eun and So Ra sat side by side, their conversation flowing naturally, teasing and laughing without effort. Though they weren't close yet, there was a subtle chemistry between them, a recognition of shared humor and understanding. Go Eun observed So Ra's sharp mind, the way she could turn any topic into something interesting, and she felt a quiet admiration building. So Ra, on the other hand, noticed Go Eun's warmth, her ability to listen intently, and the gentle kindness she carried in her every gesture.

The conversation occasionally drifted toward So Hee and Soo Bin, observations about their work, and small memories of their first dinner together. Neither Go Eun nor So Ra tried to hide their interest, though they kept it polite and restrained—a subtle tension building without either of them acknowledging it outright.

As lunch progressed, the four of them laughed, teased, and shared stories. So Hee found herself leaning just a fraction closer to Soo Bin when recounting a funny incident at the station. Soo Bin mirrored her posture, and for a brief moment, the world around them seemed to shrink, leaving only the two of them, their laughter mingling over steaming plates of food.

Go Eun and So Ra shared similar subtle moments—the brush of hands when passing utensils, lingering eye contact when one made a witty remark. It was quiet, restrained, yet undeniably there.

By the time dessert arrived—small bowls of shaved ice with sweet syrup and fruit—the sun had dipped lower in the sky, painting the river and streets with soft gold. They lingered, enjoying the calm, the laughter, and the rare chance to just be four friends together without the weight of work pressing down.

"So… we should do this more often," So Ra said quietly, a small, almost shy smile on her lips.

Go Eun nodded, smiling warmly. "Yeah… it's nice. Even if it's just by coincidence, like today."

Soo Bin and So Hee exchanged glances, silent but meaningful. The bond between them had been building for months, but moments like this—quiet, carefree, and full of laughter—strengthened it in ways words couldn't fully capture.

As they stood to leave, walking down the terrace steps toward the street, Go Eun nudged So Ra lightly. "I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did," she said softly, her voice carrying a hint of honesty she rarely revealed.

So Ra's lips curved into a small, warm smile. "Me neither. Maybe coincidences aren't so bad after all."

So Hee and Soo Bin walked side by side, their shoulders occasionally brushing, the faintest warmth lingering with every step. Though they didn't speak of it aloud, the unspoken understanding was there: this was more than friendship. The spark was growing.

And as the four of them disappeared into the busy streets of Seoul, laughter trailing behind, each of them felt the quiet thrill of connection—friendship, subtle chemistry, and the unspoken promise that their bonds would only grow stronger.
