Chapter 13 - Chapter 14: The Shape Beneath

The city felt different after Intramuros.

Not louder.

Not quieter.

Just—

closer.

Mateo walked ahead, the Sunstone steady in his hand.

Still.

Unreactive.

Waiting.

"…So that was the first point," Lila said.

Mateo nodded once.

"…Yeah."

She glanced at him. "And we messed up everything after it."

Mateo didn't answer.

Because that part—

was already understood.

"…We fix it," he said instead.

Lila exhaled slowly.

"…That's not reassuring."

They didn't go back to the park.

Not yet.

Because now—

they knew better.

They stayed near Intramuros.

Walking along the outer walls.

Mateo stopped.

Opened his notebook.

He redrew everything.

This time—

starting from the chamber.

First point.

Then the marker.

Then the structure.

Three points.

He connected them.

The lines didn't align.

He adjusted them.

Once.

Then again.

Still wrong.

Mateo frowned.

"…No."

Lila leaned closer. "What?"

He shifted the angles.

Adjusted the spacing.

Then—

"…Wait."

His eyes narrowed.

"…They don't connect like this."

Lila crossed her arms. "Then how?"

Mateo rotated the notebook.

Once.

Then—

he saw it.

"…They bend."

Silence.

Lila leaned in.

Adjusted her angle.

"…That's not just a curve."

Mateo didn't move.

"…No."

A pause.

"…It's part of something larger."

He flipped back to the notes from the library.

The sketches.

The fragments.

All arranged—

not as lines—

but as arcs.

"…It's not just a shape," Mateo said.

A pause.

"…It's a structure."

Lila's voice lowered.

"…A structure of what?"

Mateo didn't answer.

Because now—

he could see it extending.

Beyond the page.

He traced the arc.

Then extended it.

Further.

"…This doesn't stop in Manila," he said.

A pause.

"…This doesn't stop in Luzon."

Silence.

Lila stared at him.

"…You're saying this goes beyond all of this?"

Mateo nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"…We've only seen a fraction of it."

"Mateo."

They froze.

The voice was calm.

Measured.

Familiar.

They turned.

Professor Delgado stood a few steps away.

Watching them.

Not surprised.

Certain.

"…Sir," Mateo said.

The professor's gaze moved to the notebook.

Then to the Sunstone.

Then back.

"…You've been busy," he said.

Lila stepped slightly closer to Mateo.

"…Just reviewing notes, sir."

The professor didn't react.

"…At Rizal Park?" he asked.

Silence.

Mateo didn't answer.

"…And now here."

A pause.

"…You're following something."

Mateo held his ground.

"…We're studying patterns."

The professor's gaze didn't shift.

"…Be careful," he said quietly.

A pause.

"…Some patterns don't reveal themselves."

Another pause.

"…They take."

Silence.

Then—

he turned.

And walked away.

Lila didn't speak immediately.

"…He knows," she said.

Mateo nodded slightly.

"…Or he's close."

If the professor was involved—

this wasn't hidden anymore.

It was being watched—

from both sides.

Mateo looked back at the notebook.

The arcs.

The points.

The missing pieces.

"…This isn't just a structure," he said.

Lila frowned. "Then what is it?"

Mateo's voice lowered.

"…It's a design."

A pause.

"…Something meant to be completed."

Across the street—

unseen—

a man spoke quietly.

"…He's accelerating."

A pause.

"…Then we adjust the pace."

Mateo closed the notebook.

Looked ahead.

Not at Intramuros.

Not at the park.

But beyond both.

"…We don't just follow anymore," he said.

Lila frowned. "Then what do we do?"

Mateo's eyes sharpened.

"…We map it."

A pause.

"…All of it."

He tightened his grip on the Sunstone.

"…This isn't getting bigger," he said quietly.

A breath.

"…We're just starting to see how big it already is."
