📖 DIMENSION X —
CHAPTER 6: "SOMETHING WATCHING"
The treehouse had never felt this full before.
Not physically.
But emotionally.
Like every corner held a different thought, a different fear, a different decision waiting to be made.
Maya sat cross-legged on her bed, pulling Evie closer beside her like it was the most natural thing in the world.
"Okay," she said, clapping softly, "orientation time."
Evie blinked. "Ori…en…ta…tion?"
"It means I explain everything so you don't accidentally break society," Maya said proudly.
Layla rolled her eyes, but there was a small smile hiding there.
Maya pointed dramatically around the room.
"This… is our group."
Evie looked around slowly.
At Ryan.
At Zayn.
At Arjun.
At Layla.
Then back at Maya.
Maya leaned in, lowering her voice like it was a secret.
"Ryan—leader energy. Thinks he's responsible for everything. Acts tough. Actually soft."
Ryan scoffed. "I am not soft."
"You literally gave her your blanket yesterday," Maya shot back.
"…it was cold."
"SOFT."
Evie smiled a little.
Maya turned her head slightly.
"Zayn—anger issues."
"I do NOT have anger issues," Zayn snapped instantly.
Maya didn't even look at him.
"See?"
Evie let out the tiniest laugh.
"Arjun," Maya continued, "smart. Like annoyingly smart. Thinks he's always right."
"I am always right," Arjun said calmly.
Maya pointed at him. "Exactly."
Layla crossed her arms. "What about me?"
Maya paused.
Looked at her.
Then smiled softly.
"…my best friend."
Layla didn't say anything.
But she didn't look away either.
Evie watched that.
Carefully.
"…and me?" she asked quietly.
Maya turned back to her.
Her expression changed.
Softer.
Warmer.
"You," she said gently, "are officially one of us now."
Evie froze slightly.
"One… of you?"
Maya nodded.
"We have rules though," she added quickly. "Very important rules."
Evie straightened.
"Rules?"
Maya counted on her fingers.
"Rule one: no leaving alone."
"Rule two: no using powers in public."
"Rule three: we protect each other. Always."
Evie listened like it mattered more than anything.
"And rule four," Maya smiled, "we don't let anyone feel alone."
Something in Evie's eyes shifted.
Just slightly.
Then—
"NO."
The word cut through everything.
Sharp.
Cold.
Everyone turned.
Zayn stood near the door, jaw tight.
Eyes serious.
"No?" Maya frowned.
"She's not staying," Zayn said.
Silence.
Ryan straightened.
"Zayn—"
"No," Zayn repeated. "This isn't a game. This isn't a sleepover anymore."
Maya stood up.
"Why are you acting like this?"
"Because someone has to be realistic," he snapped.
Layla stepped forward. "She needs us."
"And what if we can't protect her?" Zayn shot back. "What if whatever is after her comes here? What then?"
Evie lowered her head.
Ryan noticed.
Immediately.
"She's not alone anymore," Ryan said quietly.
Zayn laughed bitterly.
"That's exactly the problem."
Before anyone could respond—
He turned.
And left.
The silence that followed felt heavier than any argument.
Evie whispered, "…I can go."
"No," Maya said instantly.
"You're not going anywhere," Layla added.
Ryan didn't say anything.
But his eyes followed the direction Zayn left.
Then—
He picked up his plate.
And walked out.
The night air was cooler.
Quieter.
Ryan climbed up to the treehouse slowly.
Zayn was already there.
Sitting near the edge.
Looking out into the dark.
Ryan didn't speak at first.
He just sat down beside him.
A minute passed.
Maybe more.
"…you're scared," Ryan said finally.
Zayn scoffed.
"I'm not scared."
"You are."
Silence.
"…you didn't see her," Zayn muttered.
Ryan frowned.
"What?"
"In the forest," Zayn said. "The way she looked. The way everything burned. That wasn't normal, Ryan."
"I know."
"No, you don't," Zayn snapped. "Because you keep acting like this is fine."
