Episode 12: "The Thing That Remembers You"
"RUN!"
Ryan didn't wait this time. The second the forest went silent after Voss disappeared, something in his gut snapped hard.
They ran.
Branches clawed at their arms, leaves crushed under their feet, breaths uneven, panic real—not imagined, not theory, not notes on a whiteboard.
Real.
"Why are we running?!" Maya yelled, tripping slightly.
"Because he said we'd see it again!" Zayn snapped. "And I'd like to NOT!"
Arjun clutched his notebook like it was oxygen. "Wait—wait—we need to observe—"
"OBSERVE LATER, LIVE NOW!" Layla dragged him forward.
Evie stopped.
Just for a second.
Her head tilted.
Eyes flickering—white, then black.
"…it's not behind us."
Ryan turned sharply. "Then where—"
A low sound cut him off.
Not loud.
Not distant.
Right beside them.
The air shifted.
Cold.
Heavy.
Wrong.
Maya froze. "Nope. Nope. I reject this reality."
The ground beneath them… rippled.
Like water.
Arjun's voice dropped to a whisper. "It's not following us."
Zayn swallowed. "…we're inside it."
The trees bent slightly—not moving, but watching.
Evie stepped back slowly.
"…don't move fast."
"EXCUSE ME?" Maya hissed. "Now is the perfect time to move fast!"
"It reacts," Evie said. "To panic. To attention."
Layla forced herself still, grabbing Maya's arm. "Breathe. Just—breathe."
Ryan clenched his jaw. "Everyone stay close."
A shadow slipped between them.
Not forming fully.
Not attacking.
Just… testing.
Arjun whispered, "It's learning."
Zayn snapped, "Great. Love that for us."
Another movement.
Closer.
Ryan's voice sharpened. "Evie."
She nodded.
Her hand lifted slowly.
No fire.
No ice.
Just stillness.
The shadow hesitated.
Paused.
"…it knows me," Evie whispered.
Maya blinked. "That is NOT comforting."
The air hummed again.
Louder.
Then—
everything snapped.
The forest returned.
Normal.
Too normal.
They stood frozen.
No shadows.
No presence.
Nothing.
"…what just happened?" Layla breathed.
Arjun looked around, frantic. "We triggered a phase overlap—then it ended—"
Zayn shook his head. "English."
"…it let us go."
Silence.
Ryan exhaled slowly. "…we leave. Now."
No one argued.
They didn't stop until the trees thinned and the broken fence appeared again.
Maya bent over, gasping. "I officially hate nature."
Layla nodded. "Same."
Zayn looked back once. "…it didn't follow."
Evie stayed quiet.
Because she knew—
it didn't need to.
At the road, the bus stop felt unreal.
Normal people.
Normal sounds.
Cars passing.
Like the forest didn't exist five minutes away.
Maya leaned against the pole. "So… what's the plan? Cry? Panic? Eat snacks?"
Arjun flipped his notebook open. "We have data now."
Ryan crossed his arms. "We have danger."
"Both," Arjun corrected.
Layla looked at Evie. "…are you okay?"
Evie nodded.
But her eyes said otherwise.
"…it's getting stronger," she whispered.
Ryan heard it.
Didn't react.
But he heard it.
Back at the house—
the moms were not calm.
Not even close.
Elena paced the room, file still open on the table.
Nadia stood near the window, arms crossed tight.
"This matches too much," Elena said. "The patterns, the timing—"
"And now Voss is here," Nadia added. "That's not coincidence."
Elena stopped. "…we need to find him."
"And say what?" Nadia snapped. "Hey, remember your crazy theories? Turns out they're real?"
Elena's voice lowered. "If he knows something—"
"He always knew something," Nadia cut in.
Silence.
Then—
the door opened.
The kids walked in.
Trying to look normal.
Failing.
Hard.
Elena turned instantly. "Where were you?"
Ryan didn't hesitate. "Out."
Maya whispered, "Very descriptive."
Nadia's eyes narrowed. "Out where?"
Zayn stepped in, voice steady. "Just around."
Layla added quickly, "Bus ride. Nothing big."
Arjun nodded. "Observation trip."
Everyone looked at him.
"…bad wording," he muttered.
Elena's gaze shifted to Evie.
"…you okay?"
Evie froze slightly.
"…yes."
Short.
Simple.
Careful.
Maya jumped in. "She's fine. We're all fine. Totally fine. Extremely fine."
Nadia sighed. "That's not convincing."
Ryan stepped forward. "We're just tired."
Elena studied him.
Long.
Quiet.
Then nodded.
"…go upstairs."
They didn't wait.
Treehouse.
Safe zone.
Except it wasn't anymore.
Ryan shut the door behind them.
"…we need to talk."
Maya dropped onto the floor. "We ALWAYS need to talk."
Arjun already had the whiteboard out.
"Update," he said. "Entity behavior: adaptive, reactive, possibly aware."
Zayn sat down hard. "…it played with us."
Layla nodded slowly. "It didn't attack."
Evie looked down.
"…it was deciding."
Silence.
Ryan ran a hand through his hair. "And Voss—"
"He knows everything," Arjun said.
"And told us nothing," Maya added.
"Which means," Zayn said, "we go back."
Layla stared at him. "You're joking."
Zayn shook his head. "…I'm not staying blind."
Ryan looked at him.
Then nodded.
"…tomorrow."
Maya blinked. "OH we're doing a sequel already??"
Arjun wrote quickly.
"Next step: find Voss."
Layla frowned. "And how exactly?"
Evie spoke quietly.
"…he'll find us."
They all looked at her.
"…he was looking at me," she added.
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"…then we stay ready."
Night came again.
Too fast.
Too quiet.
They lay in the same positions.
Girls on one side.
Boys on the other.
Evie in the middle.
But no one slept easily.
Maya whispered, "If I die, I'm haunting all of you."
Layla whispered back, "Not helpful."
Zayn muttered, "Sleep."
Ryan stared at the ceiling.
Listening.
Waiting.
A soft sound.
Barely there.
Ryan sat up slowly.
"…did you hear that?"
No one answered.
But they were awake.
All of them.
Evie's eyes were open.
Already watching the window.
"…it's here."
The glass didn't shatter this time.
It didn't need to.
The shadow slipped through the edges.
Like smoke.
Like it owned the space.
Maya whispered, "No no no—again??"
Zayn grabbed the metal rod.
"Not running this time."
The shadow grew.
Taller.
Closer.
Ryan stepped forward.
"…what do you want?"
The air dropped.
Cold.
Heavy.
The shadow tilted.
Like it was… listening.
Evie stepped beside Ryan.
"…it doesn't want."
Her voice trembled.
"…it remembers."
The shadow moved closer.
Not attacking.
Not rushing.
Just… reaching.
Toward her.
Ryan stepped in front of her instantly. "Back off."
The shadow paused.
Then—
split.
Two forms.
Then three.
Surrounding them.
Arjun whispered, "It's multiplying—"
Maya: "THAT WAS NOT IN THE PLAN—"
Layla grabbed Evie's hand.
Zayn stepped forward.
"Come on then."
The shadows moved—
all at once.
And then—
a sharp frequency cut through the air.
High.
Piercing.
The shadows froze.
Ryan turned.
At the edge of the treehouse—
Dr. Voss stood.
Device glowing.
Eyes locked.
"…I told you," he said calmly.
"…you'd meet it again."
The shadows twitched violently.
Struggling.
Breaking.
But not gone.
Voss looked at Evie.
"…and now it knows exactly where you are."
Silence dropped.
Heavy.
Final.
Because this time—
it wasn't just following.
It had chosen.
