The voice disappeared as quickly as it came.
But the moment it faded from Arin's mind, the world around him no longer felt the same.
The kingdom below had already unsettled him enough with its impossible silence, its ancient walls, and the overwhelming feeling that something inside it had been waiting for centuries. But hearing a voice directly within his thoughts—one he somehow recognized without understanding why—changed everything.
Because now certainty replaced instinct.
Someone inside that kingdom knew exactly who he was.
The evening wind swept coldly across the hilltop while the massive gates below continued opening inward with slow, thunderous force. Even from this distance, the sound echoed faintly through the valley like ancient stone grinding against itself after centuries of remaining closed.
And the strangest part—
the gates did not stop.
They opened completely.
Like an invitation.
Or a warning.
No one in the group spoke immediately.
The atmosphere surrounding them had shifted too suddenly for casual conversation anymore. Even Riven, who normally filled silence with humor no matter how tense things became, looked visibly unsettled now while staring toward the valley below.
Liora slowly stepped closer beside Arin afterward.
"…you heard something."
Not a question.
Arin glanced toward her quietly before nodding once.
The others immediately looked toward him.
"What kind of something?" Selene asked carefully.
He hesitated briefly.
"…a voice."
Silence settled again.
Kael frowned slightly afterward.
"In your memories?"
"No."
Another pause.
"It felt… present."
The answer disturbed everyone immediately.
Aira crossed her arms uneasily while looking back toward the kingdom below.
"You mean someone actually spoke to you?"
Arin nodded slowly.
The fragments of Vijaya pulsed faintly again beneath the cloth wrapped around them.
And somewhere deep inside himself, the strange sense of recognition continued lingering.
Not memory.
Not exactly.
Something older than that.
As though part of him already knew whoever waited inside that kingdom—even if his mind didn't remember yet.
Riven finally exhaled heavily afterward.
"Alright. I officially miss the giant mountain monsters."
"No you don't," Kael answered immediately.
"…okay fair."
Despite the attempt at humor, tension remained tightly wound between the group while they slowly began descending the hill toward the kingdom below.
The road leading into the valley had changed too.
The old stone path they followed for days gradually widened into an enormous black roadway lined with weathered pillars stretching endlessly toward the kingdom gates ahead. Crimson cloth moved softly from each pillar in the evening wind while unfamiliar symbols glowed faintly across the stone beneath fading sunlight.
Everything about the road felt ceremonial somehow.
Not built for ordinary travelers.
Built for arrival.
Liora quietly noticed the symbols first while walking beside Arin.
"…those marks."
Everyone slowed slightly afterward.
Golden lines carved into the black stone pulsed faintly every few steps beneath their feet. The designs resembled ancient script mixed with geometric patterns none of them fully recognized.
Except Arin.
The moment he looked directly at them—
fragments surfaced instantly inside his mind.
Not complete memories.
Only understanding.
"These are protective seals."
The answer escaped before he consciously thought about it.
Everyone immediately looked toward him again.
Darin frowned slightly.
"How do you know that?"
Arin stared toward the glowing symbols beneath the road.
"…I don't know."
But even while saying it, he understood more fragments instinctively.
The seals weren't meant to keep enemies out.
They were meant to keep something inside the kingdom contained.
The realization sent unease through him immediately afterward.
Liora noticed the shift in his expression again.
"What is it?"
Arin remained quiet briefly before answering honestly.
"I don't think this place was built to protect people."
Another pulse moved through Vijaya beside him.
"…I think it was built to guard something."
The group exchanged uneasy glances afterward while the kingdom walls grew larger ahead of them.
Massive didn't feel like a strong enough word anymore.
The closer they approached, the more impossible the structures became. The black stone walls surrounding the valley stretched higher than entire mountains in some places, covered in ancient carvings barely visible beneath crimson banners moving through the wind overhead. Towering gates of dark metal stood open before them now, revealing glimpses of the kingdom streets illuminated beneath thousands of golden lights beyond.
And standing before those gates—
guards waited silently.
Rows of them.
Perfectly still.
Each carried long crimson spears glowing faintly beneath the evening light while dark armor covered their bodies completely from head to toe. Their helmets concealed their faces entirely beneath black metal and narrow golden visors, making them look less human and more like ancient statues brought to life.
