Chapter 34 - Training the Glitches

The Enclave survivors needed more than shelter.

They needed training.

Alex stood before the assembled group in Sanctuary's courtyard—fifty men, women, and teenagers, all of them glitched in different ways. Some had unstable abilities. Others had powers that worked inconsistently. A few had no combat capabilities at all, just broken Systems that marked them for death.

"I know what you've been through," Alex began. "The Purists hunted you. Society rejected you. The System itself tried to delete you." He paused, letting the words sink in. "I've been where you are. My System was broken too. I was a nobody—a warehouse worker who died without accomplishing anything meaningful."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Some had heard rumors about the Sovereign; others were hearing this for the first time.

"But I found a way to turn my glitch into power. Not by fixing it—by evolving it." Alex gestured at the other Sovereigns standing nearby. "Sara, Thomas, Elena, Ghost—they were all glitches once too. Now they're among the most powerful beings in this city."

"What makes you think we can do the same?" a young man called out. His System flickered visibly, numbers and symbols scrolling across his skin. "We're not special. We're just broken."

"Being broken is what makes you special." Alex stepped forward. "The System is designed to be orderly. Predictable. Users follow paths, gain levels, develop abilities according to established patterns. But glitches? Glitches don't follow patterns. We're the variables the System can't control."

He pulled up his own status window, displaying it for everyone to see.

[NAME: ALEX CHEN]

[CLASS: MIDNIGHT SOVEREIGN]

[LEVEL: 28]

[STATUS: EVOLVED]

"My power activates at midnight. For one hour, I'm nearly unstoppable. For the other twenty-three, I'm just me." Alex met their eyes. "That limitation should have been a weakness. Instead, it forced me to be strategic. To value every minute. To work with others instead of alone."

"That's great for you," a woman said. "But my glitch makes my abilities fire randomly. I can't control when or where they activate."

"Then we'll teach you control. Not by suppressing the randomness—by working with it." Alex smiled. "You might not be able to predict when your powers fire, but you can position yourself so that when they do fire, they hit something important."

He looked around the crowd.

"Each of you has a unique challenge. A unique glitch. There's no one-size-fits-all solution. But that's why you're here—we'll figure it out together. The Sovereigns will train you. The settlement will support you. And when you're ready, you'll have the chance to evolve."

"Assuming the Purists don't kill us first," someone muttered.

"The Purists are being dealt with." Alex's voice hardened. "Their Champion is dead. Their weapons are being analyzed. And their backers are going to learn that hunting glitches was the biggest mistake they ever made."

He stepped back.

"Training begins tomorrow. Sara will work with those who have unstable abilities. Thomas will teach stealth and positioning. Elena will help those whose glitches involve System perception. And I'll work with anyone who wants to pursue evolution."

"And if we don't want to fight?" an older woman asked. "If we just want to live in peace?"

"Then we'll help you find peace. Sanctuary isn't just a military base—it's a home. If you want to contribute through crafting, farming, healing, or any other skill, you'll have that opportunity." Alex softened his tone. "No one is forced to fight. But everyone contributes. That's the deal."

The crowd dispersed, conversations bubbling up as the glitched survivors discussed their options. Alex watched them go, wondering how many would succeed—and how many would fall.

"They're scared," Maya said, appearing beside him.

"They should be. The world tried to erase them." Alex turned to face her. "But fear can be a motivator. It can push people to become stronger."

"Or it can break them."

"That's why we're here. To make sure they don't break." Alex touched her arm. "How are the wounded?"

"Recovering. The Enclave had some healers of their own, thankfully. But the psychological damage..." Maya shook her head. "They've been hunted for weeks. Living in terror. That doesn't heal overnight."

"Nothing does. But we'll help them."

"You can't save everyone, Alex."

"I can try." He met her eyes. "I know the odds. I know some of them won't make it. But that doesn't mean I shouldn't try."

Maya smiled sadly.

"That's what makes you a Sovereign. Not the power—the stubborn refusal to give up."

She walked away, leaving Alex alone with his thoughts.

Training would begin tomorrow. The Purists were still out there. The mysterious remnant was working in the shadows.

But for the first time since the Awakening, Alex felt like he had a real plan.

Build. Train. Evolve.

The path forward was clear.
