Chapter 39 - The Coalition

The outreach began the next morning.

Alex sent messages through every available channel—communication crystals, courier runners, even Elena's ability to transmit information through the System itself. The message was simple:

To all survivors with broken Systems:

You are not alone. You are not broken. You are the future.

The Purists are hunting us. A remnant of the old System is providing them weapons. They will not stop until every anomaly is eliminated.

Sanctuary is building a coalition. We are training the glitched. We are preparing to fight back.

If you want to survive, join us. If you want to fight, join us. If you want to become something more than a victim, join us.

We are Sovereigns. We are the evolved. We are the future.

The responses came slowly at first.

A small community in the western district, twelve survivors hiding in a warehouse. They'd been targeted by Purists twice already.

A family in the northern quadrant, their daughter's glitched System making her a target. They'd been running for weeks.

A group of former dungeon divers whose broken abilities had made them outcasts. They had combat experience but nowhere to go.

By the end of the first week, Sanctuary's population had doubled again.

"They're coming from all over," Derek reported. "Word is spreading. Every glitched survivor in the region knows there's a place that will accept them."

"Are we prepared for the influx?"

"Barely. Housing is stretched thin. Food supplies are being rationed. Training facilities are overcrowded." Derek's expression was grim. "But morale is high. These people have been persecuted for months. Having somewhere to belong, someone to fight for—it's giving them hope."

"Hope is a powerful weapon."

"It's also dangerous. If we can't deliver on our promises, that hope will turn to despair."

Alex understood. He was making commitments that he might not be able to keep. If the hostile remnant attacked before they were ready, everyone who'd joined the coalition would suffer.

But the alternative was worse. Letting the glitched remain isolated and vulnerable, picked off one by one by Purist hunters.

"We need more Sovereigns," Alex said. "More evolved anomalies who can train and protect the new arrivals."

"We're already pushing the evolution process as fast as we can. Sara has three candidates ready for the next step. Thomas is working with four more. Elena has identified several whose System connections might allow for unique evolution paths."

"And Kira?"

"She's... different." Derek's tone was cautious. "She spends most of her time in the System architecture, perceiving things we can't. When she does manifest physically, she's distracted. Distant."

"She's carrying a heavy burden. Being a System Avatar means existing in two realities simultaneously."

"I know. But we need her here. In the physical world. Leading, training, preparing." Derek shook his head. "The people need to see all their Sovereigns present and engaged."

"I'll talk to her."

---

Alex found Kira in the courtyard, her body present but her consciousness clearly elsewhere. Her eyes were unfocused, her movements mechanical.

"Kira."

She blinked, refocusing on him.

"Alex. Sorry. I was... elsewhere."

"Where?"

"The System architecture. There are patterns forming—changes in the code that suggest the hostile remnant is preparing something." Her voice was distant. "They're accelerating their timeline."

"What kind of acceleration?"

"More artifacts. More Purist recruitment. They're planning something big—something they think will end the anomaly problem permanently." Kira's eyes finally focused fully. "They're afraid of the coalition. Afraid of what we're building."

"Good. They should be afraid."

"That's the problem. Fear makes them dangerous. They're going to attack soon. Weeks, maybe. Not months."

"Do you know where?"

"Not yet. But I'm looking." Kira's expression was apologetic. "I know I've been distant. The System demands so much attention. There's so much to perceive, so much to understand."

"We need you here too. The coalition needs to see you. Needs to know you're part of this."

Kira nodded slowly.

"You're right. I've been hiding in the architecture because it's easier. Safer. But that's not what Sovereigns do."

"No. It's not."

"I'll be more present. I'll help train the new arrivals, prepare the defenses." Kira straightened. "And I'll keep searching for the remnant's location. When they attack, we'll know where they're coming from."

"Thank you."

Alex left her to her work, feeling slightly reassured. The coalition was growing. The Sovereigns were committed. The enemy was afraid.

But the timeline was shorter than they'd hoped.

And the coming attack would test everything they'd built.
