Chapter 7 - EP 7 : SIGNALS THEY PRETEND NOT TO SEE

📖 DIMENSION X

Episode 7: "Signals They Pretend Not to See"

Morning didn't arrive loudly.

It slipped in quietly… like something watching.

Sunlight filtered through the wooden cracks of the treehouse, landing softly across Evie's face. For a second, she looked peaceful. Normal. Like she belonged here.

Then her fingers twitched.

A faint flicker of blue light danced across her fingertips—gone in a blink.

Maya, half-awake, groaned.

"Okay if you explode before breakfast I'm going back to sleep."

Evie blinked, confused. "Explode?"

"Yeah. You glow, things burn, wind happens. It's a whole thing with you."

Evie smiled a little.

That smile? Rare. Small. But real.

Across the room, Ryan was already awake—just staring.

Not in a creepy way. More like… trying to understand something he couldn't explain.

Layla noticed. Of course she did.

"Oh my god," she whispered dramatically, nudging Zayn, "he's doing the stare again."

"I am NOT staring," Ryan snapped immediately.

"You are. It's weird."

"It's not weird."

"It's a little weird."

"It's not—"

"Children," Maya interrupted, sitting up, "if we don't eat, we die. Priorities."

Downstairs smelled like toast and chaos.

Ryan's mom, Elena, was moving around the kitchen, multitasking like a queen under pressure. Plates clinked. The radio played softly.

Then—

glitch.

Static. A sharp distortion.

Elena paused.

Just for a second.

Then it went back to normal.

She didn't say anything.

But her eyes? Not calm anymore.

Outside, the day felt too normal.

Too perfect.

Which was exactly why it wasn't.

The group sprawled across the backyard—Arjun trying to fix a broken toy drone, Zayn arguing with Layla about something completely unnecessary, Maya laying flat on the grass like she had no responsibilities in life.

Evie sat quietly at first.

Watching.

Learning.

Then she reached for a small flower.

Her fingers hovered over it.

The petals shimmered—just slightly.

"Hey," Maya said softly, sitting up, "you don't always have to use your powers, you know."

Evie froze.

"…I know."

But her voice didn't sound convinced.

Inside the house, Elena wiped her hands and checked the clock.

3:33 PM.

She frowned.

"That's weird…"

She could've sworn it was just 2-something.

Before she could think more—

the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then steady.

Elena exhaled slowly.

"Just electricity…"

She said it like she was trying to convince herself.

Evening arrived with noise.

Bags. Voices. Plans.

Maya burst into the house like a storm.

"GUESS WHAT—sleepover. Approved. Non-negotiable."

"It was already happening," Arjun said.

"Yeah but now it's OFFICIAL."

"That changes nothing."

"It changes EVERYTHING."

Zayn rolled his eyes. "You're exhausting."

"Thank you 💅"

Later, as the sun dipped, the moms gathered.

The living room turned warm—tea cups, soft laughter, the comfort of old friendships.

Elena. Nadia. Sophia.

Three women who had lived different lives… but shared something unspoken.

"Kids are upstairs?" Sophia asked.

"Somewhere," Elena replied.

"That's concerning," Nadia muttered.

They laughed.

Then—

the lights flickered again.

This time longer.

The tea in Nadia's cup trembled slightly.

Elena noticed.

Nadia noticed.

Their eyes met.

For a second—

Something passed between them.

Recognition.

Fear.

Memory.

Then just as quickly—

they looked away.

No one said a word.

Upstairs, chaos.

Maya had taken over the room like a dictator.

"Okay RULES," she announced.

"No rules," Zayn said immediately.

"RULES," she repeated louder.

Evie sat quietly on the bed, watching them like they were… fascinating.

Like this—this messy, loud, ridiculous group—was something she'd never had.

Ryan leaned against the wall, arms crossed.

"You okay?" he asked her quietly.

Evie nodded.

"…It's loud."

Ryan smiled a little. "Yeah. That's us."

Night fell slower.

Darker.

Heavier.

The treehouse felt different now.

Not unsafe.

Just… aware.

Wind moved through the leaves in uneven patterns.

Ryan leaned near the window, searching for something he couldn't name.

The forest beyond the house stood still.

Too still.

He squinted.

For a second—

something moved.

Tall.

Wrong.

Gone.

Ryan froze.

"…Did you see that?"

Zayn didn't even look up. "See what."

"Something was there."

"There's always something there. It's called trees."

"No, I'm serious."

Zayn sighed. "You're starting to sound like her."

Ryan's jaw tightened.

"I'm not imagining things."

"Then prove it."

Silence.

Ryan didn't answer.

Because deep down—

he wasn't sure.

Back inside, Evie sat near the edge of the bed.

Her hands clenched.

Her eyes flickered—

white.

red.

blue.

green.

Then normal.

Maya noticed.

"Hey… you okay?"

Evie nodded quickly.

"…It's fine."

But it wasn't.

She could feel it.

Something was closer.

Downstairs, the tea party was ending.

Chairs moved. Cups clinked.

Sophia stretched. "We should do this more often."

Nadia hummed. "Maybe during daylight next time."

Elena didn't respond.

She was staring at the clock again.

3:33.

Again.

Her grip tightened slightly.

That wasn't possible.

Outside—

deep in the forest—

something breathed.

Slow.

Heavy.

Searching.

Up in the treehouse, laughter returned.

Maya was telling a ridiculous story. Layla was arguing mid-story. Arjun was correcting details nobody cared about.

For a moment—

everything felt normal again.

Ryan looked at Evie.

Evie looked back.

No words.

Just understanding.

And somewhere between that chaos—

something real began.

But far away—

in a place no one had entered in years—

a hidden room remained untouched.

Dust-covered.

Silent.

Waiting.

A single notebook lay on the table.

Its pages filled with symbols.

Equations.

Warnings.

And one name written again and again—

ASTERIA

And beneath it—

one line circled in red:

"X PROTOCOL IS NOT A THEORY."