Nobody in the group spoke while approaching the gates.
The pressure surrounding the kingdom had become overwhelming now.
Not violent.
Controlled.
Like standing inside territory belonging to something far beyond ordinary kingdoms or nations.
Arin quietly noticed something else too as they approached closer.
The guards were not reacting to the entire group equally.
Their attention remained fixed entirely on him.
Not hostile.
Observant.
Waiting.
The realization unsettled him more than open aggression would have.
Eventually the group stopped several meters before the open gates while silence settled heavily across the entrance. The guards did not move. Did not speak.
Then suddenly—
one stepped forward.
The movement happened so smoothly it almost looked unnatural.
The armored figure lowered its spear slightly afterward before speaking in a calm voice distorted faintly beneath the helmet.
"…the kingdom welcomes the bearer of Vijaya."
Everyone froze instantly.
Riven immediately whispered under his breath,
"Okay that's terrifying."
The guard continued calmly.
"You have been expected."
Arin's eyes narrowed slightly afterward.
"…expected by who."
Silence followed briefly.
Then—
"The one who has waited longest."
The answer explained absolutely nothing.
And somehow that made the atmosphere worse.
Liora stepped slightly closer beside Arin afterward while the guards behind the speaker remained perfectly motionless near the gates.
The lead guard slowly turned afterward before gesturing toward the kingdom beyond.
"You may enter."
Another pause.
"The Regent awaits your arrival."
The moment those words left the guard's mouth, Vijaya reacted violently again.
Golden energy surged beneath the cloth wrapped around the fragments hard enough that several nearby guards instinctively tightened their grip on their spears.
Arin felt the weapon almost pulling toward the kingdom center now. Toward the enormous temple towering above the city beyond the gates.
And along with that pull—
another fragment surfaced inside his mind suddenly.
A throne room.
Crimson banners moving beneath darkness.
Someone standing near enormous windows overlooking the kingdom while speaking softly without turning around.
"You're late."
The memory vanished instantly afterward.
Arin staggered slightly before catching himself.
"Arin!" Liora grabbed his arm immediately.
"I'm fine."
But even while saying it, his heartbeat remained uneven now.
Because the voice from that fragment—
was the same one he heard on the hilltop earlier.
The realization settled heavily inside him while the group slowly entered through the kingdom gates afterward.
The city beyond felt impossibly alive.
Massive streets stretched outward beneath glowing lanterns while thousands of people moved throughout the kingdom beneath evening light. Markets filled the lower districts while bridges crossed rivers flowing directly through the city itself. Towering black buildings lined the roads alongside ancient temples carved directly into the mountains surrounding the valley.
And yet despite how populated the kingdom looked—
the moment Arin entered, people began stopping.
Not everyone at once.
Gradually.
One by one.
Conversations quieted.
Movement slowed.
Eyes turned toward the group passing through the streets.
Toward him specifically.
Liora immediately noticed.
"…they know."
Arin quietly nodded.
Because now he could feel it clearly.
The entire kingdom recognized Vijaya.
Not merely as a weapon.
As something sacred.
Or feared.
The deeper they moved through the city, the stranger the reactions became. Some people lowered their heads respectfully when passing. Others looked visibly unsettled after noticing the fragments beside him. Children stopped speaking entirely while elders watched from the streets with expressions carrying something dangerously close to recognition.
Not of Arin.
Of what he carried.
Riven moved slightly closer toward the group afterward while keeping his voice low.
"I officially hate how mysterious this place is."
"Agreed," Selene answered immediately.
Even Kael looked deeply uneasy now.
Because despite the beauty of the kingdom surrounding them, an unshakable feeling lingered beneath everything:
This city had been waiting for something to return.
And whatever that something was—
Arin had brought it with him.
Eventually the roads began sloping upward toward the enormous temple standing at the center of the kingdom. The closer they approached, the stronger Vijaya's reaction became until golden light visibly pulsed through the cloth wrapped around the fragments every few seconds.
The guards escorting them remained silent the entire time.
And far above them now, standing somewhere beyond the towering temple walls hidden beneath crimson banners and ancient stone—
someone waited.
Someone who already knew his name long before they ever met.
