Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Foundation Below

The morning came too fast.

Sunlight filtered through the campus trees in uneven patches as students moved between buildings—voices overlapping, footsteps quick, everything settling back into routine.

Mateo barely noticed.

"…We're going to be late," Lila said, adjusting her bag as they crossed the courtyard.

Mateo glanced at his phone.

Then at the time.

"…We already are."

Lila exhaled.

"…That's the third lecture this week."

Mateo nodded once.

"…Yeah."

But he didn't slow down.

Because his focus wasn't on class.

It was on what she said last night.

The structure above didn't match what was underneath.

"…We can't keep skipping," Lila added.

"…This is going to catch up to us."

Mateo nodded again.

"…One more," he said.

Lila gave him a look.

"…That's what you said last time."

He didn't answer.

Because this time—

it felt different.

By the time they reached the edge of campus, the morning crowd had thinned. The sun had risen higher, shadows shorter, the heat settling in.

"…You sure this is even the right place?" Lila asked.

Mateo glanced at her.

"…No."

A pause.

"…But it fits."

Lila shook her head slightly.

"…That's not reassuring."

The church stood ahead of them.

Old.

Weathered.

Not grand.

Not restored.

Still.

"…This is it?" Lila said quietly.

Mateo didn't answer immediately.

Because he was already noticing it.

The alignment.

Something about it—

was off.

Not obvious.

But enough.

"…Yeah," he said.

A pause.

"…I think it is."

They stepped inside.

Cool air replaced the heat.

Dim light filtered through high windows, thin beams cutting across stone and dust.

Fewer people.

Quieter.

The kind of quiet that made small movements noticeable.

A staff member passed nearby, slowing slightly as they lingered too long in one place.

Mateo moved.

Not toward the altar.

To the side.

He crouched.

Ran his hand across the floor.

Stone.

But uneven.

He shifted slightly.

Pressed.

Nothing.

He adjusted again—

slower this time.

Still nothing.

Then—

"…Wait."

Lila stepped closer. "What?"

Mateo tilted his head slightly.

Changed his angle.

"…This section doesn't align."

Lila followed his gaze.

"…Yeah…"

Subtle.

But the difference was there.

"You're not the first to notice that."

They turned.

An older man stood a few steps away.

Not a priest.

Not a visitor.

Watching them carefully.

"…Sorry," Lila said quickly. "We didn't mean—"

The man didn't respond immediately.

He studied them.

Measured.

"…You shouldn't be asking questions about this place," he said.

Silence.

Mateo didn't look away.

"…We're not asking," he said.

A pause.

"…We're noticing."

The man held his gaze a moment longer.

Then—

something shifted.

"…That's worse," he said quietly.

He stepped closer.

"…Most people walk through here and see a floor."

A pause.

"…You saw the difference."

Mateo didn't respond.

"…What's underneath?" he asked instead.

The man didn't answer immediately.

His gaze moved briefly toward the entrance.

Light spilling in.

Movement outside.

Then back to them.

"…Something older," he said.

A pause.

"…Something that wasn't meant to be exposed."

Lila frowned slightly.

"…Then why build over it?"

The man looked at her.

"…To keep it from being used."

Silence.

Mateo's voice lowered.

"…Used how?"

The man hesitated.

Then—

"…It follows something," he said carefully.

A pause.

"…A sequence."

Mateo's expression didn't change.

"…And if you don't follow it?" Lila asked.

The man exhaled slowly.

"…Then it adjusts."

The words settled.

Mateo's grip tightened slightly.

"…Corrects," he said quietly.

The man's eyes flickered.

"…So you've seen it."

A pause.

"…Then you already know what happens next."

Silence stretched between them.

"…There was an entrance," Mateo said.

The man didn't deny it.

"…There was."

A pause.

"…It's sealed now."

"…Because people tried to force it," Mateo said.

The man held his gaze.

"…Yes."

A longer pause.

"…And it didn't end well."

The bell rang faintly outside.

Lila checked her phone.

"…We have a class in twenty minutes."

Mateo didn't move.

"…We can't stay long."

The man stepped back slightly.

"…You shouldn't stay at all."

A pause.

"…If you keep going—"

He stopped.

Then finished quietly:

"…you won't just be finding it."

Silence.

"…You'll be part of it."

Lila didn't look away.

"…We already are."

The man didn't respond.

Because that—

was the problem.

Outside—

across the street—

a man stood still.

"…They found the site."

A pause.

"…Then we don't wait."

Mateo looked back at the floor.

The misalignment.

The hidden layer beneath.

"…This is the next point," he said quietly.

The man didn't confirm it.

But he didn't deny it either.

Lila stepped beside Mateo.

"…We come back," she said.

Mateo nodded.

"…Prepared."

He looked down one last time.

Not at the surface—

But at what was beneath it.

"…No shortcuts."

A pause.

"…Not again."

They turned.

Walking back toward the light.

The morning had fully settled.

Students passed outside.

Voices returned.

Normal.

But something had shifted.

This place hadn't been hidden.

It had always been there—

waiting for someone to follow it the right way.

And now—

they finally had.
