Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 — The Price of Protection

Elena didn't like silence anymore.

Not this kind.

The kind that followed after someone rewrote your life in a single sentence.

You're under my protection.

It echoed in her head like a threat disguised as safety.

She stood by the window now, arms crossed, staring at a city that suddenly felt unfamiliar.

"How long?" she asked.

Adrian, behind her, didn't answer immediately.

"How long what?"

"How long do I stay here?"

A pause.

Then—

"That depends on you."

Of course it did.

Elena turned, eyes sharp. "That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

A flicker of irritation crossed her face.

Good.

Adrian noticed.

Even better.

"You're not afraid enough," he said calmly.

Elena let out a quiet breath. "And you want me to be?"

"I want you to understand your situation."

"I do."

"No," Adrian said, stepping closer, "you don't."

His presence closed the distance again.

Not rushed.

Not forced.

But inevitable.

"If they find you," he continued, "you disappear."

"I got that part."

"And if I decide you're a liability…"

He didn't finish.

He didn't need to.

Elena held his gaze.

"Then why keep me?"

There it was.

The real question.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Logic.

Adrian studied her for a moment.

Then—

"Because you interest me."

Honest.

Simple.

Dangerous.

Elena blinked.

Once.

That wasn't the answer she expected.

"…That's a terrible reason to keep someone alive."

Adrian's lips curved slightly.

"I disagree."

Silence stretched between them again.

But this time—

It wasn't empty.

It was charged.

Unspoken tension.

Unfinished thoughts.

A soft buzz broke the moment.

Adrian's phone.

He glanced at it.

Annoyance flickered.

"Stay here."

"Like I have a choice," Elena muttered.

He ignored that.

And left.

The door clicked shut.

Elena exhaled sharply the second she was alone.

Her body finally reacted.

Her hands trembled—just slightly.

"Okay…" she whispered.

"Think."

Running?

Impossible.

Fighting?

Pointless.

So what was left?

Understanding.

If she couldn't escape the game—

She had to learn the rules.

Her eyes scanned the room.

Minimalist.

Clean.

Too clean.

No personal items.

No clues.

Just control.

Everything about him screamed it.

Then—

Her gaze landed on the table.

A file.

Half-open.

Careless.

Or intentional.

Elena hesitated.

This could be a test.

Or a trap.

Or both.

She stepped closer anyway.

Back in the hallway—

Adrian stood with his phone pressed to his ear.

"They're moving faster than expected," a voice said.

"I know."

"They've already eliminated two possible leaks."

Adrian's expression hardened slightly.

"And they're narrowing it down."

Silence.

"They'll reach her."

Adrian's eyes flicked briefly toward the closed door behind him.

"No," he said calmly.

"They won't."

"You're taking a risk."

A pause.

Then—

"I decide what's worth the risk."

Inside the room—

Elena opened the file.

Carefully.

Her eyes moved quickly across the page.

Names.

Transactions.

Connections.

It was bigger than she thought.

Way bigger.

This wasn't just mafia.

This was—

Her breath caught.

Government links.

International transfers.

Hidden alliances.

This was power on a different level.

"Shit…"

Then—

A shadow moved.

Elena froze.

Slowly—

She looked up.

Adrian stood at the door.

Watching.

Silent.

Unreadable.

How long had he been there?

Her heart skipped.

But she didn't step back.

Didn't close the file.

Didn't pretend.

"…You left this on purpose," she said.

Not a question.

A statement.

Adrian didn't deny it.

"I wanted to see what you'd do."

Elena swallowed.

"And now you know."

"Yes."

A step closer.

"And you still opened it."

Another step.

"No hesitation."

Elena lifted her chin slightly.

"I needed answers."

"And now you have more questions."

He stopped in front of her.

Close.

Again.

Too close.

"That's how this works."

Elena closed the file slowly.

Her fingers steady now.

Her fear?

Still there.

But controlled.

"…So what now?"

Adrian looked at her.

Really looked.

Measuring.

Deciding.

Then—

"Now…"

A brief pause.

The slightest shift in his expression.

"…you start being useful."

Elena frowned. "Useful how?"

Adrian's gaze darkened just a fraction.

"You got in once."

A beat.

"Do it again."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"You want me to go back into that system?"

"I want you to finish what you started."

"That's insane."

"Probably."

He didn't care.

Elena stared at him.

At the man who just turned her survival into a job.

"You're asking me to risk my life."

Adrian's voice dropped slightly.

Calm.

Cold.

"I'm giving you a reason to keep it."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Elena let out a slow breath.

This wasn't about choice anymore.

It never was.

She was already in.

Too deep.

"…And if I say no?"

Adrian held her gaze.

Unmoving.

Certain.

"You won't."

Again.

That certainty.

That control.

That infuriating calm.

Elena looked away for a second.

Then back at him.

Her eyes sharper now.

Stronger.

More aware.

"…Fine."

A pause.

Then—

"But if I'm doing this…"

She stepped closer.

Closing the distance this time.

Her voice steady.

"I want answers too."

Adrian watched her.

And for the first time—

There was something new in his eyes.

Not just interest.

Not just curiosity.

But recognition.

"Careful, Elena," he said quietly.

"You're starting to negotiate."

And somehow—

That felt like crossing a line she couldn't uncross.

To be continued...