Ryan's voice stayed calm.
"I'm acting like she needs help."
"And I'm acting like we might get hurt," Zayn shot back.
They stared at each other.
Both right.
Both wrong.
"…we don't leave people behind," Ryan said quietly.
Zayn looked away.
"…that's going to get us killed someday."
Ryan didn't respond.
Because maybe—
He knew that too.
Back inside—
Evie sat quietly on Maya's bed.
Layla handed her a blanket.
"You don't have to listen to him," Maya said gently.
Evie shook her head.
"…he's not wrong."
That surprised them.
"I am dangerous," she added softly.
Maya sat beside her.
"Maybe."
Evie looked up.
"But so is the world," Maya continued. "Doesn't mean you don't belong in it."
Evie blinked slowly.
"…I don't know how to belong."
Layla sat on her other side.
"You learn."
Maya smiled.
"And we're really good teachers."
Evie looked between them.
For the first time—
She didn't look like she was about to run.
Later that night—
Everyone settled in.
The treehouse lights dimmed.
Voices softened.
Breathing slowed.
Evie lay beside Maya.
Staring at the ceiling.
"…Maya?"
"Hmm?"
"…why are you helping me?"
Maya didn't answer immediately.
Then she turned slightly.
"Because you looked like you needed someone."
Evie's fingers tightened around the blanket.
"…no one helped before."
Maya's voice softened.
"Then we'll be your first."
Evie closed her eyes.
Not fully trusting.
But not afraid either.
Somewhere in the night—
Time shifted strangely.
One moment—
The room was quiet.
Peaceful.
The next—
Ryan was awake.
He didn't know why.
Something felt… off.
The air.
The silence.
Too quiet.
He sat up slowly.
Looked around.
Everyone was asleep.
Even Zayn.
Ryan exhaled.
Rubbing his eyes.
"…I'm overthinking," he muttered.
He stood up.
Walked toward the small desk near the window.
Something had fallen earlier.
A book.
He reached down to pick it up.
And then—
He froze.
Outside the window—
Something moved.
Not fast.
Not loud.
Just…
there.
Ryan slowly lifted his head.
And saw it.
A shape.
Tall.
Wrong.
Standing just beyond the trees.
Watching.
Its form barely visible in the darkness.
But its eyes—
Faintly glowing.
Ryan's breath caught.
His heart started pounding.
"…no way…"
The figure didn't move.
Didn't blink.
Just watched him.
Ryan took a step back.
And then—
It was gone.
Just like that.
Nothing there.
Only darkness.
Ryan stood frozen.
"…I saw that," he whispered.
Behind him—
A voice.
"You saw what?"
Ryan turned.
Zayn stood there.
Half awake.
Annoyed.
"There was something outside," Ryan said quickly. "I swear—"
Zayn sighed.
"Ryan…"
"I'm serious."
"You're tired," Zayn said. "You're letting her story get to your head."
Ryan shook his head.
"No. This was real."
Zayn walked to the window.
Looked out.
Nothing.
"See?" he said. "Nothing there."
Ryan stepped closer.
Looked again.
Empty.
His chest tightened.
"…it was right there."
Zayn crossed his arms.
"Or maybe you're starting to believe her nonsense."
Ryan didn't respond.
Because deep down—
He knew what he saw.
And it wasn't nothing.
Morning came too quickly.
Like the night had been cut short.
Sunlight filled the treehouse.
Warm.
Normal.
Too normal.
Evie sat near the window.
Watching the light.
"…it's different," she whispered.
Maya stretched beside her.
"What is?"
"…morning," Evie said.
Maya smiled.
"Yeah. That's kind of the point."
Evie looked at her.
"…I like it."
Maya grinned.
"Good. You're staying for more."
Across the room—
Ryan stood quietly.
Watching the forest.
The exact spot where he saw it.
Nothing was there.
But something inside him—
Didn't believe that.
Not anymore.
And somewhere far beyond the trees—
Something was still watching.
Waiting.
For the right moment.
