Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: The Truth They Buried

The light was blinding.

Liana's eyes struggled to adjust, her body frozen between instinct and fear. The tunnel behind her felt suffocating, but the brightness ahead…

It pulled at her.

Like it was calling her home.

"Don't move," Daniel said, his voice low and sharp beside her.

But she couldn't look away.

Because he was standing there.

Adrian.

Calm. Untouched. Like none of this chaos had ever reached him.

Like he had been waiting.

His gaze rested on her, steady and knowing, and that same faint smile curved his lips.

"Liana," he said softly.

Her name sounded different when he said it.

Familiar.

Dangerous.

Her heart clenched.

"Come here."

The words weren't loud.

They weren't forceful.

And yet—

Her body almost obeyed.

She took a step forward.

Daniel's hand tightened around hers instantly, pulling her back.

"No."

The single word snapped something inside her.

She blinked, her breath uneven, and realized what she had just done.

"I… I didn't mean to," she whispered.

"I know," Daniel said. "That's how he works."

Adrian's smile didn't fade.

If anything, it deepened.

"You've always been responsive," he said calmly. "Even before."

Liana's chest tightened.

Before.

That word again.

"What did you do to me?" she demanded, her voice trembling but stronger now.

Adrian tilted his head slightly, studying her like she was something delicate.

"Do you really want the answer to that?"

"Yes."

"No, you don't," Daniel cut in. "He's trying to break you."

Adrian's gaze flicked to Daniel, amusement flashing briefly in his eyes.

"You're still the same," he said. "Always interfering."

Daniel stepped forward, placing himself fully between them.

"Stay away from her."

A quiet chuckle escaped Adrian.

"I don't need to go near her," he said. "She belongs with me."

The words hit Liana like a slap.

"I don't belong to anyone," she snapped.

Adrian's eyes returned to her.

Soft again.

Patient.

"You say that now," he said. "Because you don't remember what you chose."

Her breath caught.

"Chose what?"

He didn't answer directly.

Instead, he took a slow step forward into the light, making his features clearer.

Perfect.

Controlled.

Terrifyingly calm.

"You weren't taken, Liana," he said. "You were saved."

Her head shook immediately. "That's not true."

"Isn't it?" he asked gently. "Then why can't you remember anything before me?"

The question hit too close.

She faltered.

Daniel spoke quickly. "Because they erased it."

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"They?" he repeated. "You still believe that?"

"Don't twist this," Daniel said, his voice colder now.

"I'm not twisting anything," Adrian replied. "I'm correcting what you've misunderstood."

Liana's chest tightened again.

Corrected.

The same word.

Her gaze moved between them.

Two truths.

Two versions.

And she didn't know which one would destroy her more.

"Tell me," she said, her voice quieter now. "Both of you. No more half answers."

Neither man spoke immediately.

Then Adrian did.

"You were dying."

The words cut through everything.

Liana froze.

"What?"

Daniel's grip on her hand tightened slightly.

"That's a lie," he said.

Adrian ignored him.

"You were running," he continued, his voice calm, steady. "Alone. Bleeding. Broken."

The images hit her again—

Rain.

Cold pavement.

Her breath struggling.

She staggered slightly.

Daniel caught her. "Don't listen—"

"I remember…" she whispered.

Both men went still.

Her voice trembled. "I remember the rain."

Adrian's gaze softened.

"Of course you do," he said.

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Liana, listen to me. He's planting those images."

"No," she said, shaking her head weakly. "They feel real."

Because they did.

Too real.

Her chest tightened painfully as more fragments pushed forward.

A hand reaching for her.

A voice—

"Stay with me."

Her breath hitched.

She looked at Adrian.

"…that was you," she whispered.

He didn't deny it.

"I found you," he said. "And I saved you."

Daniel stepped forward sharply. "You took her."

"I gave her a life," Adrian corrected calmly.

"A controlled one."

"A stable one."

The tension between them thickened.

Liana felt like she was standing in the middle of something far bigger than her.

"What happened to me?" she asked, her voice breaking. "Before all of this… who was I?"

This time—

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"You were a threat."

Silence.

The word hung in the air.

Heavy.

Impossible.

"No…" she whispered.

"Yes," he said. "To people far more dangerous than you can imagine."

Daniel shook his head. "Don't—"

"You were being hunted," Adrian continued. "Not by me."

Her heart pounded violently now.

"Then by who?"

Adrian's gaze flickered briefly.

Then returned to her.

"By the same people he's running from now."

Her eyes moved to Daniel.

His silence said too much.

"Daniel…" she whispered. "Is that true?"

He didn't answer.

And that silence—

Broke something inside her.

"You said they erased me," she said. "But what if—what if he's right?"

"He's not," Daniel said immediately. "He's manipulating you."

"I'm telling her the truth," Adrian replied calmly.

"You don't even know what that is."

Adrian's smile faded slightly.

"Be careful," he said quietly. "You're not in a position to challenge me."

The air shifted.

Dangerous.

Real.

Liana's breathing became uneven again.

"I don't care about your fight," she said. "I just want to know who I am."

Silence followed.

Then—

Adrian spoke again.

"You were someone who couldn't be controlled," he said. "Someone who disrupted things. Broke systems. Made powerful people nervous."

Her heart pounded.

"That doesn't sound like me."

"That's because you've been living as someone else," he said gently.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Then why would you help me?"

The question lingered.

Even Daniel looked at Adrian now.

Waiting.

For once—

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

When he did, his voice was quieter.

"Because I needed you."

The words landed heavily.

Not comfort.

Not kindness.

Something else.

Something colder.

Liana felt it instantly.

"You didn't save me," she whispered.

He didn't deny it this time.

"You gave me a life that suited you."

Silence.

Then—

A faint smile returned to his lips.

"Now you're starting to understand."

Her chest tightened painfully.

Anger mixed with fear.

"So everything… everything was a lie?"

"No," he said softly. "Not everything."

Her heart betrayed her again at those words.

"Then what was real?" she asked.

He looked straight at her.

"The way I feel about you."

The air stilled.

Daniel let out a quiet, bitter laugh. "That's your excuse?"

"It's the truth."

"You don't get to talk about truth," Daniel snapped.

Adrian's gaze shifted to him again.

"You're still alive because of her," he said quietly. "Don't forget that."

Liana's head snapped toward Daniel.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Again.

Too many silences.

Too many secrets.

"I'm done with this," she said, her voice shaking but firm. "No more hiding things from me."

Neither of them moved.

"Daniel," she said. "What is he talking about?"

His jaw tightened.

Then finally—

"You chose me once," he said quietly.

Her breath caught.

"What?"

"You trusted me," he continued. "Before everything was taken from you."

Her heart pounded harder.

"And now?" she asked.

He met her eyes.

"I'm asking you to do it again."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Real.

Behind her—

The tunnel.

Dark. Unknown. Dangerous.

In front of her—

Adrian.

Light. Control. Truth… or lies.

Her chest rose and fell slowly.

This was it.

The first real choice.

Her voice came out barely above a whisper.

"If I go with him… will I remember everything?"

Adrian answered immediately.

"Yes."

Her heart trembled.

"And if I go with you?" she asked Daniel.

His voice was steady.

"You'll remember the truth. Not what he wants you to see."

That didn't make it easier.

It made it worse.

Because now—

She knew.

There was no safe option.

Only consequences.

Liana closed her eyes for a brief second.

Then opened them.

And stepped forward—
