Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 9: The Choice That Breaks Everything

Liana stepped forward—

And stopped.

Her breath trembled as her eyes moved between them.

Daniel.

Adrian.

Darkness.

Light.

Truth.

Or something that only looked like it.

Her heart felt like it was being pulled in two.

"If I choose wrong…" she whispered, more to herself than to them.

Daniel's voice came low, steady. "You won't."

Adrian didn't speak.

He just watched her.

Like he already knew what she would do.

That… scared her.

Because for a moment—

She felt like she was walking into something already decided.

No.

She clenched her fists.

No one decides for me.

Her breath steadied slightly.

Then—

She moved.

Not toward the light.

Not toward Adrian.

But back.

Back into the darkness.

To Daniel.

The moment she reached him, his hand closed around hers tightly.

Relief flashed across his face.

Small.

Quick.

But real.

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't react.

And that silence—

Was worse than anger.

"I see," he said quietly.

Liana forced herself to meet his gaze.

"I don't trust you."

The words came out stronger than she expected.

But her heart was still shaking.

Adrian studied her for a long moment.

Then—

He smiled.

Not soft this time.

Not warm.

Something colder.

"Of course you don't," he said. "Not yet."

A chill ran through her.

Not yet.

What did that mean?

Daniel pulled her slightly behind him.

"We're leaving."

Adrian didn't try to stop them.

He didn't even step forward.

"You think this changes anything?" he asked calmly.

Daniel didn't respond.

He just started moving, guiding Liana back into the tunnel.

Away from the light.

Away from him.

But Liana could still feel Adrian's eyes on her.

Like he was letting her go.

Not losing her.

That thought made her chest tighten.

They walked fast at first.

Then faster.

Until the light disappeared behind them completely.

Only darkness remained.

Only the sound of their footsteps.

Only the sound of her heartbeat.

After a while—

She slowed.

"Daniel."

He didn't stop immediately.

"Daniel," she repeated.

This time, he turned.

"What?"

Her voice came softer now.

Unsteady.

"Tell me I didn't just make a mistake."

His expression shifted.

Less guarded.

More… human.

"You didn't," he said.

But she saw it.

That tiny hesitation.

That flicker.

And it scared her.

"You hesitated," she said.

"I didn't."

"You did."

Silence stretched.

Then he exhaled.

"I hesitated because this isn't simple," he admitted. "Not because you chose wrong."

That didn't fully comfort her.

But it was honest.

And right now—

She needed honesty more than comfort.

Her voice dropped. "He said I chose you before."

Daniel didn't look away.

"You did."

Her heart tightened.

"Why?"

A long pause.

Then—

"Because you believed I would never lie to you."

The words hit deep.

"Would you?" she asked quietly.

His answer came immediately.

"No."

Something inside her eased slightly.

Not fully.

But enough.

They kept moving.

The tunnel began to open up ahead, leading into a wider space. The air felt different here.

Less suffocating.

But not safe.

Nothing felt safe anymore.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

"A place they can't reach easily."

"They?" she asked again.

Daniel glanced back briefly.

Then said—

"The ones who started all of this."

Her chest tightened.

Before she could ask more—

A sudden sharp pain hit her head again.

Stronger this time.

She gasped, stumbling.

"Liana!"

Daniel caught her as she nearly fell.

"It's happening again," she whispered, gripping his shirt tightly.

Her vision blurred—

Then—

A memory broke through.

Clearer this time.

Not just flashes.

A moment.

She was standing in a room.

Bright screens everywhere.

Numbers.

Codes.

Voices shouting.

"She's breaking through the system!"

Another voice—

"Shut it down now!"

Her own voice—

"You can't stop this!"

Her breath hitched in the present.

"I was… I was doing something," she said.

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

"What did you see?"

"I don't know exactly," she said, shaking. "But I wasn't running. I was fighting something."

His grip on her tightened slightly.

"That's it," he murmured.

Her heart pounded.

"What is?"

"That's who you were."

Fear and disbelief clashed inside her.

"No… I don't even understand what that means."

"You will," he said.

Another fragment hit—

Adrian.

Standing across from her.

Not calm.

Not gentle.

Angry.

"You're going to destroy everything."

Her voice—

"Then maybe it deserves to be destroyed."

Liana gasped sharply as the memory snapped away.

Her breathing became uneven.

"He knew," she whispered.

Daniel stilled. "What?"

"He knew me before," she said. "Not like… not like now. It was different. We weren't—"

She stopped.

The realization hit hard.

"We weren't close," she finished.

Silence.

Heavy.

Daniel didn't deny it.

"Yeah," he said quietly.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"So everything after that… everything I thought we had…"

"Was built," he said.

The truth hurt.

Even when she had expected it.

Tears burned her eyes, but she blinked them back.

"No," she said. "Then I made the right choice."

Daniel looked at her.

She steadied her voice.

"I don't want a life that was built for me," she said. "I want the one I had."

Something in his expression shifted.

Respect.

Maybe even relief.

"Then we get it back," he said.

Before she could respond—

A sound echoed behind them.

Not footsteps.

Not this time.

Something heavier.

Mechanical.

Daniel turned sharply.

His expression darkened instantly.

"They're not done."

Liana's stomach dropped. "What now?"

The ground beneath them vibrated slightly.

A deep metallic rumble followed.

Then—

From the darkness behind them—

Figures emerged.

Not men.

Not human.

Cold.

Precise.

Eyes glowing faintly.

Her breath caught.

"What are those?"

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Something we really didn't want to see tonight."

Fear shot through her.

"They don't look like they're here to talk."

"They're not."

The machines moved forward.

Slow.

Unstoppable.

Liana's heart raced.

"Can we outrun them?"

"No."

Her pulse spiked. "Then what do we do?"

Daniel looked at her.

Really looked at her.

Then said something that made her chest tighten again—

"You remember who you are."

Her breath caught.

"What?"

"You said you were fighting something," he said. "Now might be a good time to figure out how."

The machines stepped closer.

Closer.

No escape behind.

No safety ahead.

Only one option.

Liana swallowed hard.

Fear filled her—

But something else rose with it.

Something unfamiliar.

Something buried.

Her fingers curled slightly.

Her breath slowed.

And for the first time—

She didn't feel like running.

She felt like facing it.

Her voice came out quiet.

But steady.

"Then don't get in my way."

Daniel didn't move.

Didn't argue.

Just stepped aside slightly.

Trusting her.

The machines lunged forward—

And Liana lifted her hand—

As something inside her finally began to wake up.
