Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3: No Place to Hide

Liana's heart was still racing from the encounter.

The man who had appeared out of nowhere, claiming to know her, claiming to protect her, now stood close.

She barely recognized him, yet a strange familiarity pulled at her chest.

The shadow across the street didn't move.

It watched.

The feeling of eyes on her made her skin crawl.

"Who are they?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

"They're people from your past," he said quietly.

"People you thought were gone, people you can't ignore anymore."

Her hands clenched into fists.

"My past?" she repeated, disbelief heavy in her tone.

"I've left that life behind. I've built my world. I've left everything."

"Safe doesn't exist anymore," he said, his eyes scanning the street.

"Not for you. Not tonight."

A rustle behind them made her jump.

Her pulse spiked, her chest tight.

He grabbed her hand.

"Move," he whispered.

They pressed against the wall, every nerve screaming.

The street was eerily empty now, but the weight of being watched lingered.

Her breath came fast, shallow, and shaky.

"Why me? Why now?" she asked again.

Her voice barely audible.

"Because you're part of something bigger than you know," he said.

"No one can protect you but me. Not your husband, not anyone else."

Her stomach knotted, panic rising.

"I left him. I left Adrian. I left everything that hurt me. And now you're telling me I can't even have a normal life?"

He shook his head slowly.

"You never had a normal life. Not really. And whatever you think was normal… it's over. Tonight changes everything."

Her chest tightened as fear and anger collided.

"What do you mean? What are you talking about?"

He pressed a finger to her lips.

"Not here. They're watching. One wrong word, one wrong move, and you won't get a second chance."

The wind rattled a nearby dumpster.

Liana's hands trembled as she gripped his arm.

The shadows twisted and shifted with every flicker of the streetlights.

"We need to leave," he said.

His voice left no room for argument.

He took her hand, and they moved into a narrow alley.

The city felt different here.

Darker, colder, silent.

Every step they took echoed, each shadow a potential threat.

"Who are they?" she asked again, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I need to know."

"Later," he said.

"When we're safe, you'll understand everything."

Safe.

The word sounded hollow.

Nothing about tonight felt safe.

A low hum of an engine reached them.

A car rolled slowly down the street, headlights cutting through the darkness.

He froze.

"Hide," he whispered.

They pressed themselves against the wall.

Liana's pulse thundered in her ears.

The silhouette of a figure appeared, stepping into the light.

Tall, confident, dangerous.

"They know where you are," he muttered.

"Exactly where you are."

Her hands shook.

"Who are they? What do they want?"

"Everything you thought was over," he said quietly.

"Everything you thought was safe… it isn't. It starts tonight."

Liana's stomach dropped.

Her legs trembled, but she forced herself to stay still.

She realized how unprepared she truly was.

"We can't fight them here," he continued, eyes scanning every corner.

"They're skilled, ruthless. Nothing you know can stop them. Not alone. Not tonight. We have to move."

She nodded, swallowing hard.

Her throat was dry, her mind racing with terror and confusion.

She followed him as he led her deeper into the maze of alleys.

Every shadow was a potential threat.

Every sound set her nerves on edge.

Her senses screamed that danger could strike at any moment.

A sudden noise—a metallic clink—made her jump.

He caught her before she fell.

"Quiet," he hissed.

"Move with me. Stay close."

Her heart pounded, every step echoing in the silent streets.

Her mind screamed questions she couldn't answer:

Who were these people?

Why her?

Why now?

The alley turned sharply.

They ducked behind a stack of crates.

She pressed against him, feeling the tension in his body.

"They're professionals," he said.

"Nothing we do can slow them down if we're careless. They won't hesitate. You understand?"

She swallowed hard.

"I… I think so."

"Good," he said, glancing at her.

"But that's not enough. You have to trust me completely. If you hesitate… even for a second… you could lose everything."

Her chest tightened.

"I'm trying," she whispered.

He nodded once, sharply, then scanned the alley.

Movement flickered in the corner of her eye.

Another shadow, another figure, closing in silently.

"They're splitting up," he muttered.

"We can't outrun all of them. But if we reach the service tunnel up ahead, we can shake them off for now."

She nodded, clinging to him as they moved silently.

The city night was oppressive, the streetlights throwing jagged shadows that seemed alive.

Suddenly, a figure blocked their path.

Liana's breath caught.

Her mind screamed to run, but her legs froze.

He stepped in front of her, positioning himself like a shield.

"Don't move," he commanded.

His voice was calm, controlled, deadly.

The figure hesitated for a moment.

Then a knife glinted in the dim light.

Her heart thudded.

"Run!" he shouted.

And before she could react, he pushed her toward a narrow passage.

Liana stumbled, catching herself against the wall.

The sound of struggle behind her made her stomach churn.

She didn't look back.

She ran, guided by his hand, down the alley, into the maze of shadows.

Somewhere behind her, a shout echoed.

Metal clanged.

Footsteps chased them.

Her lungs burned.

Her legs ached.

But she didn't stop.

Finally, they reached a hidden service tunnel.

He pulled her inside, slamming the metal door behind them.

They were breathing hard, pressed against the cold wall.

Silence settled, broken only by their ragged breaths.

She looked at him.

Fear, confusion, and something else mixed in her gaze.

"Who are they? What do they want from me?"

He met her eyes, steady, unwavering.

"Everything you thought was safe… it's gone.

And if you want to survive, you'll have to trust me completely.

No more hiding. No more running alone.

This is only the beginning."

Her stomach dropped.

Her chest tightened.

Her mind spun.

The enemies were close.

And now, so was the truth.

She realized with a shiver:

Nothing would ever be the same again.
