Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: When It Responds

By the time they returned, the light had changed.

The sun hung low, casting long shadows across the church walls. The heat of the afternoon had faded, replaced by something quieter—something heavier.

"…We shouldn't be doing this again," Lila said.

Mateo didn't answer.

Because she was right.

"…We skipped class for this."

Mateo glanced at his phone.

Missed notifications.

"…We'll make it up."

Lila let out a small breath.

"…That's not how that works."

But she followed him anyway.

The church stood the same.

Still.

Unchanged.

But it didn't feel the same.

They stepped inside.

Cool air replaced the fading heat. The interior was dimmer now, the light from the windows angled sharply, leaving parts of the church in shadow.

Fewer people.

Almost none.

"…That's different," Lila murmured.

Mateo nodded.

"…Yeah."

He moved toward the same spot.

The misaligned section.

He crouched.

Ran his hand across the surface.

Stone.

But not uniform.

He shifted slightly.

Pressed.

Nothing.

He adjusted again—

Still nothing.

A third time—

"…Wait."

The Sunstone warmed in his hand.

Faint.

But unmistakable.

"…Mateo," Lila said, voice tightening.

"I feel it."

He lowered it carefully.

The warmth increased.

The stone beneath his hand responded—

not opening—

but loosening.

A low sound moved beneath the floor.

Deep.

The edge dipped—

just slightly.

Not an opening.

Just enough space to see—

not enough to enter.

Darkness beneath.

And lines.

Carved.

Barely visible.

"…It's responding," Lila whispered.

Mateo didn't look away.

"…Only partially."

"You're early."

The voice cut through the silence.

They froze.

Mateo turned slowly.

Professor Delgado stood behind them.

Already inside.

Watching.

"…Sir," Mateo said.

A pause.

"…You were already here."

The professor didn't answer immediately.

"…I've been here since this afternoon."

His gaze shifted to the floor.

Then to the Sunstone.

"…You shouldn't have come back so soon," he said.

Lila stepped slightly closer to Mateo.

"…You knew we would."

The professor didn't deny it.

"…Yes."

A pause.

"…Which is why I came first."

Silence.

Mateo's grip tightened.

"…You've seen this before."

"…Enough to know what happens next," the professor replied.

Mateo didn't look away.

"…We didn't force it this time."

The professor's gaze shifted to the slight opening.

"…You already did once."

A pause.

"…The system doesn't forget that."

Silence.

The stone beneath them shifted again—

then stopped.

The warmth from the Sunstone flickered.

Unsteady.

A sound echoed deeper inside the church.

Footsteps.

Not close.

But deliberate.

The professor's expression changed.

"…You weren't followed," he said quietly.

A pause.

"…But you were noticed."

Lila glanced toward the entrance.

"…Who?"

The professor didn't answer.

Because he was already listening.

The lights flickered.

Once.

Then again.

Not like a power failure—

like something beneath them had shifted.

The stone edge settled back.

The gap narrowed.

"…It's closing," Mateo said.

The professor nodded.

"…Because this isn't the right time."

The footsteps grew closer.

Measured.

Not random.

The Exit

"…Now," the professor said.

This time—

Mateo didn't hesitate.

They stepped back.

The floor sealed completely.

As if nothing had happened.

But the lines—

were still there.

Barely visible.

They moved toward the exit.

The shadows stretched longer now.

Near the doorway—

a shape passed across the light.

Not entering.

But waiting.

Lila slowed for a fraction of a second.

"…Someone's there."

"…Keep moving," the professor said quietly.

They stepped outside.

The evening air hit them.

Warmer than inside—

but sharper.

They didn't stop until they turned the corner.

Only then—

did Lila exhale.

"…That wasn't just bad timing."

Mateo shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…That was controlled."

Aftermath

The Sunstone sat still in his hand.

No warmth.

No response.

"…It opened," Lila said.

Mateo nodded.

"…Just enough."

A pause.

"…Then it shut us out."

Lila looked back toward the church.

"…Because of them?"

Mateo's voice lowered.

"…Because we weren't aligned."

Silence.

"…So what now?" she asked.

Mateo didn't answer immediately.

Because now—

this wasn't just about finding the next point.

It was about understanding when—

and how—

they were allowed to reach it.

Final Shift

Mateo closed his hand around the Sunstone.

"…It's not just location," he said.

A pause.

"…It's sequence."

Lila nodded slowly.

"…And timing."

Mateo looked back once.

The church stood still in the fading light.

Unchanged.

But not inactive.

His voice lowered.

"…We weren't early."

A pause.

"…We were out of sequence."

And this time—

that felt more dangerous than getting it wrong.
